I am hoping to learn more about a boat which I have just purchased. She is a clinker halfdecker, about 18' on deck, with straight stem and almost vertical transom. She has a steel centreplate and transom-hung rudder. She has a short bowsprit, and sets a gaff mainsail. The only identification on board is a makers plate from "Cole & Wiggins, Leigh on Sea, Essex". She is currently called Valkyrie.
Various dates have been suggested for her, but I would say at least 1950, and perhaps even 1930's. It has been suggested that she may be a Westcliff One Design, and I would be interested to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of the class, or anyone who knows a little of the history of Cole & Wiggins yard. |

There is a picture of a Westcliff on Sea One Design (built by Cole & Wiggins) here:
http://www.rnyc.org.uk/history/news/veteran.htm#squib You might find a contact on that site who can help? As I started reading your description I thought "Hmm, sounds a bit like a Brightlingsea One Design (aka BOD)" - then I noticed your username is Bod! Mike |

Thanks Mike,
I've been in touch with the owner of Squib, who gave me some interesting information, though not enough to positively identify my boat as belonging to a particular class. What I have done is to eliminate a number of possibilities! Now, the Brightlinsea OD sounds interesting. Any pictures or information about them? |
