it was the weekend! The weekend! Suk Chul had never been so happy for those two days at the end of the week before. Today was the day he was going to Seoraksan National Park. He wasn't usually one to stray too far from Sokcho except for school field trips (but those didn't count because he was with his class and today he was by himself) but about a week ago for some reason he had really wanted to go out and have an adventure, and what better place to do so then there? Where he could run wild and free with squirt in his pocket oh the joy! He had felt so cramped lately standing around selling fish so it was only right that he'd be excited right?

Hopping out of the bus Suk Chul really did have enough maybe even more energy to get to the peak and back down. Luckily he had all day to explore so all of that energy he had stored in him wouldn't be wasted, he was really going to enjoy himself today. Backpack safely on his back he really couldn't hold in his happiness anymore and without caring much about the stares he was garnering he rushed towards the trail. "Wah! Squirt we're going to have so much fun!"

He had made sure to bring his camera with him. so every couple of feet or so Suk Chul would stop and take a picture of whatever caught his attention. Whether it was some unidentified thing on a tree or a rock that looked a lot like his appa he had made sure to stop and maybe place his beloved turtle next to it just so he would have some type of memory of his adventure today. He would have placed himself in the picture instead, but after a dozen attempts he realized that today just wasn't the day he would perfect this skill and instead would just have to use squirt as his model for today. He thought he was a lot cuter than him anyway.

Right at this moment he had placed Squirt next to a rock that looked like an exact replica of him you know minus the actual living part. There really were many interesting things at Seoraksan. If he could he would have lived there, but then again he didn't want to end up being the wild boy of Seoraksan, as much as awesome as that soundedl plus he would have missed his umma's cooking too much. Suk Chul stepped in close as he got ready to snap another picture. "1...2...3." click. "Squirt I should really send this to some modelling companies I'm sure you'd do well in some type of ad. You're so obedient and you're one handsome turtle." He obviously knew that his pet wouldn't actually say anything back to him. He wasn't crazy although the whispers from tourists walking by would say otherwise. He just had a habit of saying the things he thought outloud no matter how weird it was. Was that so bad? Maybe it was to some not that he would have really noticed unless they had said it straight out. Picking up his turtle Suk Chul began to hum as he continued on his way to the highest point of the park. What would he encounter today? Was his thought of the day. For some reason he was expecting or at least he was hoping for something he'd remember for a long time.

what a world we live in
Sunday Hwang had been living in Sokcho for approximately a week and a half, and she’d already explored the beach, the markets, the shopping mall, and even a few small parks. One place she hadn’t been yet, though, was the Seoraksan National Park.

When the teen had first announced her plans to head out and see the National Park that weekend, her father had gave her this look of utter shock. You sure are exploring a lot, he had said. Don’t you want to just stay in and relax this weekend? You’ll have all summer to adventure around…

Sunday felt a little bad about never being home to spend time with her father, but she had offered for him to come with her on several occasions. What he didn’t understand was that she just couldn’t sit still. There was no such thing as a “relaxing weekend” in Sunday’s mind; she was always out and about, taking in everything the world had to offer. And while she loved her father, he still had to learn that this was how Sunday operated. He hadn’t lived with her in quite some time, so of course it was going to take some adjusting on his part, but she was sure that he would get used to it after a while.

And so, she was off to the National Park that weekend, and the weather was perfect. It was nice and sunny, with a light breeze to cool her off as she hiked through the forests and snapped photos for her travel blog. Contrary to what most people would think, Sunday didn’t mind hiking alone. It gave her time to think and there was just something about engulfing herself in nature that gave her the biggest thrill. If she had to call one place home, it would be all the mountains and trails of the world. She would never tire of hiking (at least not mentally…physically was a different story).

As she breathed in the fresh mountain air, Sunday observed the other people around her. The trail she was on wasn’t too populated, but she had passed a few groups of people on her way up and there was one boy a little bit ahead of her that caught her attention. He looked about her age, and he, too, was snapping photos left and right. Only he wasn’t taking them of the scenery…rather, a small object. Sunday had no idea what it was, but the way he was talking to it and to himself made her laugh.

The friendly little socialite in her was compelling her walk right up to him. The boy was intriguing, and she loved intriguing people. She was always up for making new friends, too, and he seemed like the perfect candidate.

Smiling to herself, Sunday secured her camera strap around her neck and skipped over to the rock that the boy was at. Not bothering to worry about startling him, she bent over to look at what he had been taking pictures of and noticed that it was a turtle.

“Oh, how cute!” she exclaimed, smiling widely. She loved animals, and that little thing was just too adorable. “I’m Sunday Hwang,” she said, almost as an afterthought, holding out her hand to the boy in front of her. “And you have a really cute turtle. What’s your name?”

He had stopped again to take another picture. Squatting down this time to make sure the lighting was okay Suk Chul was already trying to keep his balance when someone had caught him by surprise and made him fall flat on his rear end. "Yah! What are you going around scari... "

The young male stopped mid sentence. He had lost his voice for a minute, though it felt like forever, as he stared at the girl. Was she talking to him? Was this pretty girl talking to him? He had to look around for a second there to make sure that it really was him that she was directing this greeting to. Doing this he realized that there really weren't many people around causing him to conclude that... she was! She was talking to him! Someone must have been smiling down on him right now or he must have done good or something. Was this luck or what? An actual girl was talking to him! ... as sad as that sounded now that he thought about it his thoughts sounded so lame. You couldn't really blame the guy though it was such a rare occurance for girls to talk to him. Unless you counted the ahjummas that bought fish from him every week, but then again this was different she looked around his age and she wasn't asking about the daily catch or how fresh his fish was.

He had gotten lost in his thoughts for a bit there but with a shake of his head he was able to come back to his senses before finally finding the words that had been slowly making their way out of his mouth. " S-Suk Chul. Lee Suk Chul my name is. I mean my name is Lee Suk Chul." He rushed getting up embarrassed at what had just happened and noticing the hand she had out shook it. That was what she had wanted right? He had been questioning himself and thinking a lot, maybe too much, in the short amount of time that had passed.

Suk Chul looked around and picked up the small animal that was slowly making it's way towards him. "and this is Squirt. I'm sure if he were able to speak... he'd say thank you for the compliment. Also sorry about yelling at you...Squirt wouldn't say that that's me talking." Aish. He really didn't know how to talk to girls. "I mean. You just suprised me that's all. Sorry."

what a world we live in
Sunday couldn’t help herself. When the boy fell flat on his butt, she laughed. She hadn’t been expecting him to react that way to her greeting, but then again, he probably hadn’t expected her to greet him at all. She was always forgetting that people in places like Korea and even America weren’t as friendly as she was. Back when she lived in Costa Rica, every person she came across was her new best friend. People were constantly engaging in conversations with strangers there, and it was hard to adjust. Sunday’s father was always reminding her that she needed to learn to respect other people’s boundaries, but she wasn’t sure she quite understood. Wasn’t being friendly a good thing?

The boy, after he pulled himself up and stared at her for a moment, introduced himself as Lee Suk Chul. Sunday couldn’t help but giggle a little at the way he stuttered, as if he wasn’t used to speaking to other people. Or maybe it was because she was a girl? Sunday had no idea; she wasn’t what anyone would call ‘romance savvy’ and although she was smart, she never picked up on those things. Suk Chul seemed nice though, so once she was done giggling to herself she gave his hand a good welcoming shake and flashed him a smile.

Suk Chul turned and picked up his pet turtle, whose name was Squirt, and began rambling again about how he was sorry for acting so surprised. Sunday wanted to laugh some more but she didn’t want to come off as rude.

“Oh, that’s okay,” she said, holding out her hand to pet Squirt. “I shouldn’t have snuck up on you. Sometimes I forget that other people think differently than I do.”

Sunday shrugged and then remembered what the boy had been doing before she interrupted him. She took a peek at the camera he was holding, curiously wondering if he was a photo fanatic or just a casual photographer like her.

“Do you like photography?” she asked, giving him another smile. She still wasn’t sure if she was freaking him out or not. Throughout her life, Sunday had found that people either loved her or hated her. Usually she was either too energetic for them to handle or just enthusiastic enough to catch their attention. She hoped Suk Chul didn’t find her annoying, because she liked him. She had a feeling that they could be good friends.
