Cora's first day at Manfried couldn't have come any sooner. Maybe she should have moved out to Ohio a while before. It didn't matter that Cora had been apart from her sisters for years now. They were big girls and could handle themselves. She was stil protective, but from a distance. Cora had her own life, but when she had heard about the sorts of things happening at Manfried, she knew she had to go. Kate was getting herself into something she didn't like, and normally, Cora would have let her sister learn from experience. Not today. Not when what she was doing was rubbing Cora in just the wrong way.
The seconds she had stepped into Manfried, she knew it was different from the other prisons she had worked at. Then again, those ones hadn't been so rampant with corruption and deceit. Not like Manfried. Cora knew it would be a challenge for her to work there. She wasn't about to let the COs who had been there for a while pressure her into their little group. It wasn't going to happen. There was also the fact that one of her little sisters was the warden there, and was deep in it. Cora felt she had taken good care of her sisters when they were younger, and now she was disappointed in the path Kate had chosen. If anyone was going to set Kate straight, it would be her.
Coraline arrived around 8:10, since she was meeting Kate at 8:15. She walked inside, and soon, she had gotten up to her sister's office. She hadn't expected to be given preferential treatment, but she had expected more than a minute shred of respect toward her. The assistant warden had simply inclined her head toward the door to Kate's office, and now she understood what Kate had said about Tori. She wasn't scared.
Coraline rolled her eyes as the two women exchanged words, looks, and actions. This wasn't going to be any sort of picnic, that was sure. So, she stood there, while her younger sister did...whatever. It wasn't long before Kate finally turned her attention back to Cora, and Cora smiled at the sight of her baby sister. "Hey darlin'," she said, wrapping her arms around Kate and embracing her tightly. "Yeah, well, I figured you might need me here. Besides, I figure I've been away from you two long enough." It was a little saddening that Marti couldn't be there, but then again, she knew her well. Marti wouldn't set a toe in Manfried unless she absolutely had to, and even then, it would be difficult.
Cora took the glass of Whiskey from her sister and promptly downed it after her sister's toast, not being a stranger to alcohol one bit. The liquid courage seared her throat, but it gave her a sense of clarity as she stood in her sister's office. "Together again for sure," she said, smiling. "I dunno. Guess I liked being out in Cali. But, I've been gone long enough. Besides, someone has to watch out for your ass, ya know?" Cora knew that her last remark had the potential to spark something, but she was being honest. She had come out to Stepford Falls to make sure her sister didn't end up a dead woman.

While Kate was happy to see her older sister she also knew with her arrival in town she'd be under tense scrutiny. Her actions upon her rising in the ranks of the VV organization weren't something most women would be proud of. Cora certainly wouldn't have been, of that Kate was certain. Cora carried herself quite differently than she did. Both women were confident but Kate overstepped that into down right conceit. No one was above her but beneath the toe of her shoe, perhaps the same could be said about Cora as well. It had been years since these two women were in the same state together much less the same space, and a smallish space at that.
Kate's office was elaborate with a thick carpeting under their feet, fine Italian leather sofa situated off in the right corner that she and Eric christened every chance they got, not to mention her desktop. Shrugging that line of thinking to the back burner her attention refocused on that of her older sister, Cora. Sparks were going to fly between these two women, always had and always will. Many times Kate felt that Cora spoke down to her condescendingly and of course that never sat right with Kate but got under her skin.
Cora wasn't far off the mark in saying she was needed here. Though for what reasons they'd disagree. Kate had a plan forming in the back of her mind, the seed planted long before she'd contacted her sister about relocating and coming home to reunite their family. Marti was a lost cause and a disappointment to the Lawrence family, not so the case with Cora. She had great potential, she just didn't realize it. With glasses filled she made sure to give Cora a wide berth in the office they now stood in.
Her eyes swept inquisitively over her sister and she gave a bit of an inclination of her head as if in approval of what she saw. Cora hadn't changed a lot over the years, yes there were signs of aging but she was still as lovely as she'd always been, something else that got under Kate's skin. She was often times mistaken for her older sister. "Of course you're needed here. Marti needs you, that hasn't changed. She's been through a lot of shit, but she's still hanging in there." Kate was unable to hide the disappointment that Marti had yet to be broken but she'd not give up until the task was completed and Marti nothing but a distance memory.
Kate drained her glass as did Cora and being the gracious host she was she made short work of refilling both of their glasses. She sipped hers for several moments, listening to Cora. After drinking her fill for the time being she added her two cents worth, in clipped tones of course. "From where I'm standing I seem to be doing just fine without you watching my ass. Need I remind you I'm Warden here Cora?" Kate laughed to lighten the mood then she motioned towards the couch in the corner. Sitting down upon it she quirked a brow at her sister. "Where are you staying? Hotel? I've got plenty of room at home if you're interested? I'd hate to think of you shacked up in a hotel."

Cora knew what sort of person Kate was, and she had an idea of the person her sister had turned into. She was different from her sister, and she knew that well. Cora was confident, whereas Kate could be downright selfish. Cora didn't consider herself superior above all others, but Kate certainly did. If there was one thing Cora planned on teaching her sister while she was at Manfried, it was that she couldn't crush everyone under her shoe...not even her. It didn't matter that they lived in the same town and worked at the same prison. It didn't even matter that Kate was her boss. Cora was determined to make sure that Kate understood her true place, which was certainly not above her. After all, she was older.
"I know Marti needs me. I was talking about you, sweetcheeks." As much as Kate didn't want to admit it, Cora was confidence that both of her younger sisters needed her in Stepford Falls. They had been close for the longest time, but now, relationships were strained, and slowly becoming non-existent. They were family, and they needed to stick together, even if one of the trio members didn't think so. "Well, why don't you fill me in on what's going on with her? Marti hasn't been talking to me lately, and we both know that's odd." Had something happened between Kate and Marti that Cora didn't know about? Cora wouldn't have been surprised one bit.
Cora held out her empty glass toward Kate to be refilled, and once it was, she took a smaller drink of it, savoring the taste. Of course, Kate retorted, which made Cora chuckle. "I know you're Warden, but you've always needed me at some point. What's different about this time?" Cora followed her sister to the nearby couch and sat down next to her, taking yet another sip. I'm in a hotel right now, but I'm gonna be looking at an apartment tomorrow afternoon. If I don't like it, I'll let you know." She then set her glass down nearby and turned toward her sister. "Kate, don't play games with me. I heard about the shit going on here all the way out in California. Something's going on here." Cora wanted to know just what sort of hole Kate had dug for herself.

Kate had changed quite a bit since the last time she'd spent any great deal of time with Cora. Life had changed her and while some might say for the worst Kate didn't see it that way. She had unlimited wealth and power at her fingertips. Men would have killed to be in the same position as she and Kate had no plans of turning her back on her position, not even for her family. She loved them but it paled in comparison to her love of wealth and power, it had all gone to her head. Kate had no qualms of using her position of authority against her sister. Kate hadn't asked Cora to come home to play big sister. She'd missed her, that's why she'd asked that she reunite their family here in Stepford Falls. Kate wasn't going to change and no amount of wanting her to was going to make that happen.
She knew exactly what Cora had meant. It was a fight that Kate was trying to avoid. She bristled at her sister's tone, and Kate being Kate had taken her tone as one of condescension, whether or not it was meant to be delivered that way. She smirked at Cora and blew out a breath, scoffed a bit at her. "I do need you here. To keep this family together, I don't need a babysitter, I haven't in quite some time. Still, it's good you're home." She added on at the end, not wanting Cora to mistake her and think she'd changed her mind about bringing their family back together. "Marti has been through a lot. She was attacked some time back. Since then she'd met someone, she's shacked up with the ferryman. His name is Guy and well....I'm not sure he's right for her."
A seed of doubt planted to tear apart Marti and the little bit of happiness she'd finally found. Kate had no feelings of guilt whatsoever when it came to undermining Marti, even when it came to her older sister Cora. "Marti will be fine, especially now you're home." Kate refilled both of their glasses and sipped at her own while watching Cora like a hawk over the rim of her glass. "I do need you, that hasn't changed. What I need is a partner, of sorts, not a caretaker. I worked very hard to get to where I'm at. I didn't you here because I needed you to be here but because I wanted you to be."
Kate sipped more from her glass as she leveled a steady gaze on Cora. "My door is always open to you and before you start worrying you've got no reason to. I know what I'm doing. I do what needs to be done. I've been given the job of running this prison and that's what I've been doing. Your being here isn't going to change that. Let's just get down to it yes? What is it you're worried about? What have you heard....all the way out in California?" she asked, quirking her brow at Cora.

Cora hadn't seen her sister in a long time, and since then, there were changes that she was beginning to notice more and more. For one, Kate seemed to carry herself differently. There were a few other things that were different about her, and Cora knew she would understand them better over time. She needed to spend as much time as she could getting to know her sister again, if she was going to help her. Cora firmly believed that her little sister needed some help. The sort of things she had been hearing while out in California were enough to worry her. At first, she had dismissed them, thinking that it was nonsense, since stuff such as that tended to happen in prisons. The more she heard, the more sickening it seemed. The final straw was when she found out that it was Kate who was overseeing the prison, and that was when Cora decided she needed to move out there. She had been away from her sisters long enough.
"I didn't come here to be a babysitter, trust me. I've still got my own ass to take care of." Though the circumstances relating to Marti were different, in Cora's mind, both of her little sisters needed some help. She had actually spoken to Marti a couple of weeks prior to her cross-country move, but she hadn't gotten the chance to see Marti by then. Cora knew her youngest sister was seeing the guy who ran the ferry to and from Manfried. He seemed like a good guy, but until Cora got to know him a little more, she wasn't going to trust him. She also knew that Kate had expressed her disapproval of the relationship. Cora knew it had been Kate who was responsible for the attacks on Marti, and now, they avoided each other like the plague. Cora knew her youngest sister was scared of Eric Gallows, someone Cora had yet to meet. Cora wanted Marti to be as happy as possible, and she was willing to do anything to ensure that.
"Yeah, I know about Guy. Can't say I like or dislike him yet. You know me. I've gotta get to know the guy," Cora said with a smile, taking a sip of the drink in her hand. "And why do you not think he's right for her?" Cora almost wanted to scoff. Kate didn't think she needed a caretaker? With the crap she was getting herself into, she needed someone to make sure she still had a head at the end of the day. "I'm here because I care about my sister. We both know I could've stayed out in Cali, but I didn't. Be grateful I'm here." She then took another sip of her drink.
Cora set her glass down and looked straight into Kate's eyes. "Honestly? Out where I was workin', everyone knew Manfried was pure hell and then some. I know about the VV, and I know about the abuse that happens here. Kate...it's fucking disgusting and disgraceful, and you damn well know it. What the hell happened to you while I was gone?"

One thing Kate didn't want now and didn't want or need as a child was a sitter which was exactly what Cora came off as at times. It wasn't like Cora went out of her way to be her sitter but Kate admittedly had acted out growing up and even now her actions in and around Manfried could be considered acting out. However Kate wasn't going to change her ways. She liked who she was just fine and saw nothing wrong with what she was doing. Kate had changed years ago. She'd once worked hard for the FBI to bring down such organizations as the VV. It was going undercover to expose them that she got an up close and personal look at how such an organization could benefit her. Of course then she'd met Eric and everything had fallen into place for her. She had the love of a damned good man, the best and she had money, power and resources at her disposal. Deep down she felt that Cora was jealous of what she had.
And there it was, given point blankly just as Cora always spoke. No bones about it when it came to her older sister. "Is that so?" she asked brusquely, her tone not the least bit amused. Over the rim of her glass as she sipped leisurely at her liquor she watched Cora like a hawk eyeing off it's prey. It dawned her on as she stared at her sister just now much they resembled one another when it came to appearances. "And what exactly is your ass up to lately? Enlighten me, please." However she looked nothing like her younger sister Marti and had often times sworn to anyone who'd listen that Marti had been adopted. Marti wasn't adopted but Kate had always felt as if she were, not the case when it came to Cora and Marti. Last she'd heard from Marti was that she and Cora had kept in touch.
God knows Marti was doing what she always did when it came to their oldest sister, singing her fucking praises, and it sickened Kate to such an extent that it made her see red. Marti brought everything that had happened to her on herself, no one to blame but Marti. Like Kate, Cora continually sipped at her drink. Kate sank down on the couch along the side of the room and motioned for her sister to take a seat wherever she'd be comfortable sitting. "That man fills her head with utter fucking nonsense. She thinks she'd invincible and she isn't. She's been through a lot, he doesn't allow her to move past it. I think he expected her to just get over it, pretend it never happened and move on, let's play happy family. I think he's bad news. And if you're smart you'll check him out yourself since you care so much about Marti."
There was a hint of jealousy in her tone that could not be masked no matter how much Kate tried to mask it. Cora looked her in the eyes pinning her down with a look. Kate didn't back down one inch and stared right back into the eyes of her sister, waiting to hear what Cora had heard out in California. "Nothing happened while you were gone. Fucking relax before you give yourself a nose bleed. I run this prison like a well oiled machine. No one has escaped, they'd be fools to even try. I'm doing my god damn job. What have you done Cora?" No one but no one questioned Kate, not even family.

Cora didn't think she came off as a "sitter" of sorts. She just cared enough about people to call them out on their crap. And usually, when she did, they listened to her. They needed to hear it from the perspective of someone else. However...her sister was a different sort of case altogether. She had been working with the FBI, something Cora was very proud of her for. So then, why had she quit? Cora had never understood her sister's decision then, and she didn't understand it now. Maybe things had changed when she met that Eric guy. Cora had never gotten the best vibe from him, and she had never been face to face with the man. He had just sounded...odd. The idea of him with Kate had never sat well with Cora, but she had never voiced her disapproval of him. What good would it do? Cora and Kate were in separate states at that point, doing different things with their lives. Kate had to learn through experience. Now that they weren't...Cora had different ideas.
"Yeah, it is," she quickly replied. She had always spoke bluntly, even as a teenager. It was just a trait of hers that she would never be able to shake off completely. Cora downed the rest of her drink before setting it on a nearby table, indicating she didn't want anymore. She had never been one to be intoxicated while on the job. She had sat down with her former boss and had a couple of drinks before, but she had never gone beyond that. She was with her sister this time, but that didn't mean she was going to drink more. She hoped Kate would do the same. They were bound to get into another argument, and there was no sense in that argument being influenced by alcohol.
"I was offered an assistant warden position out there, Kate. I gave it up to come out here and be with you. Is that such a big problem?" Cora had been offered the position at the prison she had previous worked at, but because she had heard things about Kate from a fellow CO, she had decided she was more needed in Manfried. She had also wanted to be closer to Marti, who seemed to be doing better than she had previously been.
Cora sat down next to her sister, though she had the feeling that an argument would soon develop. Kate and Cora weren't quite like oil and water, but there were many times when they just couldn't seem to agree anymore. Many things between them had changed over the years, and they had grown apart a bit. "I guess one of the locak judges as a sister who worked at the same prison I did. The COs here actually abuse inmates. What got me was the branding and raping that goes on here. You're supposed to keep the inmates safe, not let them be demoralized like this. And trust me, I know about the VV. You shouldn't be involved with stuff like that. It's wrong, and you damn well know it is. Yeah, the inmates won't try to leave, but their safety shouldn't be compromised." Yeah, Cora was calling her sister out, but someone needed to.

No doubt Cora had many questions to ask of her and Kate simply was not in the mood to field them. She had enough on her plate seeing to the everyday runnings of Manfried and planning her and Eric’s wedding. She’d done very little in the wedding planning department but it was never far from her mind. Their wedding would be perfect, Kate would accept no less than perfection on her and Eric’s wedding day. Having Cora home was both a positive and a negative. Her older sister would be available to stand up for her as her Matron of Honor at the wedding but on a negative she’d be harping at her incessantly. Cora did it out of the goodness of her heart, her love for her sister but it at time grated on Kate’s last nerve. Today was one of those days where Cora was rubbing her the wrong way and Kate was convinced that the oldest Lawrence woman did so intentionally for no other reason than to get a rise out of her and a rise out of her it would undoubtedly get. Hence the hitting the booze early.
There wasn’t a whole lot of fight in Cora and her softly uttered ‘yeah, it is’ made Kate want to shake her, confront her and force the older woman into an old fashioned sisterly face off. Admittedly Kate missed them as much as she’d missed her sister. Kate smirked at Cora and lifted her half drained glass of booze in silent salute to her sister, then she drained what was left in her glass, staring down intently at the empty bottom of her glass. Cora followed suit and sat her glass aside when she was done with it. Not Kate. She’d refilled hers and now sat next to her sister on the couch she and Eric christened several times a day.
Kate was floored to hear that Cora had turned down such a position for her. It was a personal sacrifice that Cora had made for her. And now Kate felt she owed her her thanks and didn’t that just piss her off. "That’s not a big problem, no. But you didn’t have to do that for me. You could have told me and I wouldn’t have rode your ass so hard to come home. If I’d known," she stressed, eyeing Cora over the top of her refilled glass. Kate wasted little time draining that one then she sat her glass aside as Cora had moments before.
As expected Cora began her spiel on Kate’s treatment of the inmates at Manfried. Of course Kate didn’t see eye to eye with her sister when it came to inmates and had no qualms whatsoever in enlightening her to that fact. "They’re little more than animals. They rape, kill, molest. They’re the dregs of society, Cora." Cora was dead wrong, Kate didn’t see a damn thing wrong with what went on inside Manfried if anything she encouraged it. "It’s people like this that hurt Marti. Would you have them treated better than she was treated? I don’t think so." Had Marti told Cora that she’d been the one behind the attacks on their younger sister? Kate hoped for Marti sake she hadn’t. "Keep the safe? Cora, love. Are you listening to yourself? These are criminals, the worst of the worst, what would you have me to? Bake them a cake and celebrate their crimes?"

Coraline had given up quite a bit to move across the country, and she was hoping that the long-term benefits would be worth her choice. She had wanted to take the position of assistant warden at California Correctional Institute, located in Tehachapi. It was one of the bigger prisons in California, the place Cora had been working at for most of her career as a correctional officer. She had risen up in their ranks, and many people--both inmates and COs alike--had come to respect her. She had chosen to start back down at the bottom for her sister, because she believed that her family was more important than her job. She didn't care if she rubbed anyone the wrong way, and she didn't care if they were pissed off at her for some stupid reason. She stood by her decisions, and she stood by her words. It didn't matter to her that her sister was the warden at Manfried. She was there for her family. Her job would come second to that.
There was plenty of fight still left in Cora. She wasn't the type to back down without a damn good reason, something Kate should have known. Cora just missed her family. She was a family-oriented sort of person, and most of them had made the move to Stepford Falls. Cora had been one of the few to stay behind, and over time, her life had gotten too quiet. She had friends she would go out with every Friday night, but when the night was over, her friends returned to their boyfriends or husbands. Cora simply returned home to her apartment, with herself being the only resident within it. The only other things she lived with were her fish, in their large tank. Cora's love life was basically nonexistent. Maybe it was because she was a dominant personality, or maybe it was because she was too commitment-oriented for a lot of men.
"No, I did. I needed to be out here with you and the rest of the family. It was something I should have done years ago." Cora looked down at her glass for a second, thinking that maybe she wanted a little more to drink. She shook the thought from her mind a second later; she didn't need to drink anymore, not while she was on the clock. "I didn't tell you because I knew I needed to be out here. You know as well as I do that family is a lot more important than a job."
Or, maybe Kate wasn't thinking that way? It sure seemed like it to Cora. Out at CCI, Cora had been working with a couple other COs and the warden on a new program for their inmates. Cora was of the belief that the inmates who weren't as violent and dangerous could be rehabilitated, and later released back into society. The jails were becoming overcrowded in most states, and if they didn't do something soon, they were going to be forced to let dangerous inmates back on to the streets because there was no room for them. It had been hard to separate herself from the program, but she was confident that they would be able to continue on without her. "They're still people, Kate. The way the COs treat inmates here is just fuckin' disgusting. Is there any sort of rehabilitation program here? You should be focusing on making these people change, not keeping them here. It's not possible for all of them, but it's possible for some." Maybe that was something Kate simply couldn't understand.

Kate couldn’t say what Cora had done in her spare time back in California because she simply didn’t know. She’d make her weekly call to her sister to check in but rarely had Kate bothered to ask of Cora’s private life. Seated now next to her she felt a pang of guilt over it. Cora was trying her best to do what was right as any older sister would. She’d given up a damn good job offer to reunite the Lawrence family. She’d taken one for the team, so to speak. It wasn’t that Kate was ungrateful for it, she wasn’t but she didn’t have it in her genetic makeup, not anymore, to make a big deal over Cora’s changing her life to come out here to Stepford Falls. Still there was that pang of guilt that was eating at her, more so the longer she looked at Cora, more so with each moment that passed between them. With Kate’s glass once again empty she stared at it but decided to pace herself. She’d have another drink later.
Cora wasn’t wrong, not really. Kate would agree that she was needed her but their reasons for her being needed differed and Kate wasn’t likely to agree with her. She shrugged her shoulder and crossed one leg over the other bent at the knees. Shifting her weight Kate sat with her body facing towards her sister. Kate watched Cora for several minutes before commenting. "I can’t lie, I’m glad you’re here. All I’m saying, Cora, is that I’m a grown ass woman and I don’t need a fucking babysitter. You could have come here to be with Marti and I, isn’t that reason enough? I guess not..." she trailed off with another shrug of her shoulder. She didn’t expect an answer and didn’t bother waiting for one.
Not only did Kate signed but she rolled her eyes in exasperation. "Is it?" she pondered aloud, "If family is that god damn important to you then you could have made the move to Ohio when Marti and I first came out here. Think about it, Cora. Marti might have had it differently if big sister had been around to protect her." Her eyes narrowed as she zeroed in on her sister. "Maybe you should have thought of Marti instead of yourself. You knew she needed you and you’re just now getting here? Tsk tsk tsk, family really isn’t that important to you now is it Cora?"
The lecture began as expected and the moment Cora began her rant at her Kate got to her feet leaving Cora seated alone on the couch. Taking several steps away from her sister Kate gritted her teeth, seething inside while Cora chastised her like a child. Kate was livid and the second that Cora grew quiet Kate whirled on her and pinned her with a narrow stare. "Are you even listening to yourself? Those...animals that you want to rehabilitate are rapists and murders. Pedophiles. Would you want those people that gang banged Marti walking free? I don’t fucking think so. So don’t come into MY GOD DAMN office lecturing me on how to treat inmates in MY fucking prison." Kate took a breath and continued on, "People don’t want to change, Cora! Let me lay it out for you. This is my prison and I’ll run it as I see fit. If you don’t like it you can hand me your resignation. This discussion is over. Now get the fuck out of my office before I have you thrown out on your ass."
