For me,the concept of the "Bad Guys" always fascinated me,as they are often the most tragic and charismatic characters in stories.Tragic in the sense that they often do not concieve of themselves as evil, and generally view their actions as justified. It is not them in the wrong, the universe is. Charismatic in the sense that they are not chained by concepts of morality, and therefore are capable of anything. They are the Id personified. Our desires given form.
The Horus Heresy introduced this concept in a perfect way to 40K.In the beginning,I played the Black Legion,as they seemed more of the Underdogs of the Traitor Legions. At odds with the others because they did not become slaves to any specific gods, but rather saw them all as a means to an end.
Time passed, and I went on to other armies. And the Traitor Legions went on as well. Evolved. Each Legion became more unique and distinct.
And it was then that I found Night Haunter and the Nightlords.
In the Nightlords I found a Legion that,IMHO,truly defines Chaos.Formless, faithless and without any other purpose than simply "being".
These qualities, coupled with the tragic history of Konrad Curze(the most tragic of all the Primarchs,IMO) led me to the Nightlords.
Like the Nightlords,I've never regretted the decision I made.

I suppose I'm going to start them mainly due to their style of play. I love the look in my opponents face when using Infiltrate/Deep strike I take out a unit he thought was safe. I also love the fluff of the Nightlords sowing fear and terror in the enemy armies and then killing them bit by bit.

Nightmare and Lord_Caerolion, I would have to say that your example is the reason I started NL as well.
IMO there is an extra dimension of character as far as chaos marines are concerned, which is not found in any of the other armies within 40k.
There is such a rich level of history, and such an epic scope concerning the stories behind them. As you said Nightmare, I love the almost heroic tragedy of the story. Of how (rightly or wrongly) they saw themselves cast out. Their father in the emporer, who had created them and taught them everything they know, casting them out as unwanted children. To this I think there is an almost bitterness in what they do, and also a great tragedy.
They were created for one thing alone, to kill, and now that any surrounding ideology is lost to them that is all that remains.
I remember reading a short story in a copy of white dwarf some years back, concerning the thoughts of a chaos marine. He had fought during the horus heresy, and remembered the loyalists turning them back at the gates of the emporer's palace. As he was regarding a dying loyalist marine he had found following a battle, he thought of the ten thousand years since, of how their initial flight to the eye of terror and organised raids against the imperium had been replaced by an insanity and a loss of purpose. He remarked on how his memories had been akin to 'wine overflowing from a goblet', and how he was not sure what was real and what was imagined. Thinking these things he finally lost control and emptied the magazine of his weapon into the already dead marine, screaming in rage at the lot the gods had given him. All that remained for him for him now was to kill!
I love the tragic (but extremely characterful) element to this, and thats why I chose the NL as a force!

The thing that drew me to the Night Lords was Night Haunters background. His background was the first of the primarchs that i had ever read, and i immediatly thought he was the coolest. His love of killing and every thing he does just drew me to him and his legion. And the fact that, to him, every act is justified. "I merely punished those that had wronged" in his eyes that was all he was doing and it somehow appealed to me. And still, after reading all the fluff i can find on other primarchs, all the deeds they have done, I still believe that following Haunter is the only way to go!

I had always like the look of the army and the fact that the NL were just evil, mean and bowed to no chaos power. I picked up the Lord of the Night novel and after reading that (good stuff!) I had to put the army together.

I wasn't interested in them at first. Actually, the batwinged helmets turned me completely off. I am one of those A.D.D. type people that can't stick with an army for long, always switching and such.
I had picked up the Index Astartes books and finally got around to reading the NL IA. Once I read it, and the section in the codex surrounding them, I became intrigued. Then I became interested. Then I started looking to collect an army. Then the A.D.D. set in again and I moved on to a different army.
I had decided to do WE, and was working on them, when the basic simplicity of just charging across the field of battle started to sound a little unappealing. So I looked around again, and came back to the NL, an army that allows me tactical flexibility.
Plus their fluff is really cool. I enjoy writing about any army that I play, and the NL provide me with an outstanding avenue to explore this.

When it comes down to it, the mental images surrounding the army, because I have so many of them. And because I feel that I can justify most any sort of (reasonable) army. I.E. I'm not going to go out there with two 5 man las-plas squads, two tooled HQ's, and raptors... but I think I could go out there with a heavy firepower army, or with a "We're chopping you into little bits by the second turn" army, without going against the whole concept in the fluff.

I like the story from the nightlords and also the fact that they show no mercy against anything that stands in their path. But most important of all I alway's loved playing with raptors and if their is one thing that nightlords have plenty of I'ts RAPTORS !!!!!!

I was inspired by Danek's post on the BnC and M3ntors night lords. I was also thinking of picking up the book Lord of the night. I don't think I will actually play night lords as an army. Mainly because I am tired of marines. But mainly the fluff is what has interested me.

to be honest. at first they kinda reminded me of the predator. wat with the trophy collecting n stealth n all. But then i read Lord Of the Night.... And all changed then i realised that the nightlords were more than just traitors. they were betrayed sons, vengeful warriors and more importantly...... it wasn't worship of chaos that made them evil they were just that evil anyway

Well, I was drawn to the Night Lords by the tragic history that surrounds them. I also like the flexability you have when fielding a NL army (as opposed to IW or Khorne). Finally, I like the dark, sinister paint scheme , although I'm not impressed with the "batwing" helmets.
