Week: Mon 22nd Nov - Sun 28th Nov, 1980

Weather: Winter has suddenly taken over Autumn; it is absolutely frickin' freezing. Cold rain, strong, gusty winds and overnight frost and ice make the great outdoors a little too arctic for comfort.

If you're thinking of creating a character, we could use some more

...but it's not mandatory :)

In Character
Name: May Caitlin Young
Age/Birthdate: 32/2nd of February 1948
Occupation: Mudblood Martyr/Secretary/Job-hopper
Bloodline: Muggleborn

Appearance:
To a person spotting her walking down the street, May appears to be a tidy, neat and put-together woman with fine and shiny shoes and neatly ordered hair. When she stands, she never once lets her shoulders slump and she walks as if she has a purpose, even if it’s only to get the kettle of the stove.

Most of it is ingrained in her head, and it’s as much of a curse as a blessing to her. To May, it’s all a reminder of what she left behind, and though she quickly sheds this appearance whenever MM business is on the schedule, she can’t help but maintain the overall appearance that her mother pushed into her head.

The furthest May has attempted to rebel is by wearing darker coloured clothing such as deep blues, reds and a whole lot of grey and black. To her mother this would be horrifying as it brings out the paleness of her skin and makes any reddish blemish stand out a mile away (or so her mother would say). Technically, May’s skin is fairly average, but the dark clothing coupled with her very dark hair does give off the illusion of being slightly paler than she really is.

Although she’s been asked if she colours her hair, May has always vehemently denied doing so and since one is yet to see a clue that might contradict her statement, this would appear to be the truth, to the befuddlement of both her parents as she grew up.

As far as facial features go, May has neither an oversized nose nor obnoxiously large eyebrows and, to the great envy of her fellow classmates, managed to avoid most of the acne and pimples during her teenage years, giving her a relatively even complexion. Still, with a horrible habit of scratching her skin until it bleeds whenever she gets very upset, she does have some other things that she covers up by any means possible.

One wouldn’t guess it by looking into her closet, but May does own less-than-impeccable clothing and shoes. Usually brought up whenever a memory of her mother triggers a response in her to rebel or a mental image from school makes her want to claw her way out of her own skin. The clothing ranges from everything that’s dirty, worn and overall horrible to clothing that’s far too short to be decent or too that clashes horrible with several different kinds of colour. Basically anything that would have caused her mother to have a stroke or simply die upon seeing it. These are May’s precious bits and a very well-kept secret that she hides from everyone.

Character PB: Mia Kirschner

Personality:
Most of May’s life has been about pleasing her mother, even if it meant losing herself in the process, May would’ve done anything that her mother asked of her if it meant her acceptance. This trait continued when she was accepted into Hogwarts, although she now tried to please everyone around her as well as her mother, but did so in two very different ways. Typically May is quiet and none too bothered about being alone, although she deeply wishes to be accepted and find true friends, she’s gotten used to being lonely.

Although one could easily label May a sheep and be done with it, she’s more complex than that. She does follow the lead of the stronger individual, but she also knows her true feelings and values, even if she is, quite often, lead astray by promises of acceptance and friendship. Still, May isn’t completely spineless and though she’s been run over so many times the tire tracks are almost too obvious, she did snap, although it took her awhile.

This post-snap May is different, she wants revenge for all those years of feeling like a lesser being and being picked on and run over. The top dogs in the wizarding world are in her eyes the purebloods, although the half-bloods are equally as bad, she is, for now, staying with the cause of the MM.

May takes real pleasure in getting back at the people who used to spit at her and hex her, she enjoys the thrill of knowing that she’s using means that they see as below them to get back at them. Still, that little voice wishing for acceptance is still very much there, though it’s now accompanied by a deep hatred directed towards herself and her constant wish for acceptance. The thought of friendship and trust make her snort and while she fully supports the cause of the MM, she prefers to avoid the others and keep to herself whenever possible.

May is a very angry and very hurt woman, while she wishes revenge on the people who hurt her, she also wishes to see the purebloods weeping by her feet, by any means necessary. She can be cruel and she can be evil, but mostly, she wishes to use people and hurt people the way they hurt her. She’s broken and she’s messed up, but with God as her witness, she’s enjoying every minute of it.

Brief History:
Born into a seemingly happy marriage to a seemingly successful father, May’s childhood seems very average. She had a stay at home mother, a younger brother and even a dog, all that was lacking was the white picket fence and the tea parties, at least, so it seemed to outsiders.

While her home life wasn’t the worst place imaginable, it wasn’t exactly what one would call pleasant either. A constant tension constantly hung in the air, almost sparking with electricity whenever her father would return late home from work or not come home at all her mother took her distress out on the only one which she had any real influence on – her daughter.

From an early age May’s mother talked to her about the importance of appearances and the importance of finding a well-to-do husband and to maintain the appearance of a proper home life. To May’s mother, this had become her life’s mission and she planned to have May follow in the very same steps she’d taken so she could gush about it to her neighbours.

Being young, and enjoying the gentle warmth and joy her mother would show whenever the two were alone, May saw no reason not to go along with her mother’s wishes. She allowed her mother to fuss about her clothing, her way of walking and her way of speaking until she in many ways became a miniature version of her mother.

The more alike her mother she was, the happier her mother became and so May was desperate to keep up the illusion, even if she did occasionally look longingly out of her bedroom window wishing she was out there playing with the other children instead of practicing her penmanship at home.

One night when she was nine her father came home, reeking of alcohol and with lipstick on his face her mother’s immediate reaction was to make certain it had gone unnoticed by the neighbours. Giving May a wet cloth she told her to wash his face while she went outside to ensure that the car was locked and that there were no outward signs of what had happened.

Although May never really knew what happened between her parents after that night, she did notice that her father suddenly took to sleeping in the guest room and that he’d travel more often, but unlike with his previous journeys he never brought anything home to her or her brother anymore.

If May had been allowed outside to play with the other children she would’ve heard their whispers about the rumours their mothers were discussing over tea. As it was, May spent most of her time inside, occasionally going along with her mother to drink tea or go shopping with her friends. At school she was mostly alone as her mother had strictly told her to not partake in any activity that could spoil her dress or seem unladylike she spent most of her time standing, quietly, near the fence of the schoolyard watching the cars drive by.

Obviously, standing out like she did, the other children didn’t simply leave her alone. They pulled at her hair, threw soil and mud at her, attempted to trip her so she’d fall down the stairs or threw paper at her during class. As she got older, it only got worse.

Just a few months before the arrival of the letter from Hogwarts, May found herself talked into skipping out on class to go down to the girl’s loo. However, instead of going to the loo, they’d headed to the soccer field were a group of older boys had been standing. At first it’d seemed harmless, although May had desperately wanted to turn back and go back to class, the girls she were with persuaded her to come along with them to talk with them. “Talking” turned out to be something quite different than what May had imagined, finding herself with a tongue trust into her mouth she was frozen in utter fear and only broke out of it when she felt a hand travelling up her thigh. Abruptly pulling away she ran away, trying to ignore the teasing remarks from her “friends” and the other boys she ran to the loo were she locked herself in and stayed in until the teacher finally noticed her absence and went looking for her.

Once home, she got a hefty scolding and a slap across the face before she was told to go to her room and stay there, it’d be no dinner for her that night. May thought that had been the worst bit, but when she returned to school the next day she found that everyone was looking at her oddly, and it wasn’t until a large, dog-faced boy asked her if she’d enjoyed herself that she found out what everyone was looking at her for. Apparently, the boys had told the rest of the school that she’d let all of them touch and kiss her. Deeply shamed, May tried to pretend to be ill so she could stay home, but her mother saw right through the excuse. When asked what was the matter May tried to avoid the issue until she finally blurted it out. This earned her another slap and was told that she was an awful girl, a hussy.

Things didn’t get much better, then the letter arrived from Hogwarts and, while thoroughly sceptic to the idea about magic, her mother did think that sending her away might be for the best. She clearly couldn’t be trusted to go to school near home and her mother thought that sending her away might keep her out of trouble. Of course, if her mother had been less worried about the image of the family, and paid more attention to precisely what Hogwarts was, she might have been inclined to believe differently.

In the end, magic or no magic, her mother decided it was for the best. Far away from bad influences she hoped that her daughter would be able to mature into a proper young woman, after all, what more did a woman need to know than how to cook, clean and sew?

May’s first year at Hogwarts wasn’t a particularly life altering experience. After she found herself sorted into Hufflepuff, May quickly found herself at a loss as to what to do. After all, her mother had been the one who’d controlled any spare time that May had and with no one to supervise her, May had no clue as to what to do with herself.

She tried interacting with the other students, but they all seemed so cheery and happy about being there while May felt more like she’d been sent off as a punishment. Still, she enjoyed learning and found that she greatly enjoyed reading more intelligent and interesting literature than “The Housewives Guide to Gardening”.

Still, when she came home for the summer, all these books had to be packed away and she was once more firmly under her mother’s rule. She’d practice her penmanship and she’d cook and clean, she’d come along with her mother to shop and visit friends and she was to make no attempt at contacting anyone from the wizarding world. After all, explaining away that one owl form Hogwarts was more than enough, imagine the rumours if any more came by their house! May didn’t bother telling her mother than several of her housemates were muggles, like them, nor did she bother telling her that she didn’t really have any friends at school. She simply kept quiet and did like her mother told her to.

Back at school though, May turned to the books and read and studied as much as she possibly could. To her, it was a way to escape both her mother and the teasing and pitying look from the other students as she sat alone in the library pouring over books. Occasionally they’d take it a bit further, jinxing and hexing her, but even so, May found herself enjoying the freedom to sit however she liked and to write however she wanted (although several of her professors did give her remarks as to her excellent handwriting).

Mostly, May avoided the dormitory and common room whenever possible as she’d often find herself getting comments about having a horrible complexion, being too fat, being boring, being stupid and being well, a freak. It didn’t help much when people also began picking on her for her blood status and the hexing and jinxing increased further.

Keeping her head low, May stayed away from almost everyone, at least until people began approaching her. Or more appropriately, boys began approaching her. The first time it happened she was fifteen and enjoying the quiet of the library when a boy slipped by commenting on how nice her hair looked. This continued for awhile, until the boy asked her one day if she’d like to come with him to Hogsmeade. Simply happy that someone was, at last, talking to her without insulting her, May said yes and when he wanted to take things further than she wanted, she agreed because he said she’d likely not find anyone else who’d be willing to be seen with her.

And so it began, the boy who first came to her graduated a couple of years later and she never saw him again, but other boys approached her, always for the same thing, and, too happy about the fact that they were paying attention to her, she simply went along. It was only luck and the fact that the boys did take some precautions, which kept any “accidents” from happening.

Upon her graduation from Hogwarts, May was at a loss. She had decent grades, but she had a slipping reputation amongst her fellow graduates, her mother, unaware of the happenings at school, wished for her to return home so she could introduce her to a friend’s son.

At first, she went along, trying to go on about her life and pretend that the words “mudblood slut” had never been whispered in the halls of Hogwarts. She tried to do as her mother wished her too, desperate to be seen in a good light. Yet, one night when she went out with a few “friends” that her mother had introduced her to she had a little too much to drink and when she returned home she was drunk and had a rather large hickey on her neck. The very next day she found herself being thrown out of her childhood home, the excuse given to the neighbours by her mother was that she was going up north to care for her ill grandmother.

The actual truth? May found herself standing on the street with nowhere to go, for awhile she stayed at the Leaky Cauldron, finding a job at a muggle supermarket and eventually (with a LOT of luck) managing to find herself a decent enough apartment (at least, after she’d swished and flicked her wand a bit, it was).

She changed jobs from the supermarket to a low-paying job at the ministry sorting papers. At first, it worked out alright, but then she began seeing old “friends” from school and once more found herself in a situation all too familiar. Embarrassed and feeling like a fool, she hastily quit, telling her boss that she wanted a change of atmosphere. Mostly she just wanted to escape the nasty words she’d hear whispered down the hallways and occasionally thrown right at her face.

She found herself yet another job, this time as a secretary for a local dentist, filling out his paperwork and lying to his wife about where he was going once he was done working she tried to pretend nothing had ever happened. But it wasn’t so easy. She felt out of place, but more importantly, she was angry so when she accidentally ran into Magnus Hendry in a muggle pub, she didn’t think twice about agreeing to join the MM. She was tired of being abused, used and tossed away like trash while the rest of the world talked about her behind her back. The fact that they hadn’t all been pureblood didn’t matter, she wanted revenge.
