Hermantown PD to Reopen Cold Case Posted at: 05/08/2012 6:17 PM | Updated at: 05/09/2012 8:49 AM By: Paige Calhoun In April of 1976, Hermantown Police said they responded to the 3900 block of Lavaque Road to investigate the discovery of a dead human body. When officers arrived, they found skeletal remains partially unearthed in the backyard area of the residence. Along with deteriorated clothing, coins, and other personal effects. At the time investigators were not able to identify the person, or the cause of death, but they believe the death occurred between 1961 and 1972. With the advent of DNA analysis and further investigative resources the Hermantown Police Department, with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the St Louis County Sheriff's Department, the St Louis County Medical Examiner's Office and Hamline University Forensic personnel, is reopening this case in an attempt to identify the person. Hermantown Police said through recent examination of the remains, the following conclusions have been made: White male, approximately 30-50 years of age at time of death. 5'3" to 5'11" tall, advanced osteoarthritis, developmental defect noted suggests the man walked with a limp favoring his right side, which may be attributable to a childhood disease, upper and lower dentures, upper teeth porcelain, lower teeth plastic. Police also said remnants of clothing found on or near the body include: leather work boots, wool trousers, "Mackinaw" type wool hat, long winter underwear, "Blizzard" railroad type cap with fur lined earflaps, suspenders, knee length wool socks, leather chopper type mittens with green wool liners, possible sweater. Also located was a cigarette lighter with letters ATC on the base as well as LUX Japan and there were also several coins with the most recent mint date of 1961. DNA was recently extracted from the remains and a match will be possible if authorities receive DNA from any living relative. If you know any missing person or relative in the Northern Minnesota area that may fit that description, contact Deputy Chief Shawn Padden at the Hermantown Police Department at (218)-729-1200. |

Police reopen case of skeletal remains found 36 years ago in the Northland
The Hermantown Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man whose skeletal remains were found more than 36 years ago. By: Steve Kuchera, Duluth News Tribune The Hermantown Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man whose skeletal remains were found more than 36 years ago. With advances in DNA analysis and further investigative resources, the department has reopened the case. DNA was recently extracted from the remains, and may identify the remains if authorities receive a DNA sample from a living relative. The remains were found April 16, 1976, by children playing in the woods behind their two-year old home on the 3900 block of Lavaque Road. The nearly complete skeleton was covered over with moss and undergrowth. At the time a St. Louis County deputy medical examiner said there was no evidence of foul play. Authorities never were able to determine a cause of death, but believe the person died between 1961 and 1972. Based on recent extensive examination of the remains, authorities believe the man was white, approximately 30 to 50 years old, 5’3” to 5’11” tall, had advanced osteoarthritis, likely walked with limp favoring his right side which may have been from a childhood disease, and had upper dentures with porcelain teeth and lower dentures with plastic teeth. Found on or near the remains were leather work boots, wool trousers, a Mackinaw-style wool hat, long winter underwear, a Blizzard railroad-style cap with fur-lined earflaps, suspenders, knee-length wool socks, leather chopper-style mittens with green wool liners, and possibly a sweater. Also found were a cigarette lighter with the letters “A.T.C.” and “LUX Japan” on the base, and several coins – the more recent minted in 1961. Anyone who knows of a missing person or a relative of a missing person matching the description is asked to contact Hermantown Police Department Deputy Chief Shawn Padden at (218) 729-1200. Hermantown is reopening the case with the help of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Medical Examiner, and Hamline University forensic personnel. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/231070/ |
