Teams resume search for missing Murrysville man

Search and rescue teams this morning resumed their efforts to locate a Murrysville man who left his home Tuesday night and has not been seen since.
The missing man is Wilbert Darr, 74, of Glendale Lane.

Assisting in the search for Darr are the Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group, Westmoreland County Team 211 Rough Terrain Fire & Rescue, Murrysville EMS, firefighters, Medic 1 and police officers, along with Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety's mobile command center.

Police spent Wednesday searching for Darr on foot, using search dogs and a helicopter. They also went door to door in his neighborhood.

The search was called off after dark Wednesday night and resumed at 8 a.m. today, Murrysville Police Chief Thomas Seefeld said,
"What we are doing today is searching a heavily wooded area we didn't search yesterday," Seefeld said this morning.

The search will expand out several miles from Darr's home, he said.

Seefeld said it was typical for Darr to go for walks in his neighborhood.

"He's in fairly good health," Seefeld said.

Darr was wearing a gray T-shirt when he left. He is 6 feet tall and weighs about 195 pounds. He is balding and wears glasses.

Search efforts to widen for missing Murrysville man

A 74-year-old Murrysville man remained missing Thursday night, despite the efforts of numerous search and rescue teams.
Wilbert Darr walked away from his Glendale Lane home Tuesday evening and has not been seen since.

Searching for Darr yesterday were members of the Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group, Westmoreland County Team 211 Rough Terrain Fire & Rescue, Murrysville EMS, firefighters, Medic 1 and police officers. Dogs and all-terrain vehicles were used in the search.

The Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety's mobile command center coordinated communication between the groups.

Police spent Wednesday searching on foot, using dogs and a helicopter. They also went door to door in his neighborhood.
The search was called off after dark Wednesday and resumed at 8 a.m. yesterday, Murrysville police Chief Thomas Seefeld said.

The search area was expected to widen several miles from Darr's home, he said.

Seefeld said Darr often walked in his neighborhood.

Seefeld said Darr was believed to have a pacemaker, but that he remained active.

"He's of sound mind and body," he said.

Police said Wilbert Darr's wife reported him missing at about 10 a.m. Wednesday. Police spent much of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday searching the woods around the couple's home, but did not find any sign of Darr.

"It's somewhat of a mystery and kind of a little discouraging," said Chief Thomas Seefeld of the Murrysville Police Department.

Police said the search ended at 6 p.m. Friday and there will be no additional searches.

Darr is described as being 6 feet tall, weighing about 195 pounds. He is balding and was last seen wearing his glasses and a gray T-shirt.
Darr is in good health and often likes to walk around the neighborhood, according to his wife.

Margaret Darr often thinks about May 27, 2008.

That was the day her husband, Wilbert, who would now be 75, went for a walk in Murrysville and never returned.

There is no trace of his whereabouts.

"It seemed like that just happened," Margaret Darr said. "It was a beautiful day that day, warm for May. But it got awful cold that night. He loved going to the woods. He walked quite a bit."

Darr left his house along Glendale Lane at about 7:30 that night. His wife reported him missing at about 10 the next morning.

Emergency personnel searched a 1.25-mile area in all directions from Darr's house. Search dogs and a helicopter found nothing.

There was no sign of a struggle. Margaret Darr said her husband had an occasional memory lapse, but no major family issues to trouble him.

The fact that Darr did not have a cell phone and did not carry credit cards stalled the investigation.

"We did our search for a couple days," said Murrysville police Chief Tom Seefeld. "We tried to run down the few leads we had. We haven't come up with one clue about his whereabouts. It's discouraging. I feel bad for the family."

Detectives periodically check in with Margaret Darr to see if she has any new information.

"It would be nice if there was closure of some sort," Seefeld said. "We're still looking for people that have any information. We'll follow up on any information, until there's a resolution."

Wilbert Darr loved his walks, even though he had health issues including high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

"If he missed his walk he'd go when he came home," his wife said. "I've been told with the medicine he was on, he wouldn't have lasted more than a week. Nothing's been touched — the checking account, nothing. There's no pills ordered. "

Margaret Darr said she takes some comfort in the efforts of Murrysville police.

"Twenty-eight years of doing this business, there are certain cases that bother you the rest of your career. This is one of them," Seefeld said. "(Not knowing) the whereabouts of this gentleman will remain with me. It will always be on my mind."

For Margaret Darr, not knowing is the hardest part. What happened to the man who wasn't there to celebrate their 23 years of marriage on Saturday? She would just like to know something.

"Whatever it is, it has to be better than not knowing," she said. "He was a very well-liked person, a very good husband. I miss him terribly, especially not knowing what's going on. He never went anywhere without me. He would go fishing once in awhile, but he never would go without asking me. We were always together. We were together that whole day.

"I have no idea what's going on," she said. "I just take each day one at a time."

Case Details

Mr Darr was last seen on Tuesday evening, May 23, 2008 when he left his home in the Village of Clover Ridge retirement community, near Sand Dune Road and Logan's Ferry Road in Plum Borough, to go for a walk. There is a heavily wooded area nearby, with a nature walk, and Mr Darr was known to frequently walk the trails there. His wife reported him missing at about 10am the following morning.

An intensive 3-day search was conducted in the area including personnel from Murrysville Police, the Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group, Westmoreland County Team 211 Rough Terrain Fire & Rescue, Murrysville EMS, Medic 1 and firefighters. Search dogs, a helicopter and all-terrain vehicles were also utilized in the search. A command center was set up by the Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety to coordinate communication between the groups, but no trace of Mr Darr was found.
