Scientist Adam Kane was Chief Bio-Geneticist at the company Genomex. He performed experiments in order to save the lives of those who suffered from deadly diseases, but in some test subjects their genes mutated and they developed superhuman abilities. Not long after, Adam left Genomex and built himself a Sanctuary which is a hollowed out cave which is inside a mountain, which is kept hidden using a force field.

Then, he began his search for team members. his first recruit was a young woman named Lexa Pierce. He gave her a comlink and the two discussed what the team would be doing but she refused stating she wasn't the joining type. He let her keep her comlink and she chose to work for Genomex instead in order to save her twin brother Leo's life.

Adam then began looking for a feral. He found two-Shalimar Fox and Nikki Rogers. The two lived inside Sanctuary for nearly a year before he chose Shalimar to join Mutant X over Nikki. He then found her temperary foster parents.

Adam then found a wealthy young man named Jesse Kilmartin, who had left home due to his feeling different from those around him due to his new mutantcy. It didn't take much convincing for Jesse to join the team.

With two members set, Adam then went to work looking for the last two. Fortunately for him, one night a Telempath Psionic named Emma delauro was being chased down town by several GSA and he sent both Jesse and Shalimar to go and get her.

Emma didn't make it easy for them and it resulted in her new friend and fellow mutant Brennan Mulwray getting captured by the GSA. She used her new mutant abilities to track down where her new friend was and the team went in and rescued him.At the time a lot of others also had been captured and Brennan had refused to work for the GSA. He wound up also joining Mutant X and that completed the team for the next two years.

They managed to temperarily defeat Mason Eckhart and also defeat patient zero Gabriel Ashlocke.

After the death of Emma, the team barely had time to mourn due to the arrival of Lexa Pierce who used her name as the code to gain access to one of Adam's files.
