Bones found in Gulfport human, not animal

GULFPORT -- Examination of bones found in Gulfport on Thursday indicate they are human remains, not animal remains as first suspected, Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said this afternoon.

The remains are those of a man who was about 6 feet tall and 35 to 55 years old, Hargrove said.

They were found at 1:16 p.m. Thursday by a man walking his dogs at 13th Avenue and 32nd Street.


Dr. Paul McGarry, forensic pathologist returned to the scene today and will conduct a more thorough examination, Hargrove said.

GULFPORT -- Examination of bones found near woods off 13th Avenue on Wednesday afternoon has determined they are the remains of a man who was 6 feet tall and 35 to 55 years old, Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Thursday.

Authorities at first believed the bones were probably animal remains, but Hargrove said further examination has confirmed they are human remains.

The bones were found south of the intersection of 13th Avenue and 32nd Street by a man who was walking his dogs.


The coroner’s office and Gulfport police were notified at 1:16 p.m.

Hargrove said several bones were collected for further examination by Dr. Paul McGarry, the forensic pathologist who performs South Mississippi’s autopsies.

McGarry met police and members of the coroner’s office at the scene Thursday to recover additional remains and any possible evidence, Hargrove said.

McGarry will conduct a more-thorough investigation, which could give investigators a better idea of the time and possible cause of death, Hargrove said.

Unexplained deaths are typically investigated as homicides until investigators rule out foul play
