→ for whom the bell tolls
As a sixteen year old girl there weren't many things that Arielle Mallen looked forward to around this time of year. In a matter of a few weeks the reapings would occur once again and she always had to wonder about the safety of her two brothers, Cadence whom was 18 and River whom just turned 15. Even though the Mallens were a family well known for their legacy of career children and lifestyle Arielle just wished there was some way for her to ensure the safety of the two people that meant the absolute most to her. Without Cadence she felt like she was without her other half because they were so close that they could have and probably should have been twins. And without Rivers growing curiosity about the world and what inhabited it, where would Arielle stand? They each played a strong role in the others lives and upheld an incredibly delicate balance.

For River, he was the one that unknowingly allowed his two older siblings to grasp more parental and protective instincts. Arielle had the unspoken duty to train River and to teach him everything she knew; from training to the simple way of life they lead in district four. She was supposed to make sure that he was out of trouble and continuing down the right path. Whereas Cadence was supposed to be there for the more developmental parts of River's boyhood. He was the one that could be called upon when cracking voices came into play or awkward stages where ones body was still adjusting to a growth spurt. For Cadence, his two siblings kept him on his toes. River was there to learn from his biggest example of how to turn out in life; Cadence was the ultimate role model for him and there was not one moment that passed that the younger sibling didn't keep the other in a state of prime brotherhood. Whereas Arielle was the one that made Cadence act his age. Instead of always going along with the serious attitude the elder boy presented, Arielle poked fun at him and caused him to lighten up during the times they trained. It was a similar predicament when it came to the only female and middle child of the family. River allowed Arielle to keep her childhood and play around with him in whatever world they wanted to create while Cadence had Arielle accept the world as it was and ultimately embrace her training and the seriousness of their life. However, this balance did not include anything on maintaining a love life.

Arielle Nicole Mallen, admittedly, didn't have much in the way of a love life until recently and it had been one she was very hesitant to jump into. Six months ago she didn't really want to date Cole Burton, the nineteen year old peacekeeper-in-training that had challenged her to a fight. At first, it was a bit of a joke to the sixteen year old. There had been plenty of guys that had asked her on dates but they were all met with the same answer, "no thanks". It wasn't that Arielle wasn't interested in some of the boys she had come across, but there was a definite lack of interest in letting someone into her life. The problem, at the root, was that Arielle at sixteen years old was afraid of letting someone completely in. When you were intimate with someone and practically handed yourself over on a silver plate, there was a lot at risk, and until six months ago Arielle had never had to do such a thing. The most common interaction with boys she had was when she kept up a flirtatious and sporty attitude on the training grounds where Arielle would be underestimated and then beat the daylights out of what could have been a potential suitor. Up until Cole had come this far into her life, her system had been flawlessly working, but all good things come to an end sometime.

At first, things started with a swift punch to the jaw. It may not have been romantic...in the slightest, but Cole had challenged her to a fight and it wasn't one that Arielle was going to turn down. It was probably her families trademark cocky attitude that made her believe that it was a big deal for a peacekeeper (even one in training) to feel the need to challenge her of all people in the district, and there was no way to deny that she didn't want to beat the snot out of one just to gloat that she did. So naturally, once he started stripping his uniform off and insults were thrown around Arielle went in for the kill and socked him. But then something happened that Arielle didn't necessarily expect. He wouldn't leave her alone. Time after time he would ask her on a date and time and time again she would tell him no. It got to the point where she was seeing him so much that it was like a game, a guilty pleasure, and finally after three months of asking she went out with him. But Cole, as it seemed was full of surprises because no matter what it always felt like he knew just want to do. He took her on the water at sunset all the way to sunrise, her favorite time of the day. He knew what flowers she loved without asking or the places she went for food after training all morning with Cadence. It was hard for Arielle to let someone into her life and be a part of the things she did, especially a peacekeeper paired next to her rebellious attitude, but it was hard not to want to be around Cole. And now, six months later she felt like she was really falling for him. But that wasn't the kind of thing Arielle was prepared to admit, not yet. Love was a scary prospect and she didn't want to become another victim of young and confused love. But she felt the beginnings of it, undoubtedly so.

Giving Cole's hand a squeeze while she coaxed him forward and a genuine smile crossed her features. So far their date at the Harvest Festival had been damn near perfect; and perfect was not a term Arielle used often. But they had been having an amazing time. Her feet stopped moving after she pivoted in front of him, both of her hands lifting his and lacing her fingers with his effortlessly, "Soooo, it's been a few hours now, and theres a few hours left, but I think while everythings still lit up we should go on the ferris wheel" she told him happily. However, for as much as Cole knew about Arielle it was apparent from her carefree attitude that she did not know one of his greatest fears. "I go on it every year, and you know I have to get back to my dad before all the clocks start simultaneously freaking out marking the end of the festival," she started while closing the gap between their bodies and looking up at him with her green eyes, "so what do you say?" she asked softly before playfully flipping the tip of his nose with her own.

Once upon a time, we burned bright...
Cole was love struck, but he wasn't in the least bit resistant to the feelings that swelled inside of him. She held his heart and every moment they spent together only magnified and intensified his love for her. Maybe it was the thrill of the first, but for Cole... It was so much more than a simple thrill. She was brighter than the afternoon sun. She was as untamed as the ocean. She was as sweet as the nectar from honey suckles that grew wild near the electrified fences. She was slowly becoming his everything and it was exciting and scary, but it was a rush that he never wanted to lose. She brought out a side of him that he had thought long forgotten and abandoned. she was bring out the kid in his heart, but simultaneously bringing out the man he was destined to be... for her.

Most called it a young lover's romance, but Cole felt that they were connected. He knew deep down that what he felt for Arielle was immensely stronger than any puppy love, yet he kept his passion tamed. She was innocent and pure, which only caused him to be wildly more turned on when she lightly touched his skin. The faintest grazing of her lips on his neck was enough to send him gasping for air and moaning for more. She had him wrapped securely around her petite left ring finger.

All this was only after six months of being with her, so Cole couldn't imagine what the future would hold. He knew that their future would be forever intertwined, yet he felt like it was meant for so much more than they were granted. Sneaking around behind the backs of her parents and his higher ups, but each moment...each kiss...each touch was worth the danger that was brought with them. He had grown ballsy enough to introduce himself to Arielle's brothers, River and Cadence. Both gave him dirty sneers and spoke of castrating him if he dared touch Arielle inappropriately; however, River more innocently and quickly took a liking to Cole when Cadence wasn't around.

Cole practically bent over backwards to stay with Arielle. Finding any reason to see her, which usually was in secret. He spoiled Arielle relentlessly to prove that she was meant for him, even if she didn't quite know it yet. Cole did everything that he could to prove that point and he practically knew everything about Arielle. All the good, bad, and frightening. He saw past her cocky, showboaty career exterior to see that she a perfect girl on the inside. He chipped away at her defensive wall by showering her with affection and surprising her day after day. Every date was timed and planned to the very last 't' just to prove how much he truly cared. He couldn't help himself around her, so he worked a thousand times harder to get her to realize what he knew from the very beginning.

It all lead up to the Harvest Festival, in which he practically had her for the entire time. Their hands clasped together without any reason of breaking apart. His lips in a perfect smile that only Arielle could force on his lips. When she squeezed his hand, his eyes grew soft as he looked upon her . He stopped as she stopped as if he knew her motives. Call it lover's instinct. His eyes, still soft, looked into her's as the smile grew wider. He loved the way that their hands seemed to fit perfectly together. Her voice filled his ears as he listened intently to her words. Everything was perfect... Until she said "...ferris wheel." He immediately felt himself gulp down the lump and his palms started to sweat, yet he maintained a nervous smile. She continued to speak, but her words fell on deaf ears. He couldn't go on a ferris wheel-- Her nose playfully tipped against his and he lost all fear. He leaned down and placed a kiss on her lips. "Lead the way." he stated as he stole another kiss before releasing hold with one and twirling her around. A sly smile formed on his lips as he gave her booty a playful pinch.

"Cole speaking..."
