ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hughes was last seen on 08/17/2008 at 1500 hours leaving his home in Williamsville, VT for a business meeting in Provincetown, MA. On 08/20/08 Hughes’ wife received an envelope via US Mail from Hughes. The envelope contained letters to his family indicating that he was planning to commit suicide in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. New Hampshire State Police located Hughes’ vehicle at the location specified in the letters. A search for Hughes was conducted by NHSP and NH Fish & Wildlife with negative results.

New Hampshire Officials Search for Missing Vermont Hiker

A search is currently underway in New Hampshire for a missing Vermont hiker.

The New Hampshire fish and Game Department is searching for Robert Hughes, 59, of Williamsville, Vermont, who is missing on the Zealand Falls Trail in the Pemigewasset Wilderness area of the White Mountain National Forest.

Officials are focusing their search on the Zealand Falls Trail, because Hughes was last seen being dropped off at the trailhead by the Appalachian Mountain Club shuttle at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The search for Hughes began on Tuesday afternoon, when concerned family members reported him missing to authorities. Hughes' family described him as being in a despondent state of mind. His vehicle was found parked at the AMC Highland House in Crawford Notch, N.H., and it was reported that he had attempted to make lodging reservations for Tuesday night at AMC's Zealand Falls Hut, though the cell phone transaction was not completed.

N.H. Fish and Game Conservation Officers are being assisted in the search by New Hampshire State Police detectives and helicopter, U.S. Forest Service personnel, Appalachian Mountain Club staff, Upper Valley Wilderness Search and Rescue team members, Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue personnel and New England K-9 Search and Rescue teams.

WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST, N.H. -- A search is under way for hiker Robert Hughes, 59, of Williamsville, Vt., who is missing on the Zealand Falls Trail in the Pemigewasset Wilderness area of the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is coordinating the search effort. The search is focused on the Zealand Falls Trail, because Hughes was last seen being dropped off at the trailhead by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) shuttle at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
