This question really puzzles me, when Dumbledore looked inside The Mirror of erised, did he really see socks? I doubt it... But why would Dumbledore lie if he did not see it?

Maybe he wanted Harry to feel happy because he could see his parents through the mirror and he really misses them.

Well, remember he was offered the position of Minister of Magic but he refused it. And he already is the headmaster of Hogwarts!
