He had gotten out of Capitol duty. Nobody would understand how much of a relief it was to not have to worry about being in the same vicinity as his mother. Okay, well, there might be one person. A person he had been lacking in visiting lately. Kingston Danes. Since his life had blown up in his face, from asking Minta to marry him, to the birth of his daughter and all the life changes that went with that. He should have found time to see his friend, he knew that. It had been too many months. He couldn't even remember the last time that he had made his way down to the factory, where King spent most of his time. It was his day to watch Azalea, which made things a little more difficult with a squirming almost four month old in his arms, to be secretive, but he had managed. They were lucky apparently, that Aza was such a quiet baby. he didn't know how it could be worse though. Because both he and Minta rarely slept, both arguing over who's turn it was to check on her, and with their jobs, it was hard to remain on the happier side of life.

Putting that into perspective, it seemed a little confusing to him, that if he was sleep deprived, why was he taking his daughter with him? To a person who was probably going to give him enough smart ass comments to fill up an entire ocean. Because, he was a friend. And granted, King probably didn't want baby drool all over his office, but that was too bad for him wasn't it? Because Geoff was entering the building now. Bouncing his daughter a little, to keep her a little happier than her normal. Kay Aza. You gotta be good to uncle King. Or I'm never going to hear the end of it. Either way he was never going to hear the end of it, but at least his kid was too young to know what he was even saying, as she gave him the grin that got him wrapped around her little finger already. Yeah you're so angelic now. Narrowing his eyes at her, he tickled her sides, getting that rather adorable baby giggle out of her. Colleen must have heard it down the hall, because he saw her (in his opinion) grotesque head popped around her desk.

he clutched Aza a little tighter, his gaze really narrowing, like the over protective parent he was already proving to be, and didn't waver from her look. No you may not hold my child. Yes it is mine. He did not like that woman, if she was really human. Maybe she was a robot. That would explain everything. Except the time he had gotten drunk... without supervision. And she somehow ended up in his bed. Yeah, that wasn't the greatest moment of his life, but it was one of many that he regretted... and tried forgetting. Scooting past her desk, he made his way to the door of King's office, and for once, had the decency to knock on it before poking his head around

excuses that deceive
WAS JUST A LITTLE BULLSHIT I SAW THROUGH.
"I know, Colleen. But I'm really not interested." Kingston was having a growing migraine at the woman insisting on putting her in his presence. She should have known by now that he had no interest in her whatsoever anymore. She'd ruined her chance long ago and Kingston was sick of it. "I want you to get another glass of brandy." He had several files on his desk and he was trying to decide which person would be best to send into the Peacekeeper Academy. Not everyone could handle the pressure and if he wasn't concentrating, the one that would go in would fuck everything up and they'd all be dead. Personally, he liked to keep a pulse in his body for as long as possible. There was still work to do and he was trying to get rid of ideas hanging around his mind. Alcohol hadn't sufficed and the only thing that seemed to make sense were the figures set on a spreadsheet pinned to a board not too far and a coffee stain on the lower corner. In all probability, it was unlikely that Kingston had gone home the previous evening and had spent the night studying charts and throwing darts at a map on the back of his office door. He wanted to go home and sleep but that was just as unlikely with knowing what he would do outside these four walls.

Rubbing his face, Kingston watched as Colleen sashayed out the door and he rested his forehead on his arms. Maybe if drinking wouldn't tire him out enough until he'd pass out, actually trying to sleep would work. With his eyes closed, Kingston could feel sleep tugging on his eyelids. As he was about to succumb to unconsciousness, he heard a knock on his door and started. Clearing his throat, Kingston blinked and rubbed his eyes again, "Who is it?" Picking a few scraps of crumpled up paper off his desk to shove them into the trash can next to it, any additional words he would have said stopped short as he saw Geoffrey poke his head in through the door. "You've got to be kidding me." When Geoff had shouldered further into the room carrying a little girl with him, King's eyes narrowed more, "You've got to be fucking kidding me." He repeated. "I don't have time for this."

It was one thing for Geoff to have taken the hiatus Kingston more or less forced on him. It was a completely different thing to totally cut him out of his life with not so much as a note. And now Geoffrey seemed to have the idea in that thick head of his that he could just walk back in from the leave and expect things to be all hunky dory with him. They may have been best friends but Kingston liked to think five minutes to send a note would have been found somewhere in there even if Geoff was going through so many life changes. He was tempted to the point of dragging Geoffrey outside by the collar and throwing him out for multiple reasons - the least of which being the fact that he had a small child with him. Though Kingston didn't like children at all, he had bigger issues such as the fact that Geoffrey had been a big enough dumbass to drag his own child into a place that could get quite a few people killed. It was like feeding the child right to a lion and though he'd known Geoff to do some pretty dumb shit, this had to be among the top five. "What are you doing here, Geoff?" Getting up from his chair, Kingston had walked over to the chart to start pulling the pins out to roll it up and put it in its container. A frown was present on his features but he never had been a ray of sunshine when he was at work.

If there was one thing he hated, it was people presuming something. When one assumed something about somebody, there were a million possibilities that could change the outcome. Because that was what happened when you assumed. Not that Geoffrey himself was innocent of presuming things, because he did it all the time. He assumed people automatically loved him, he assumed he would be listened to, and he assumed his long time friend would be more willing to accept the hiatus that had occurred. Especially since Kingston himself had been part of the reason Geoff had been gone for many months. But as he shouldered his way into King's office, he should have known better. He should have known everything about this day was going to go downhill as soon as he made an appearance. Especially with Aza.

Make fucking time then. King wanted to play hardball? Fine. Geoff had come for a visit. He knew he should have sent a letter, a note, something. And truth be told, he probably had started too... But he had a short attention span, and the note had probably gotten thrown away as soon as he walked away from it. I don't expect you to be smiles Kingston. But could you at least try to be nice? I know it's been awhile... He shut the door behind him, making it clear that he was not going anywhere anytime soon. So what if it was King's office, Geoff was still older, and a peacekeeper. He knew how to make a stand. And ever since he had stood up to his mom, things had been different.

What am I doing here? Well let's see.... I tried writing notes but they somehow kept mysteriously disappearing, and I finally gave up so I came down. Plus I'm sick of sitting at home playing housewife. Or wandering the district looking for rebels.... Oh wait. I found them. He wasn't being nice, that was obvious. He had come with the intentions of being nice enough, but he wasn't going to take this shit. If King wanted him to leave, then he would leave. Because Aza was not doing anything except gumming on her hand, and Geoff was extremely thankful for that.

excuses that deceive
WAS JUST A LITTLE BULLSHIT I SAW THROUGH.
It was comical in King's eyes about Geoff's sassing of him. However, it was only if he'd been in a better mood that he might have laughed along with it. He hadn't seen sleep in probably thirty six hours and having this on top of a deadline fast approaching, it did not make for the best concoction under any circumstance. It'd been a while? "Try about a year. Give or take a month or two." He wasn't expecting Christmas cards or Sunday brunches or having to face Geoff in that time but it was back to that basis of a note thing. He liked to try and give Geoffrey a little bit more credit than the dumbass he knew him to be but Geoff made it incredibly difficult to keep even that amount of faith in him. "I am being nice." Kingston gestured to the mess of an office around him. "Perhaps you've forgotten what it looks like when I'm in the middle of one of my projects." With the poster container under his arm, he moved to grab the coffee mug off his desk and open his door long enough to hand it to the returning Colleen in exchange for the bottle of brandy she'd been quick to retrieve. He'd been alternating between alcohol and caffeine to keep himself going.

Kingston had set the bottle on his desk as he closed some of the files in time to hear Geoff be a smart ass about having found the rebels. Kingston couldn't give two shits if Geoffrey was a Peacekeeper. He was under his roof and he had a few people who could be called in if he got out of sorts. Had it been outside his grounds, Kingston would have had to hold his tongue but not when he was on his turf. This was the one place King held the upper hand and he wasn't going to let Geoff think he could get away with it. "You've brought an innocent child into the line of fire." He'd refrained from making eye contact with Geoff until that point. King had always been one to intend to affect the least amount of innocent persons possible and he liked to think children were innocent of their parent's crimes. In hindsight, Kingston probably would have felt less antagonized if Geoff had showed up without the little runt.

As to having tried to write notes, it was evident he didn't rank anywhere near the top of Geoff's important people list - probably not even the top fifty - if he was forgetting notes after writing them. If Kingston wasn't from a questionable profession, he probably would have tried to make contact with Geoffrey but he liked to think his lack of contact for the past year had possibly cushioned the safety level of Geoff's family. True, it left a lot to Geoff to complete, but King would have thought he'd have some sense of that idea. A part of him doubted that Geoff played housewife that often and King's hands remained splayed on his desk watching the older man with his small daughter. He still didn't know her name but it was probably better that he didn't. If Geoff was trying to go AWOL, he was certainly testing just how far King would go to ensure the safety of countless others. Not to mention if he wanted his leave of absence to become permanent, he need only have asked rather than try to push Kingston's buttons. Kingston was willing to offer people the escape he didn't have the luxury of but it simply required a bit of tact that Geoff obviously lacked.

→ something's gotta go wrong ,

It was going to be a battle of egos. Two highly self-confident men pitted against each other in the same room. Childhood friends, co-workers, brothers. Yet they stood, facing off like wild animals. Everything about this was wrong. And not the way Geoff was wanting this to go. But then, did anything go how he wanted it? Rarely. Once in a blue moon, and for as long as he had been alive.. he had yet to see the moon turn blue. But he knew he was in the wrong, and King was right. But was he going to admit defeat? To show that he knew he was wrong? Probably.

I'm sorry King. I am. No excuses were made, no story brought up. Just the two men and a child. An infant. One of the things King could care less about. But to Geoff, his daughter was something to be cherished. To be loved. And it was only right that his 'brother' meet her. Finally. Months later. Although Minta was partially to blame for that one since she and King got along about as well as cats and dogs. But was his daughter truly innocent as King claimed? For now. I brought my child to meet her uncle. The line of fire was a bunch of baloney. If he hadn't thought she would be safe, she wouldn't have been there. But he was under the impression that she would be safe, and with her father, him, around, there would be no harm intentionally coming her way. Not like she can talk or anything.

Then he made his way to the familiar chair that he claimed as his own and sat down. He looked at King and sighed. I know I'm a horrible friend. But we have always known that. And this damn hiatus has got to end. Until Aza showed signs of comprehending what was going on around her, Geoff felt no need to sensor his words. Or actions. he will regret it later and since she was falling asleep in his arms, bored with trying to gnaw her own hand off, he had no worries. Not even if King stood on top of his desk and started yelling at the top of his lungs.

excuses that deceive
WAS JUST A LITTLE BULLSHIT I SAW THROUGH.
Kingston wasn't intending for this to be a reunion that only ended in arguing but it was point blank about what had happened. He knew it was to be expected but he wouldn't have thought Geoffrey would have apologized for it. "'s okay." He wasn't pressing it further more as it was done and over with. He never had been able to hold a proper grudge unless it was necessary and now that he'd more or less let off his steam, it was dust under the mat and better left untouched. Sure he'd been holding the possible snarky comments in for quite some time but after making his point, they were all useless and he returned to moving the files into the filing cabinet. It wasn't like he'd be getting that work done today anyway with Geoff's sudden reappearance.

His eyes shifted to the small child in Geoffrey's arms at the words of him being the uncle. Thankfully he wasn't blood related because then he'd probably have to pretend he could tolerate being in the same room as her. "It's not that she can talk and you know it." Just because he didn't like children didn't mean he thought they should be punished for their parent's actions. With Geoff having brought her in, it made it his problem because he thought about the future consequences more than some might think. What if some day she was questioned about the Rebellion and because Geoff decided to be a dumbass, she was hurt all because he'd brought her to a place associated with it. The Capitol wasn't above stretching evidence to its preference and he was positive Geoff didn't want her to be hurt because he wasn't thinking straight. So yes, Kingston could have a conscience sometimes and if Geoff had doubted it before, he shouldn't at this point. "I'm honored I'm her uncle." The dry sarcasm was evident enough but she was under the age of eighteen which was the minimum they usually had to be for him to tolerate them.

A smirk quirked on his lips as Geoff mentioned being so tired of having had the slow life for a while. "It made your trail go stale though. In case anyone was watching you." He wasn't that selfish though he came off like it at times. "You haven't been a horrible friend." Geoffrey had simply had his moments that sometimes stretched for long enough periods of time. There had also been his shining moments when he proved he wasn't a total asshole just as King had his moments of being decent. It was bound to happen considering how long either of them had been around. Kingston took a sip of his lukewarm coffee and frowned at the taste. "What makes you say I should terminate your hiatus?" Who knew, was he sure he wanted the person who kept abducting his seat to return? Did Geoff really have things all sorted out? And would Minta get suspicious? Of course she would. It was her soon-to-be husband and he had hold of the daughter who's name he still didn't know. One'd think Geoff at least would have been sending everyone announcements if he'd been so dedicated to worshiping his daughter in baby announcements.

That was the good thing about the friendship the two men shared. They both had those moments of complete asshole-ness, but could get past it. Between the two of them, given a situation, their egos could fill up the whole planet, but it wasn't like that. The relief that Geoff felt when King let the subject drop, and turned to something a little more normal. Well, if the fact that Geoffrey Banks was holding a child that was of his DNA could be called normal. A year and a half ago, he had had no plans of having a family, enjoying his bachelor status and position of most wanted peacekeeper among the ladies. But now that was changed. He was engaged, basically disowned his mother, and had a kid. That in itself was a big enough issue.

And yes, he knew the risks of bringing his infant daughter to this office. The assumptions that it could be made. Hell, even letting Colleen see her on his way in had been bad enough. And if that fiance of his caught wind of what he had been up to... There wasn't enough governmental powers above him to save his soul. But that was besides the point. He had enough trust in the people directly involved with him and King, even Colleen, as loathe as he was to admit it. Oh, and when she finally makes up her mind about when it is, I am hereby asking that you attend my marriage... or death sentence. How ever you want to look at it. Yeah, that was going to tickle his funny bone like no other. Kingston and Minta did not get along. It was like putting a rabid raccoon in a room with a coon dog. Bad things would happen. And here he was setting them up to spend a day together? He should have a certificate declaring him mentally unstable at this rate.

Like I said, I am asking that you be there for me, not her. All you have to do is say congratulations to her, and then you can go about whatever it is you want to do. As he spoke, he took a seat in one of the spare chairs that King kept, for when he was interviewing, or got bombarded by people such as Geoff. Fine. Don't end it. I'll just tell them to go ahead with transfer and let my child and fiance sit here in eight under your watch while I go suffer in misery at the thought of being separate from you and everybody else. He shrugged like it was no big deal, but there had been talk. Talk of moving his district. They thought he was getting too antsy here, but that was because he hadn't been allowed anywhere near King for months now. He had been doing his job well enough, and they thought it was suspicious. They were a bunch of hypocrites, but Geoff really didn't want to move districts. His home was here in eight, and he couldn't stand thinking of trying to fit in anywhere else. Like district three. Yeah, that was where they had been talking about putting him.

excuses that deceive
WAS JUST A LITTLE BULLSHIT I SAW THROUGH.
It wasn't much of a surprise that Geoffrey had been lassoed into the marriage after all and Kingston nodded in hearing the comment. "Just make sure I get an announcement and I'll see what I can do." He didn't have the time to keep track of every day that Minta delayed in deciding on when the wedding for the happy couple was to be. Things were picking up on King's end and though he'd been fairing well without Geoffrey, he was trying to make sure lives weren't lost. As much as he loved Geoff as a brother to want to be there, if he had to choose between his best friend and lives, he would have to assume that Geoff would understand how the sacrifice had to be made. It was what Kingston tended to do anyway. Want to be there to show support but end up flaking out due to a number of reasons from not being wanted by other parties or an important meeting coming up or even as it had been earlier around the little girl's birth that his distance would ensure some level of safety. He knew Geoff was probably expecting a different reaction but Kingston wasn't in the mood to argue and on the rare occasion, he could attempt to rise himself above his norms and deal if only for Geoff's sake.

When Geoffrey took the seat that was actually meant for visitors, Kingston had to sigh and take his own back and sink into the comfort of his favorite chair. His eyes locked on the small child for a moment as Geoff proposed him being shipped off elsewhere for work. "I do have contacts in other places you could meet up with but the last thing I need is Minta knocking on my door every five minutes." She was a demanding woman. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Though his gaze had fallen to his desk in listening, Kingston looked up with a wave of his hand at the girl, "And for fuck's sake, Geoff. I still don't know her name. You just keep saying her unless that's her actual name. If it is, I applaud you for your extreme lack of creativity." He'd seen insects with more creativity than Geoff evidently had. And though Kingston tried to be patient and be subtle with Geoffrey, sometimes the man was so thick it didn't seem to make the connection in his brain that the lapse in a year and a half also meant Kingston had not kept in contact with his mother or learned of any other news from his family.

Kingston's eyes rolled as he took out another form to begin scribbling on it and muttering about the transfer. The man couldn't even tell the obvious things so why he was thinking of signing up to keep him here was probably reason to question King's sanity. He had been working overtime lately so this might be a lapse in judgment. However, it was more likely the fact that Geoff was the Minta animal tamer, not him and that unfortunately made it necessary he stay well within Eight to keep Minta far, far away from King's factory. It didn't even matter that Geoff might be "in misery" in either place so long as Minta was kept on a tight leash and not allowed to poke around his things.

Normally people were able to tell when they were being obnoxious, but if there was one thing Geoff was, it was not normal. In fact, he was far from normal. He had pined after the woman he was going to marry for years. And he had still gone backwards and had the kid first. But he loved azalea and minta now and there was no going back. Of course, he had been annoying king for far longer than that, so he didn't really care what was happening as long as there wasn't a gun Pointed at him.

" yeah I totally named my daughter her. Because it was the easiest to remember." sarcasm was common among the two of them, and Geoff simply rolled his eyes. " if you really want to know- actually, you're going to know anyways- her name is azalea" he felt pretty good about what they had finally settled on for a name because it wasn't too freakishly abnormal but it was still unique enough people would know who she was.

he hadn't known where he was going with the whole changing districts thing, because both men knew he would be doing no such thing. One subject that rarely got talked about was his fiancé, because it just so happened that she was one of the people that rubbed king the wrong way immediately off the bat. Like Colleen had with Geoff. People were just like that sometimes. Plus Geoff would just miss his friend. They were practically brothers, and why would he leave that? Then he would have to trust other people to come and bug the hell out of king like he did, and he wasn't sure if that was ever possible to achieve. "so now that I've been a horrible friend... Anything new?" it was an open ended question because he wasn't the type to specifically ask about anything. Whatever kingston wanted to tell him would float along the river of conversation and life would go on as Geoff continued to placate his squirming daughter and try to hang on to the remaining points of masculinity he had.

excuses that deceive
WAS JUST A LITTLE BULLSHIT I SAW THROUGH.
Kingston's eyes rolled again as Geoff first accepted his suggestion for the girl's name and then rebuked it with the actual. "I knew it." For his taste, the flower name wasn't flying but it wasn't his kid so King wasn't about to complain about it. Although, any name other than something similar to his own would have sounded ridiculous as an option but that also required Kingston having thought of kid names which he'd never bothered with. It was for the better in that sense as he had never particularly enjoyed the company of those under the age of eighteen and thus thinking up names would have been absurd coming from him of all people. Sarcastically, "I think her would have been a better name." While friendly banter was acceptable between the two, Kingston was the more likely to take it a step further and not quite let things go until he'd felt he'd sufficiently squeezed all the amusement out of it much like one would with a lemon when making lemonade. It was mood souring with how he went about it at times but it wasn't like he cared whose feelings he hurt whenever he chose to open his mouth. If they couldn't handle a bit of rudeness now and again, they were definitely working for the wrong man.

He looked up from the desk as if Geoffrey had seriously just asked him if anything was new in his life. Since when did he ask things like that? Clearly he'd been hanging around Minta for far too long that it had docked whatever masculinity Geoff had and flushed it down the drain when it came to asking about feelings. Geoff already knew that Kingston hardly opened up and when he did, he typically had to beat his friend over the head to get him to listen. This direct approach, however, had caught him slightly off guard. "That's an awfully broad question considering it's been ages since I last saw you." It could also be interpreted a number of different ways such as whether Geoff was inquiring after Kingston personally or the Cause. "I've got blueprints of a few buildings that need more inspection and I'm planning to send a few in to scout it out." Kingston had been connecting a few dots on his notepad more focused on it than he should have been. "There's also been discussion of a Capitol pitch coming up involving talking down about us. Apparently we've gotten under their skin enough to have caused a ruckus that must be publicly condemned. I don't know if they have anyone under their hand that they intend to make an example of but I wouldn't put it past them." Personally, he'd be attending the ceremonies of sorts only to cause a nuisance at the end after letting them think they'd had their way rather than go head first into a sea of Peacekeepers who would outnumber their forces five to one at least for a ground attack.

"If you were actually inquiring about my life, Tate's only become more of a prick as time has gone on." It was no secret his brother and he didn't always get along. There were reasons he actually went to Geoff and Tate was one such person who drove his younger brother to seek help elsewhere rather than the family that he cared deeply for but would never properly admit. While more was technically going on Kingston's life such as with the arrival of Cecilia back into it, that was something he would refrain from telling Geoff or else he'd wind up with a never-ending batch of jokes which were only endearing for so long. And when the effects wore off, well, someone would most likely have a bloody nose and it definitely wouldn't be Kingston.

→ something's gotta go wrong ,

Growing up, Geoff had always been an asshole. It didn't help things when his parents were so conflicted in how he was raised that he ended up raising himself. Aside from the times that his father decided to beat sense into him, or his mother wanting to "bond with her baby boy" he had never really had parents. That was part of the reason why he was so keen on sticking around when Minta had told him that she was pregnant. He was not going to be like his dad and disappear into the night after abusing his wife and son. But that was still something that Kingston seemed to be missing out on. And it wasn't even his fault, because he just wasn't the kind of guy to want a family. And in his line of work it was completely understandable. Neither one of them knew what was going to happen on a day to day basis, but at least with Geoff, if anything did happen to him while he was doing ' something noble and brave for the good of Panem' Minta was at least going to be taken care of. With King... it was debatable. The President didn't really look upon open rebellion well.

Maybe it was surprising for Geoff to ask about King. But that was what happened when you spent months around women. It was only slightly degrading, and he was going to need to do something to start feeling like a man again. The first step to this was getting a babysitter... which meant Lemon... to watch Aza so he didn't have to carry her around everywhere. And as he thought about her, it seemed like she was prepared and started squirming, so Geoff sighed and set her on the floor of King's office before leaning back in the chair. "Yeah I think I got some sort of notice about a peacekeeper convention that's mandatory because if we don't show up we're part of the rebellion and will die and all that happy shit."

Rolling his eyes at the thought of having to pretend like he actually liked his job, he glanced over at King. "Your brother has always been a prick. What else is new?" Rhetorical questions were the majority of his conversations it seemed. Maybe. Who knew.
