A Lac La Biche mother is fearing the worst after her 21-year-old daughter, who struggled with drug addiction in the past, went missing from downtown Edmonton over a week ago.

“It’s been eating me inside,” said Joanne Peterson of her daughter Ami Donna Peterson’s disappearance. “Everything was so positive in her life so this is so out of character for her.”

Ami was last seen about 3 p.m. on Oct. 6 near the Stanley Milner Library. The petite brunette, who stands at about five-foot-four and weighs about 105 pounds, was last seen wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and white shoes. She has a “made in Canada” tattoo on the back of her neck.

Her ID and purse were found at her basement suite home in the Kingsway area.

Joanne said Ami, a welder by trade, took many classes downtown and was likely catching a bus home in the area where she was last seen.

Ami struggled with addiction for many years, but had been clean for seven or eight months and was trying to regain visitation rights to see her three-year-old son, who is in Joanne’s care, her mother said.

Ami was also a mentor at work and maintained a great relationship with her family and friends.

Even during dark times, Ami still regularly kept in touch with Joanne.

“I fear she’s fallen into a bad crowd, or that she’s tied up somewhere in basement or someone’s nabbed her,” Joanne said. “I fear the worst.”

But Joanne, who is bedridden after abdominal surgery and cannot help in the search for her daughter, said she remains hopeful Ami will be found and continues to pray for her safe return.

“I just want her to call and tell me, ‘Mom, don’t worry.’ A phone call is all it takes.”
