Abbreviations
ABG: Arterial blood gases. ACLS: advanced cardiac life support; includes electricity (defibrillator) and drugs for life threatening arrhythmias ADD: Attention-Deficit Disorder ADHD: Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder AF: Atrial Fibrillation AMA: Against Medical Advice. a term used with a patient who checks himself out of a hospital against the advice of a person's doctor. While it may not be medically wise for the person to leave early, in most cases the wishes of the patient are considered first. The patient is usually asked to sign a form stating that he is aware that he or she is leaving the facility against medical advice, and the AMA term is used on reports concerning the patient. This is for legal reasons in case there are complications to limit liability on the part of the medical facility. BE: Barium Enema. BM: Bowel Movement. BP: abbreviation for blood pressure BUN: abbreviation for blood urea nitrogen CBC: abbreviation for Complete Blood Count. CC: abbreviation for Chief complaint. cc: cubic centimeter ( unit of volume; 1/1000 litre) CCU: Critical Care Unit CHF: abbreviation for Congestive Heart Failure. COPD: abbreviation for Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. CPR: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation DB: ER abbreviation for a dead body DOA: abbreviation for dead on arrival. DNR: abbreviation for Do not resuscitate; often requested or ordered for terminally ill patients. EEG: Electroencephalogram EKG (ECG): abbreviation for electrocardiogram; measures heart activity. EMT: abbreviation for Emergency Medical Technician. ER: Emergency Room FDA: Food and Drug Administration; Governmental agency having the legal responsibility for enforcing proper drug manufacture and clinical use. FUO: Fever of undetermined origin GSW: Gun shot wound. H & P: history and physical; the initial evaluation and examination of a patient ICU: Intensive Care Unit LOC: abbreviation for Level of consciousness or loss of consciousness. LP:A lumbar puncture. MI: abbreviation for Myocardial infarction (heart attack). (see ST wave) M & M: (Morbidity & Mortality) a conference held by many departments on cases that either ended in death (where there was an interesting diagnosis)--mortality, or someone with a good diagnosis--morbidity. More malignant programs use it to embarrass residents and their mistakes. MVA: abbreviation for Motor Vehicle Accident. NICU: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit OR: Operating Room PA: Physician's Assistant PICU: Pediatrics Intensive Care Unit PT: Physical Therapy; or Physical Therapist PVC: Premature Ventricular Contraction SICU: Surgical Intensive Care Unit SIDS: Sudden infant death syndrome SOB: Short of Breath STD: abbreviation for sexually transmitted disease.
