Guard joins search for man, 82, near Staples
Between 50 to 100 Guardsmen will help look this weekend for Peter Achermann, who was last seen July 24. By VINCE TUSS, Star Tribune Last update: August 7, 2009 - 10:56 PM Peter Achermann The Minnesota National Guard today will join the search for an 82-year-old central Minnesota man last seen July 24. Cass County Sheriff Randy Fisher requested the help in the search for Peter Achermann. On Friday, Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed an executive order directing the Guard to use its personnel and equipment. Among the reasons listed in the order is that "Cass County has exhausted all local resources for providing search and recovery assistance." Fisher said he had discussed with Achermann's family the possibility of asking for the Guard's help. He said it's the first time he has requested the use of the Guard. "We're very appreciative of the request and hope that the additional personnel will help turn up something," Fisher said. Between 50 and 100 Guardsmen from the 1-194th Armored Battalion will aid the search through Sunday, said Maj. Patricia Baker of the Minnesota Guard. The only search using the Guard in a similar way that Baker could recall was in 2007, when a plane with a University of North Dakota flight instructor and student went down in a swampy area near Little Falls, Minn., and a Guard helicopter pulled the plane out of the water. The search has been focused on Achermann's 1995 Chevrolet station wagon, which was found July 25 stuck in a muddy dead-end country road in a rural area northeast of Staples, Minn. Achermann, who lives near Staples, was headed to a family wedding July 25 but never showed up. Achermann is white, about 5 feet 9 and weighs about 175 pounds. He has a gray beard and usually walks with a cane. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to call the Sheriff's Office at 1-800-450-2677. Man's disappearance takes toll on family during holidays
By MATT ERICKSON Staff Writer It's been four months since Peter Achermann disappeared. The season has changed from summer to fall, the leaves have fallen off the trees and deer hunters trodding through the woods around Leader have failed to turn up any clue as to the whereabouts or fate of the 82-year-old rural Leader man. The absence of Peter Achermann, who disappeared four months ago, will make the holiday season a difficult one for his family. For Achermann's family, the absence of the family patriarch will make the holiday season a difficult one. "It's unreal. This whole upcoming season is going to be pretty hard on everybody," said Achermann's daughter, Desiree Greenwaldt. "I really believe if we knew that he was dead, if he would have had a heart attack or never woke up from a nap, it would be so much different than him just walking off and disappearing like that. "But life goes on, we still celebrate the holidays, still celebrate new babies. You can't get caught up in the misery but it's very trying." Achermann was last seen on July 24, the day before his granddaughter's wedding. He had stopped by Greenwaldt's home to see how the wedding preparations were coming along before driving See ACHERMANN, Page 5A into Motley and Staples to run errands. It would be the last time anyone had seen Achermann. "We were planning for a wedding and he was so excited," Greenwaldt said, her voice cracking with emotion. "When he left that day he gave me a hug and said, 'I'll see you later' and I never saw him later." The only clue to his disappearance left behind was Achermann's 1995 Chevrolet station wagon, found stuck in a mud hole on a minimum maintenance road about 10 miles from his home the day after he was reported missing. Months of searching by family, friends, law enforcement, volunteers, the National Guard, search and rescue dogs - hundreds of people in all - have failed to turn up any clue as to the whereabouts of Achermann. Greenwaldt said family effort, which at first included daily treks into the field and woods surrounding the area where Achermann's vehicle was found, have since slowed but are not stopping. Though the rifle deer hunt didn't result in finding Achermann, Greenwaldt remains hopeful that the continuing bow and muzzleloader deer hunts will and asks that hunters keep an eye out for anything suspicious and call law enforcement if they find something. The Minnesota Search and Rescue Dog Association has picked up the search left off by Denny Adams, who spent several months searching for Achermann before returning home to South Dakota. And Greenwaldt said Minnesota Army National Guard Lt. Col. Eric Waage will be assisting the Cass County Sheriff's Department with investigating the terrain and possible evidence. "It's another set of eyes," Greenwaldt said. For the Cass County Sheriff's Department, foul play can't be ruled out. "From a sheriff's perspective, every day he continues to be missing it becomes less likely it's a voluntary disappearance," Fisher said. The case will remain active until Achermann is found, Fisher said, and the sheriff's department continues to meet with family. He said the case has been challenging for the sheriff's department. "But any frustration we may have certainly can not compare to what the family is feeling for their husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather," Fisher said. Like Greenwaldt, Fisher hoped hunters and property owners would keep an eye out for anything suspicious and report it to their local law enforcement agency or the Cass County Sheriff's Department at (800) 450-2677 or (218) 547-1424. Sheriff: Reward Increased to $20,000 For Missing Staples Man
WALKER, MINN. - The Cass County Sheriff's Office released Thursday the reward for the Staples man who has been missing since July 24, 2009 has been increased and extended. In Dec. 2009 the Cass County Sheriff's Office announced a reward of $10,000 offered in the search for 82-year-old Peter Achermann; but now authorities and family of Achermann increased the reward to $20,000. Achermann was last seen in the Staples/Motley area on July 24, 2009. Authorities found his vehicle following a search on a minimum maintenance road in Becker Township in Cass County. Achermann walks with a cane and usually wears a hat his family said. The $20,000 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person (s) responsible for Achermann's disappearance if this determined as foul play authorities said. The reward is made possible by a benefit set up for Achermann called "For Pete's Sake". The reward would remain in effect until Sep. 15, 2010. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cass County Sheriff's Office at 218-547-1424 or 1-800-450-2677. Jul 21, 2010 10:14 am US/Central 1 Year Later, Mystery Surrounds Missing Motley Man Reporting
John Lauritsen MOTLEY, Minn. (WCCO) ¯ Click to enlarge1 of 1 Peter Achermann disappeared in July 2009. Achermann Family At 82, Peter Achermann wasn't known to venture far. The weekend he disappeared in July 2009 was also the same weekend his granddaughter was set to get married. He disappeared after a trip to the grocery store. Police found his car on his granddaughter's wedding day, miles away from his home. "It's been a year of firsts -- the first Christmas without him, the first birthday without him," said Achermann's daughter, Desiree Greenwaldt. "We've kind of run out of places to search." Volunteers led a search effort last summer. They were soon joined by the National Guard, pushing through miles of thick foliage and swamp to find Achermann. They found nothing. In the last year, family members and search groups have covered more than 1,000 acres of ground in Cass County. Bloodhounds were even recruited to assist in the search. "I'll turn to ask him a question or just tell him the news," said his wife, Delaine Achermann. "Where is he?" There was no sign of foul play, leaving authorities without even so much as a theory as to what may have happened to Achermann. Reward signs in the area offering $20,000 have turned up no leads. The longer Achermann's disappearance goes without any signs of hope, the more family members are left to contemplate the worst. "It's a scary thought to think that someone hurt him," said Greenwaldt. "I think it's a very real possibility, a very scary possibility." Until the family gets closure on the case, there will be no funeral. Until then, his children and more than 20 grandchildren have to wait for an answer. http://wcco.com/local/missing.man.anniversary.2.1816503.html |

Staples man is still missing By MATT ERICKSON Staff Writer The last time anyone saw Peter Achermann, he was shopping in Staples. That was last Friday, almost a full week ago. What happened to the 82-year-old rural Leader man after that is anyone's guess. His vehicle was found Saturday night about 10 miles from his home north of Leader. The vehicle, a 1995 Chevrolet station wagon, was on a minimum maintenance road, hung up in a mud hole. It's from that point that law enforcement, family, friends and volunteers have started their searches. So far no sign of Achermann has been found. "We're scared. He's been gone for so long," said family friend Betty Gold. Gold said Achermann should be easy to spot if someone meets him. He is white man, about 5-foot-9, 175 pounds and has a black and gray beard and generally walks with a cane. He is also distinguishable by the crocheted berets he always wears and by his pleasant demeanor, Gold said. "He is a character and an interesting man, a very, very interesting man," said Gold, who has known Achermann and his family for decades. "If you ever saw him, or talked to him, you would never forgot Peter." Searches have included foot patrols, on horseback and all-terrain vehicle, in the air with helicopters and with scent-finding K9 units. It's all been concentrated in the area where Achermann's vehicle was found, said Cass County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Tom Burch. The searches will continue, he said. "We'll do as much as we can until we run out of area to search," Burch said. "What we find dictates how long we continue." Burch said foul play cannot be ruled out at this point but there's been nothing found that would indicate Achermann's disappearance is criminal. He said according to the family, Achermann was in good health and on no medications. His only infirmity was that he needed a cane to get around. "It's really a strange thing," Burch said. "If we could answer some of these things we wouldn't be where we are. We don't know where to look except around where his vehicle was found." A woman who answered the phone at Achermann's home on 60th Street Southwest said all inquiries should be made to the sheriff's department. Gold said Achermann is a native of Switzerland and was very proud of the farm he set up north of Leader. He loved visiting with people, philosophizing on politics and was proud of the home he built in the United States. He had intended to speak at his granddaughter's wedding last Saturday, the day after he disappeared, Gold said. "He is a happy, loving man and his wife is the same way. They are loving family," Gold said. "Family is so important to him, that's why I know something had to happen to him. You can't get the prayers out of your mind because your so worried." Anyone with information on Achermann's whereabouts is asked to call the Cass County Sheriff's Department at (800) 450-2677 or at (218) 547-3394. |

Published August 07 2009 Missing man seach enters third week, search effort needs help By: AP wire report, The Associated Press STAPLES - Peter Achermann has been missing for more than two weeks. Authorities, family and friends have been searching every day since without any success and are getting tired. Two Minnesota legislators Thursday asked for search assistance from the Minnesota National Guard. Acherman, 82, of rural Staples, has been missing since July 24 when he was traveled to Staples on family errands. He was last seen at Ernie’s Food Store in Staples the afternoon of July 24. He also visited the Lakewood Health System Hospital in Staples that afternoon. He was scheduled to attend a wedding groom's dinner the night he went missing and a granddaughter's wedding the following day. He never appeared at either family event. His disappearance is out of character for him, according to his family. He has always called if he was going to be late for any reason, said Delaine Achermann, his wife of 56 years. The car he was driving was found July 25 stuck on a dead-end minimum maintenance road in Cass County's Becker Township, located about six miles northeast of Staples. The search for Achermann is now in its 15th day. The Achermann search has not found any new significant clues since locating his car July 25 on a remote minimum-maintenance road in Becker Township. The search area is nearly 25 miles southwest of Ackermann’s rural farm located north of Leader. Family and friends have been searching every day, rain or shine. They are searching through heavy woods, thick brush and swampland of Becker Township. It is a tiring and heart-wrenching search. State Representatives John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, and Al Doty, DFL-Royalton, wrote a letter to Gov. Tim Pawlenty requesting assistance from the Minnesota National Guard. They believe the Guard assistance will help make the search more effective and bring fresh searchers to the effort. The number of search volunteers, which numbered hundreds in the early days of the search effort, has declined this week. The Achermann family just wants to find Peter and bring him home. Peter and Delaine Achermann have 11 children, 21 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 13 foster children. Authorities have expanded the geographic search area this week to a 3-mile radius around the location where Achermann's abandoned car was found. Multiple search dog teams are working sectors of the search area every day. Achermann is a white man, about 5-foot-9, 175 pounds, has a gray beard, and generally walks with a cane. He did not have dementia or Alzheimer’s. |

Family asking for any information on the whereabouts of Peter Achermann Tina Snell, Staff Writer 8/20/2009 9:54:00 AM Peter Achermann, 82, of rural Motley was reported missing by his wife July 24. He has not been seen since that day, over four weeks ago. Delaine, Achermann's wife of 56 years, said he left the house and went to Motley to run errands that day. He stopped at his daughter Desiree Greenwaldt's home to drop off baby's breath for the upcoming wedding of his granddaughter Simone Greenwaldt. He then stopped at Brick's Travel Center, also in Motley, where he bumped into his son Mike, who was in town for his niece's wedding. The two had coffee and visited. From there, Achermann went to Lakewood Health System in Staples to pick up a prescription of Vicodin for Delaine. While there, he visited with employees. After leaving Lakewood, he drove to Ernies Foods in Staples where he picked up a few items, again visiting with employees. After that, Achermann disappeared. "Everyone we and the police have spoken to said he was of good mind and spirits," said Greenwaldt. "He was excited about my daughter's wedding. He wouldn't have just disappeared by himself." Saturday, July 25, his car was reported found on 85th Street, a minimum maintenance road north of Warner Road in Cass County. Delaine said others have said they saw the car there on July 24. "He was expected home about 2 p.m. Friday," said Delaine. "When he didn't arrive at 3 p.m., I called friends to see if he stopped there. When he wasn't home for supper, I called the authorities, and they came immediately." A four-mile radius from the car was searched extensively by as many as 150 people each day, during the first days Achermann was reported missing. "Everyone from the community came out to help Saturday night after the wedding," said Greenwaldt. "Since then, people have searched by ATV, horse and walked shoulder-to-shoulder through the brush. Twenty-six dogs were brought in, helicopters came, as did private planes. The National Guard was here for two days searching. Nothing has been found." There has been no indication of foul play, and no items that Achermann usually carried with him have been found. The Vicodin was laying on the front seat of the car and there has been no activity on his credit cards or his checking account. "But, since we have found nothing, we do worry about foul play," said Greenwaldt. "Peter had no enemies," said Delaine. "Everyone liked him. He was a senior companion, driving the elderly to appointments and helping them with grocery shopping. Not in our wildest dreams would we think anyone would hurt him." But, on the other hand, Achermann was so willing to help others, he would have stopped to help a stranded motorist or a hitchhiker. His wife said he would have even driven them to their destination. "We have heard the Cass County Sheriff's Department has leads and are following through," said Greenwaldt. "But, they tell us they have no clue yet what happened." Achermann walked with a cane and was wearing a red, white and blue, floppy, beret-styled hat. His glasses were on a leather strap and he always wore a crucifix around his neck. None of these articles have been located. If anyone has any information about the disappearance of Peter Achermann, the family and the authorities are asking them to call the Cass County Sheriff's Department at 1 (800) 450-2677. |

Staples Community Holds Benefit to Continue Searching for Missing Man Posted at: 10/23/2009 5:34 PM | KSAX.com By: Megan Matthews Motley, Minn. – Saturday marks 90 days since Staples resident Peter Achermann vanished without a trace, and friends and the community are holding a benefit “For Pete’s Sake.” “It really makes a person realize how much people do care,” Desiree Greenwaldt said. Desiree is Achermann’s daughter, and she’s doing everything she can to find her dad, who went missing back in July, including helping out with her dad’s benefit. “We don’t have the means to keep going and going, so this is a way to let people help and fund our search for dad,” Desiree explained. Friends and family set up table after table of donated items for Saturday’s benefit. There will be food and a silent auction. All of the proceeds will help continue the search for Peter Achermann. “If we don’t keep pushing, if we don’t keep looking it could be a file that gets shut and it’s a cold case. That’s not good enough for us and that’s not good enough for dad,” Desiree said with tears in her eyes. The only lead in the search is Achermann’s car, and Desiree is still looking for answers. “There’s that nagging voice in the back of your head that says maybe someone took him and hurt him. If that’s the case we still need to bring him home. We still need to find him and bring him home,” Desiree said, “We still look down the road. We still look out to see if he’s coming down the road. We still look out to see if he’s coming across the yard. We keep waiting for the phone to ring.” She says the search won’t stop until Peter Achermann is back home. “We won’t quite. We won’t quit looking for him. We won’t quit searching. We’ll keep praying until he comes home to us, one way or another.” Desiree said. |

Three years later and still no trace of Peter Achermann's disappearanceBy KBJR News 1
Three years later and still no trace of Peter Achermann's disappearance July 26, 2012 Updated Jul 26, 2012 at 10:34 AM CDT Walker, MN (Northland’s NewsCenter) – It’s been three years since the disappearance of Peter Achermann, the man who left his residence to run errands and was last seen on Warner Road, by the Crow Wing River Bridge. Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch says that Achermann, of Staples, Minnesota, says that he was last seen by the bridge between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. on July 24, 2009. News Fast. News First. Subscribe for text alerts, e-news & more. His vehicle, a light blue 1995 Chevrolet Caprice Wagon, was located off County Road 32, at the end of a minimum maintenance road on July 25. Despite extensive searches of the area, no trace of Achermann has been found. Sheriff Burch says that the Sheriff’s Office has been working with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and is determined to solving this case. Peter Achermann of Staples left his residence on July 24, 2009 to run errands and was last seen on Warner Road by the Crow Wing River bridge between 12:00-1:00 PM.
