Help solve cold case death on I-5 MCSO Cold Case Squad investigating death of woman found in 2004 Published: 8/11/2010 11:31:38 AM Courtesy of MCSO This drawing of the victim, representing how she may have looked before her death, was based on a forensic anthropoligist's examination of her remains. The Cold Case Squad of the Marion County Sheriff's Office is asking for help in identifying a deceased woman found six years ago on Interstate 5, between Woodburn and Gervais. On Jan. 12, 2004, a farmer found the body of a woman in her late teens or twenties along a fence on Interstate 5, near milepost 268. Investigators believe she died between September and November of 2003. “Our cold case detectives feel that identifying the victim in this case is very possible, as there are a number of distinct physical characteristics that could assist us,” an MCSO press release said. Information from a citizen, even seemingly insignificant facts, could help crack the case. The woman is thought to have been Hispanic, approximately 4-foot-10 to five-foot-three and 120 to 140 pounds, with a stocky build. She had straight black hair, about 18 inches long, worn in a ponytail. She was dressed in relatively expensive, fashionable clothing and had received quality dental work, likely performed outside the United States. The woman had a healing fracture of her upper left leg (femur), which had been surgically repaired with a temporary titanium rod. Detectives tracked the manufacturer of the rod to Mexico City and learned it was made in 1999 in a 10-unit lot, which the manufacturer sold to medical supply companies and public and private Mexican hospitals. Because of the recent surgery, it is likely the woman had been in the United States for a short period of time prior to her death, detectives said. She may have traveled throughout northern Oregon and the state of Washington. The Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted in attempts to identify the woman through the orthopedic rod, but yielded no results as records were not kept on who had the rods installed. The FBI laboratory in Quantico, Va. performed a facial reconstruction from the woman’s skull and a drawing of the victim, based on forensic analysis, was distributed the information through media outlets in Mexico. The Cold Case Squad hopes a friend or family member will recognize the woman’s description, picture or surgical procedure and help in her identification, the release said. To share information on the identity of the woman or the circumstances surrounding her death, call the MCSO Cold Case Squad at 503-540-8006. Information may be given anonymously. The Cold Case Squad was formed in 2004 to investigate unsolved homicide cases that occurred within Marion County. The four investigators assigned to the squad have more than 120 years of combined law enforcement experience at the local, state and federal levels. Cold case homicides are investigated through a lengthy process of reviewing old case reports and following up on new leads developed by investigators. Often, information from citizens -- even things thought insignificant -- is the final key. Attached Image ![]() |
