In the Spring of 2008, Worthington Labs had a breakthrough -- they found a way to suppress the Mutated X-gene and they believed they could do it permanently. The 'Cure' to the Mutant 'Problem,' as it became known, was issued on a voluntary basis. The vaccine proved effective, reducing mutants back to a baseline human state. Controversy sparked and mutants became divided; some saw this as their opportunity to mainstream and live normal lives -- to be able to enjoy comforts and luxuries long denied to them. Others saw it as an insult and an abomination.
Not long after the introduction of the vaccine it came to light that while effective it was not as permanent as first thought. The suppressor gradually fades and, without routine vaccinations, mutant abilities will re-manifest. Worthington Labs continued to issue the Cure voluntarily, making regular appointments with the vaccinated to keep their abilities in check.
In early 2011, STOR Pharmaceuticals bought the rights and patents from Worthington Labs and took over production of the vaccine. In November 2011, after the riotous response to the implementation of The Mutant Registration Act, the US Government authorized the weaponizing of The Cure to be used as a means to detain and temporarily neutralize 'terroristic' mutants. STOR has research in development for a permanent Cure.
Potential Side Effects: Dizziness, Nausea, Lethargy, Seizures. Most individuals do not experience side-effects. Instantaneously suppressed the X-Gene, eliminating mutant abilities.
Dosage: Short Term: 1 inoculation, immediate temporary effect. Long Term: 1 weekly inoculation, it is not recommended to miss treatment.
Recommended Delivery: Intramuscular injection to the brachial region (upper arm). Any intramuscular method will suffice -- effective as a dart projectile in emergency situations.
Regulation: Controlled Substance. FDA Approved. Available to the general public.
Cost and Distribution: Free. Government funded supplies are available at STOR and Worthington Labs clinics. Appointments are recommended but walk-ins are accepted.
How it Works: Temporarily suppressed and inhibits the X-Gene responsible for mutant manifestations. It does not alter the genetic code, but simply informs gene regulators to "turn off" expression for the X-Gene. While it is still apart of the genetic code, it becomes a dormant inactive trait and the individual will adapt a 'normal' baseline human physical appearance and range of abilities. The X-Gene can still be inherited by offspring of parents taking The Cure. Effects are temporary and usually fade within a week of administering unless the vaccine is taken or distributed regularly. Effects of the inoculation are instantaneous.
