Keep The Magic is a BBC Merlin RP set up October 22nd 2008. It follows the lives of those in Medieval England.
We are set very loosely around the the BBC plot. However, the events of 'To Kill the King' and 'Le Mort D'Arthur' have not happened here. Nimueh is not dead/possibly dead and Merlin knows nothing about the Dragon that he shouldn't and Morgana has not attempted Treason against Uther. ;)
Remember
This is not following the current storyline of the show. No season two events or characters permitted.
Also remember to keep spoilers in the spoiler section. You'll be temporarily banned for placing spoilers anywhere other than the correct thread.

I trust you to read these rules, I’ll be honest with you now and tell you there isn’t any sneaky phrases for you to later put into your apps, I don’t like doing that, it seems a tad silly. However, because I am being trusting and expecting you to understand these site regulations, you should stick to them in every aspect of the game.
GENERAL SITE RULES:
- Sign up with the name of your character. ‘Uther Pendragon’, ‘Arthur Pendragon’, ‘Morgana Le Fey’. Please do not join as ‘Camelot66’, ‘arthursprincess’… etc. Also, use capitals in appropriate places, i.e. beginning of the name. Feel free to add them to applications though if you want.
- There is to be no porn anywhere on this board. I don’t want external links to website with porn content. It is not necessary and I shall ban you on the spot. If you get a PM with website links like this, please forward it to me so that I can ban the member spamming you with these links.
- There is no need for violence or OOC drama to take place in the general chat, chat box or games area. I don’t want member fights around here; we are here to have fun. Roleplay is a game, not a profession or school place, keep petty arguments to yourself, but if there is an issue either take it to the person offending you via PM or IMs, or to me and I shall sort it out.
- Keep IC squabbles away from OOC talks, just because Nimueh and Uther hate each other there is no reason for those players to act the same way.
- I do not tolerate Racism/sexism/homophobia or any other disrespectful behaviour in any aspect of my life and so this also applies here. If you happen to be racist for whatever ridiculous reason, keep it to yourself because if I hear it then you’ll be gone before you can explain. This also stands for Religion, now I’m completely Atheist, I don’t understand much about any Religion, but I’ll keep my thoughts on it to myself, so, so will you. I don’t want this board over-run by Religious debates/fights. There is enough of that in the real world. Though bare in mind, these characters in this game are likely to be Christian/Catholic.
- Do not form little cliques on the board; it is like my pet hate. It is ok if you join with a friend, or that you prefer role playing with a certain person. But for the love of all that is good in this world… Do not just play with the one person, do not make others feel intrusive when they join. We are for everyone to enjoy and if I think people are being left out, you shall have a pretty little warning bar under your name. It isn’t not nice to be excluded. Don’t do it!
ROLEPLAYING RULES:
- Not going to set a word limit. But I don’t want one liners, one worders or anything along those lines, if the person you are rping with is giving you three paragraphs, try to match it with detail, give the other person a helping hand and give them something to reply too.
Basic RP principles: - No Godmodding, this means controlling someone else’s character or controlling their fates. For example: Arthur:
QUOTE
Arthur and Merlin were walking through the Courtyard. As they passed Gwen skipping toward the castle, Merlin waved. Jokingly, Arthur pushed Merlin to the floor, the sorcerer stumbled and fell backward, he landed with a thud on his arse and grunted a loud, ‘Ouch’ before standing.
As you can see here, Arthur has not only depicted Merlin’s actions toward Gwen, he has also decided that Merlin falls over and hurts himself, as well as suggesting what he would say. This isn’t acceptable as you should know.
- No Metagaming. I.e. Using your OOC knowledge in posts. I.e. that Merlin is from the Old Religion, he doesn't know that yet so how could your character? That people are sorcerers when your character does not know that, as in. If you know that Kallipso is a sorcerer that does not mean your character should know that. It also goes beyond magic knowledge, just don't pretend to know things your character should have no way of knowing.
- Please use third person in your posts; it is the easiest to do. (Third person is He, She, They... etc).
- If you make a Mary-Sue or Gary-Sue on this site you will not be accepted. I promise you now that if Merlin’s half-brother Albus Dumbledore decides to pop in, I shall hunt you down and shake some sense into your head. Dumbledore was a bad example but you will be expected to follow the criteria of the original characters application. No almighty, all wonderful so-and-so’s stealing the Prince’s heart or making Merlin fall head over-heel’s in love. ((The character criteria’s can be found in under this post.))
- You can have up to four characters, you must also be able to manage all characters. If you can't handle three characters (I.e. keeping them active) then don't make three.
- When posting please just use the basic format, post content only. No images/lyrics/of post counts included. You may use OOC notes so long as it is obvious it is a note and not part of your post.
IMAGE RULES:
- Your signatures can not stretch my screen, if they do then you’ll be asked to remove them or resize them. If images are too big it takes too long to load. Also, if anyone else is having issues seeing large images, if it's affecting download time, please let me know! I want to help. At biggest I'd say 500x290.
- Av's can be any size up to 150x200.
- I would prefer if you used actual people as your PBs… If you are making a canon character, use the PB’s from the show. Merlin is played by Colin Morgan, not Zak Efron, Gwen by Angel Coulby, not whoever your favourite actress of the month is… If you don’t like the characters look, then don’t pick that character.
- Try to keep PB’s a little less extreme, especially if you are playing a female, your character isn’t going to be walking around looking like a model or something from Page 3. It isn’t realistic. Realism is the key, despite the fact we are looking at fantasy and legend here.
MISCELLANEOUS RULES:
- These are medieval times, no Ipods, no girls running around in tight tank tops and mini-skirts with their full body on show. No guys prancing around in nice, fashionable jeans. They wore linen, wool, leather and cloth, lace, silk, velvet if they were rich.
- Don’t be spamming the board up with ‘I’m bored’, ‘this isn’t any fun’, ‘got nothing to do’, its annoying to read, if you’re bored, go find something to do? I can’t say much else than that.
- Mature rated content is allowed but it must be rated with a nice big ‘M’ in the title, it should be right before the name of the thread so that people can see it clearly. If you get half way through a thread and it changes to Mature without pre-warning, just edit the original thread and add it.
- Women didn’t get pregnant before marriage and they were usually teenagers when the marriage occurred. Spinsters were deemed a nuisance to society and I suspect a pregnant, non-married girl would likely have been punished, unusally but being excluded from society, people would have looked down on them. So that’s a no to pregnancies to unmarried folk.
- Do not tell people to hurry up with responces, it's just rude. If you are joking around and the other person knows it's meant as a laugh then that is fine.
- HAVE FUN!
Rules are likely to change or be added throughout time, I will alert you to updated rules.

CHARACTER RESTRICTIONS:
Sorcerers: We'll have 6 males and 5 females. This isn't including Nimueh, Morgana or Merlin.
Druids: 10 males and 7 females. 2 Teachers.
Knights: 34. <<Including training Knights.
Noblemen: 42<Not including Camelot Royalty.
Villagers/servants: Unlimited, including craftsmen, dress makers, etc...
Royalty: Other than show canon and the Family from Irick. No Royalty allowed.
SORCERER LIMITS:
If you are making a Sorcerer please follow these simple rules.
Uther has banned Magic so any practitioners of the craft should not be using magic publicly, if you are caught you will be killed (We'll have character executions if you like.)
Don't make your Sorcerer all powerful, I mean sure you can be better than Merlin; he's a bit of an idiot... lol.
I do believe Gaius found it extremely difficult to believe Merlin could do magic without spells, let alone magic since he was born. In this case, please use spells in your posts, unless I have given the all clear for being powerful. Likewise, it's probably unlikely you were born magical, it's something learned.
As there is a limit on these characters, use your powers responsibly. They'll be taken from you if not.
CREATURE USE:
As creatures don't actually speak, you can NPC them as you will. Try not to go to overboard though.
JOBS AND WOMEN: I have allowed a few women craftsmen in but please do try to keep female characters in female occupations.
Also, women were hard done by. They did not inherit, women with jobs such as those a man would ordinarily do, would be frowned upon and probably outcasted. You should also bare in mind, most women would have left jobs after they were married. Married women were often stay at home wives, unless for reasons of poverty in which case, they may have had to work.
Noblewomen would not have worked and if they did, they would definitly leave their post after marriage.
SPELLS:
I have it on good authority that the spells in the show are random Welsh words... They don't make up a proper sentence... Just Welsh words strung together. So, get your translaters out. Ah, thanks to Nimueh linking me to a Richard Wilson interview, apparently they also used Old English for spells too. Translaters: English to Welsh[Thank you Taran] and Old English
