Authorities say missing Ocean City man left with more than one person

OCEAN CITY – A year after 22-year-old John Weisbecker went missing from his Ocean City home, FBI special agents announced the offer of a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to his recovery.

FBI agents, members of the Ocean City Police Department and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, and Weisbecker’s mother and father attended a press conference last Thursday seeking more information on the missing man.

Special Agent Joe Furey said investigators believe that Weisbecker disappeared under suspicious circumstances shortly before noon on Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Furey said that evidence from Weisbecker’s residence indicates that more than one person was likely involved in his disappearance and more than one person likely has information that could facilitate his recovery.

The FBI also believes that Weisbecker was likely familiar with the people who caused his disappearance, and the people involved are likely familiar with the Cape May County area, Furey said.

“There have been several people who have been hesitant to cooperate with the investigation,” he said.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who has information to come forward, he said.

“Even someone who may have had marginal involvement in the disappearance is being encouraged to contact authorities,” Furey said.

John Weisbecker was supposed to start a new job at Kessel’s the next day, but disappeared instead. On the day he went missing, Weisbecker left his car and his paycheck at the house where he lives with his mother and sister. He disappeared without a trace not long after sending his mother out to buy him a few new shirts.

A visibly distraught Jennifer Powell, Weisbecker’s mother, said she wanted closure.

“John is my only son, the oldest of two children,” she said.

Last seen by the mailman at 11 a.m. on the day he disappeared, Powell said she knew something was wrong later that day when she called and he did not answer his cell phone.

Her concerns took flight when she realized that no one had heard from him at all that day.

“I think of my son every day,” she said. “I need to know what happened to John and where he is. I am asking anyone with information to please come forward.”

Weisbecker was at home when a postal carrier delivered the mail shortly after 11 a.m. on March 11. About an hour later, his mother tried to call him but his phone went straight to voicemail. Later that evening when she arrived home, Weisbecker was gone. By midnight, his mother was distressed enough to phone the police.

Furey said it is believed that Weisbecker left the house with more than one person.

“Based on the information that we have, based on the location of the home, he would not have left with just one person and one person would not have been able to keep him from returning,” he said. “We believe that more than one person is involved.”

Furey said there was nothing to indicate a violent struggle. Rather, it was more likely Weisbecker left with more than one acquaintance.

The FBI is working in conjunction with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s office and the Ocean City Police Department on the case.

Weisbecker was born on Dec. 30, 1987. He is 6’2” tall and weighed 180 pounds when last seen. He has brown hair and blue eyes.

Furey said information could be discreetly provided via Crime Stoppers at 465-2800, to the FBI at (973) 973-3000 or to e-mail at www.fbi.gov.

Ocean City police ask help to find missing man
By MICHAEL MILLER Staff Writer, 609-463-6712

OCEAN CITY - Police are asking the public's help in finding a city man who disappeared last week.

The family of John Weisbecker, 21, reported his disappearance to police Thursday.

A U.S. Postal Service carrier who delivered mail to Weisbecker's north-end home about 11 a.m. Wednesday was the last person known to have seen him.

"He saw him in the living room when he was delivering the mail," said the missing man's father, Upper Township resident Joseph Weisbecker.

John Weisbecker grew up in Ocean City and graduated from the high school in 2006. He was unemployed at the time of his disappearance but was getting ready to start a new job.

He lived in a home he shared with his mother, Jennifer Weisbecker, and a sister.
Weisbecker was supposed to begin work last Thursday at Kessel's Corner, a restaurant on 28th Street in Ocean City, which like most resorts has fewer jobs in the off-season.

The Major Crimes Unit of the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office and police are investigating the circumstances of his disappearance. Anyone with information about Weisbecker's whereabouts can call 609-399-9111.

Police Lt. Steven Ang said Weisbecker was not in any legal trouble at the time of his disappearance. He has no outstanding court warrants and is not wanted by police.

Police observed no activity in his financial accounts or on his cell phone since he disappeared last week.

"We're exploring all possibilities," Ang said. "We reached out to his friends in state and out-of-state. Sometimes we get people who just don't want to be found. The family is going through a lot of stress here. We ask anyone with information to call police or the family just so they know he's safe. Our concern is making sure something bad didn't happen to him."

Joseph Weisbecker said his son has never taken a trip without telling someone where he was going. He said he hopes his son is just keeping a low profile for some reason.

"He might be hanging around with the wrong crowd," his father said. "We're kind of numb. We just want to know he's OK somewhere. I don't care if he's in Timbuktu. We just want him to come home."

Police said Weisbecker has brown hair and a mustache and was last seen wearing dark jeans, "ES" brand sneakers and a T-shirt with the word "seedless" on the front. Weisbecker has tattoos on both arms and his torso.

John Weisbecker, above, had only a moustache when he disappeared from his Ocean City home.

OCEAN CITY - An Ocean City family is making another appeal to the public for help finding a 21-year-old man who disappeared from his north-end home March 1.

John Weisbecker asked his mother, Jennifer Powell, to pick up some new shirts for his seasonal job that was to begin the next day.

A few hours later, at about 11 a.m., a postal carrier saw Weisbecker when he delivered the day's mail, including Weisbecker's unemployment check.

Powell tried to call her son at about noon from her job in Vineland but his cell phone went straight to voicemail. When she came home at about 8:30 p.m. after work and a trip to the store, he was gone.

His car, a Lincoln LS, was parked outside. His unemployment check was sitting in an uncharacteristically messy pile of mail on the counter. The kitchen stools seemed pushed out of place, too. But nothing else in the home hinted at anything out of the ordinary, Powell said. By midnight, when he still had not returned, Powell called police.

In the months that have passed, neither the family nor police have been able to determine what happened to the 2006 Ocean City High School graduate.

"It's like he vanished off the face of the Earth, but people just don't do that," his mother said. "It's like living in a nightmare."

Police in Ocean City reached out for help from the New Jersey State Police and the FBI, which brought their missing-persons expertise to bear on the case. Weisbecker's DNA and physical description were entered into the FBI's National Crime Information Center.

Detectives in Ocean City work the case every day, Lt. Steven Ang said.

"We're retracing our steps, going back over everything we've done from Day One," Ang said. "We re-interviewed some people. We try to make sure we haven't missed anything or overlooked anything from the beginning."

But police have been equally frustrated in finding answers.

"It's hard to believe an individual could vanish in Ocean City from that location in broad daylight and nobody saw him or has information about who he went with. Someone has something they're not telling," Ang said. "There is someone out there who knows. We just don't know who."

Weisbecker apparently had his wallet and cell phone when he left the Second Street house. But he has not used the phone. His car was repossessed in the months after his disappearance.

He has not taken money out of two bank accounts or used his credit card.

Powell calls his cell phone every day, only to get voicemail.

"I'm hoping for the best but I keep going to the worst," she said.

Powell said her son did not appear at all depressed or suicidal in the days before he disappeared. He was looking forward to returning to his seasonal job at a local restaurant. He had friends and enjoyed playing video games and watching movies. He talked about going to culinary school.

Standing 6 feet tall, it seems unlikely anyone could overpower him, Powell said. When he left the house, he probably did so willingly with someone he knew, she said.

Whenever he went somewhere, it was by car. He would even drive to the convenience store a few blocks from his house.

Powell talked to all of her neighbors, including employees at the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation, but nobody said they saw anything that day. The side door of the family's north-end home is not visible from the street.

Powell said she wishes her son's friends would stay in closer contact with her. In the meantime, she and police are asking witnesses to come forward.

Weisbecker has brown hair and a mustache and was last seen wearing dark jeans, "ES" brand sneakers and a T-shirt with the word "seedless" on the front. He has tattoos on both arms and his torso. Ocean City police can be reached at 609-399-9111.

"Someone has to know what happened to him. For a mother's peace of mind, there are anonymous ways to let me know. Please, let me know," she said.

Police to Announce Reward in Missing Persons Case

03/09/2010

OCEAN CITY — Law enforcement officials are announcing a new effort to help locate a missing local man.

At 3 p.m. on March 11, Ocean City police, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation will hold a press conference to announce a reward offer in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of John Weisbecker. The press conference will take place at the Ocean City police headquarters at 835 Central Ave.

The date of the announcement is significant because it was March 11 last year that Weisbecker was last seen by his family, who reported him missing the next day.

Weisbecker is described as a white male, brown hair, brown mustache, last seen wearing a black t-shirt with “SEEDLESS” across the front, dark jeans, and brown “ES” brand sneakers. According to police, Weisbecker has numerous tattoos on his torso and both arms.

Attempts to contact Weisbecker have been unsuccessful and information gained from family and friends have not provided any information on his whereabouts.

Ocean City police have characterized the case as suspicious.

Weisbecker’s family and friends held a candlelight vigil for him on Dec. 11 at Ocean City's Veterans Memorial Park at Sixth and Wesley avenues.

Police encourage anyone who may have contact with Weisbecker to contact the Prosecutor’s Office at (609) 465-1135, the Ocean City Police Department at (609) 399-9111, or Cape May County Crime Stoppers (609) 465-2800.

This week’s reward announcement is just the latest effort at finding Weisbecker. The various law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the case.

Last April, Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced a new anonymous tip texting capability his office had acquired. The announcement was made in Ocean City because of the Weisbecker case, Schaffer said.

Since the missing person is younger, someone who might know something about the case might also be young and more comfortable with texting a lead to police rather than calling a tip in, Schaffer suggested.

“Police have exhausted every lead into the Weisbecker disappearance,” Schaffer said. “We are hoping with this texting technology which preserves anonymity, someone will come forward with new information.”

Ocean City police continue searching for man who went missing two years ago

OCEAN CITY - Police are asking the public's help in finding a city man who has been missing for two years.

John T. Weisbecker, 24, was last seen around 10:30 a.m. March 11, 2009, by a postal carrier who delivered mail to Weisbecker's north end home on the 200 block of Asbury Avenue.

Weisbecker was getting ready to start a new job at a local deli. His disappearance has stumped both investigators and his family. Police Capt. Steven Ang said he is hoping a friend or acquaintance will volunteer any information they have.

"We had some signs in the house there might have been a struggle - that he didn't leave of his own free will," Ang said. "Some furniture was knocked around that his family noticed."

Police repeatedly interviewed numerous friends and acquaintances.

The FBI and State Police are also investigating and offered a $50,000 reward last year that generated no fresh leads, Ang said. Police monitored his bank and e-mail accounts but turned up no new activity.

Ang said the unexplained disappearance has been torture on Weisbecker's family.

"We've followed leads as far as Florida and California," he said. "For all we know he disappeared into thin air."

Weisbecker is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, 180 pounds with brown hair, blue eyes and tattoos on his arms and torso.

Anyone with information can call police at 399-9111 or Cape May County Crimestoppers anonymously at 465-2800.
