What I want to be when I leave school

An essay by Jordan Garnette (aged 12)

What do I want to be when I grow up? That's a stupid question. The answer's obvious, when I'm older going to be a Career and be victor of a Hunger Games.

The real question this essay should be answering is why am I writing pointless pages of utter shit when I could be using this time to train?

Screw this. The end.

GRADE F Mr and Mrs Garnette, I am sorry to inform you that Jordan's current attitude to her work is appalling. Jordan is a intelligent young girl however her grades and overall attitude so not do her any favors. she appears to have an obsession with being a tribute in the Games, although here we do encourage students to take pride in the games and inspire future victors, we believe Jordan's infatuation will restrict her ability to be a acceptable citizen of district One in the future as you know not all of our students will have the opportunity to participate in the Games.

Meet Jordan Garnette as you can probably tell she isn't the most friendly and polite person in the world. In fact she is a highly aggressive and hot-tempered character. As a consequence of that she has no friends as nobody wants to be around such a hostile person.

Jordan is also a very lonely character- not only because she has no friends but because she feels like she doesn't belong in her district. District One's industry is focused on appearances and looking good, but Jordan couldn't give a damn about how she dresses and thinks it is too superficial. She would rather die in the arena than make superficial products for superficial people. Her mother, who works as a "nose" in a perfume factory is her exact opposite. As she is an only child, her mother's appearance obsession is focused on her, she always wants to fuss about Jordan's frequently messy hair and scruffy sports clothes that lack any kind of style or sophistication. This is one of her pet hates so around her mother she is more snappy than usual.

Determination is one trait that Jordan admires in an individual as she possess a lot herself, especially in training for the Games. She spends most of her free time practicing with her katana or revising survival skills she learnt at the training center. Jordan wants to volunteer at the next Hunger Games as she wants to win as soon as possible to get away from her current life which she hates so much . Her parents want her to volunteer at the age of 18 which is a tradition in the Garnette but as Jordan has a slight rebellious streak she is not going to delay her dream for a , in her opinion, pathetic family tradition.

Jordan hates her surname, Garnette. She detests how girly and pretentious it sounds and frequently crosses it out on her work at school. Her first name was originally Jordannie, a name her mother made up from the names Jordan and Annie but Jordan refused to be called such a stupid name so her parents reluctantly changed her name to Jordan.

Everyone's eyes were on her. Jordan was surprised how confident she actually felt, well why shouldn't she feel this way when she had trained so for so long? The bright overhead lights bounced off the cold metal of her katana. She smiled; seeing it shine this way reminded her of the evil glint she often found in her own eyes when she glanced at her own reflection.

The time was now. With swift swing of the sword, the head of the unfortunate dummy was knocked onto the floor and rolled towards the crowd of other students who she had just appeared to have impressed. But she wasn't going to stop there, she now began to hack the defenseless mannequin to pieces. Jordan could almost imagine the reactions of her fellow Careers, they knew she was short-tempered and rebellious at school but they had no idea how well she could handle this weapon.

With her head held high, she made her way from the platform. Stifling the smirk that was about to make it's way to her lips. She had just passed the test.

hey hayley! so i think you've got a really good start on jordan, i really do! i love the essay intro and i thought it was very creative and very cool! the main things i'm struggling with in her application is what's really causing her to feel... so strongly and so determined. is there anything in particular about the hunger games or the capitol that is causing these strong emotions to form? maybe something in her past? or maybe she's just generally pretty crazy, lol. if that's the case, i think i'd like to see something from someone else's point of view in her app. how do they react to her? you mention her not having friends, is that one sided? meaning, do people avoid her all together? or does she just tend to push people away despite the fact that they try to be her friend? also, i notice in the essay portion that jordan mentions she would rather be training. while i feel that this statement is a great indicator of her personality and her goals in life, i also think it would be very risky for her to admit this so strongly to a teacher. training is in fact illegal and while most people know it's going on, i'm not sure i can see someone randomly running around town announcing that they're going training. so if her teacher knows about all of this, maybe you could include something there! does she tend to have a close relationship with authority figures? does she enjoy school? or maybe she's the opposite, in which case i think it may have been more likely for her teacher to freak out a bit and maybe even consider turning her into the peacekeepers? i think i'd just like to see a bit of elaboration on all of these points so that i can help get a clearer picture of who jordan is before accepting her ;) feel free to let me know if you have any questions whatsoever!
