Well, it seems to me that since Nihilum has spread throughout worlds, that perhaps a planet tried to make a shelter from it. That, in turn, created the world we know as Nexus, which could be a nickname for the project.

I believe that Nexus itself is a bit like the Noah's Arc of the universe. It goes through space, picking up anything that isn't infected with the disease so that it may prosper. That would explain the abnormal animals, such as the oversized frogs and the birds. It also doesn't seem to be bound by a set time because it is able to pull things from different time periods. Also, perhaps the metal hatches lead down into the inner workings of the shelter, maybe even rich with technology and the origin of the Nexus.

In conclusion: Blue, it's cruel of you to put up so little and create so many questions.

I'm going to go for something completely opposite and say that Nexus is a giant computer which will save humanity by preserving their brain data so they can live on without their bodies. We're just beta testing.

And actually yes...no one knows why but the Nihilum kills all life and energy eventually, including stars and the scientists in this galaxy believe that this is one of the last galaxy's left after the disease nom-nomed the rest. 8C

If DAU is the key, perhaps they were created by the Nexus to perform a task of high importance, i.e. sealing off Nexus from nihilum or something like that. OR they could be the key to destruction, and continue the spread of the disease!

I think DAU is part of Nexus Origin, born of it possibly and is taking people from various times and places and saving them from death or any other harm. That's why some that should have died appear here or some that just go to sleep appear. 'She''s saving part of the human race (and some Lions who happen to turn into human ) But there are glitches so that's why people may have the ability to turn into animals later on....
