Some Things Are Not What They Seem

Chapter One

The Patient

I stretch my fingers out and feel a soft surface below me. My eyes are not open, but I can tell that I am in my room. They must have taken me here, after I fell asleep in the library. My fingers roam and feel hard pressure on my wrists. They had cuffed me down, like they always do, afraid that I would hurt myself.

But I never did, and never will.

The reason why me, Lily Evans, is in this mental ward is simple. They believe me a nutter. Ever since I had started going to my dream place, everyone thought so.

I don't understand why they still cuff me down to my bed, as my dream place has never hurt me before. No, Hogwarts would never hurt me.

It was usually at night, when I visited my secret Hogwarts. The magical school, where everyone was a witch or wizard. The classes where you could spend hours learning at a time. The dorms where you would spend the night cramming for a test. And the people.

Yes, the people. There was Albus Dumbledore, with his long white beard. Minerva McGonnagal, with her stern looks. And then there was Argus Filch, the dirty caretaker from Hogwarts.

And of course, there were other students beside me.

There was Amos Diggory, the famous Hufflepuff Quidditch player. He could score three goals in five minutes. Molly Prewitt, who graduated in my first year of dreams, was an amazing cook. Her fiance, Arthur Weasley, was very interested in muggles. There were times when he came up to me and ask a question about them.

The bad students, A.K.A. Slytherins, were as evil as can be. The main ring-leaders were Lucius Malfoy, and his thugs Crabbe, and Goyle. They seemed to run the house, and never missed up an opportunity to pick on the other students. There was never a day that he called me a 'mudblood.'

Then there were the Marauders.

The Marauders was a group of four boys, intending just to have fun. James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were there names. I never got real close to them, but I found it suspicious how they looked like a younger version of my doctors.

Another thing about my visions, is that they work like the Hogwarts school year. In my fantasy, students go to school from September to June, so that period is when my dreams start.

The doctors often hear me muttering in my sleep, they say. I don't care, to me Hogwarts is real.

I open my eyes for the first time, once I hear footsteps into the room. I see Dr.Black standing over me, in his white labcoat, and was undoing my restraints. He cast me a small smile, and I blinked.

He only smiled, when I was to be tested.

These testings came often. Their main reason was to see if I had gotten any better, or any worse.

Whenever I try to tell them, that they are in my fantasy world, they just laugh, and say that they were in the real world, the whole time. But they don't understand. They don't understand that anyone can be brought into my Hogwarts, just like my sister was.

Yes, she appeared at Hogwarts, but only once. This was when I first started having my dreams, and she was there to call me a freak, one last time.

Dr.Black helped me stand up, and he led me out of the room, into the long hallway. He guided me down the long corridor, waving at people as they looked at us.

My thoughts were all saying that my Hogwarts was real. That there was someplace where magic was taught. When I was in my dream-mode, I could actual feel the wand in my hand. I could taste the delicious food in my mouth. I could hear the students chattering. It was real to me.

The doctor had now reached the end of the hallway, and gently pushed me into a back room. I glanced around and saw the usual test room. There was the chair, the machine, and the window for the doctors.

He didn't need to tell me to sit down, for I knew what to do, but he did so anyway. Once this was done, he attached an arm from the machine onto my forehead. Another followed. Then one was placed on either one of my arms, and one over my heart.

Dr.Black exited into the window room, from which he and the other doctors could observe me. Looking at his comrades, he switched on the machine. A gentle buzzing noise filled my ears, and the machinery tickled my skin.

"Alright, Lily,"said Dr.Lupin, standing with his clipboard. "I need you to tell me what you saw in your visions last night."

I looked at him and shook my head.

He raised his eyebrow. "You saw nothing?"

I nodded. "I told you already. I only can see them from September to June." I told him with a force, hoping that he would finally get it.

"Why only then?"

"Because that's when term starts for Hogwarts."

He nodded. I could see the regret in his eyes.

Dr.Pettigrew interjected."What do you do in this...Hogwarts?"

"Learn magic."

"Do you think this is real?"

I nodded.

Dr.Potter looked at me, with a soft expression in his eyes. He always seemed to be doing that these days. As if he was trying to catch my eye or something.

But I would never, EVER go out with any of my doctors. That's just sick.

I watched as the doctors before me, in the window, gave each other a look. I had seen this look many times before. It was the look people gave as to say,"She's crazy," or "She's a hopeless case," in my doctors' eyepoint. I noticed that Potter gave me another look, as Black was talking to him. He caught my eye and winked, before turning back to his conversation.

The four paired around a small scrap of paper, which I could not see from my chair. They were talking, but I could only make out snippets of what they were saying.

"...new plan..."

"...make her realize..."

"...help her get through..."

"...just might work..."

The guys in front of me turned to a machine in the window room. Examining it over, Lupin picked up what looked like a Zorro mask, and eyed it. He nodded, and turned back to his buddies. They shared a secret smile, which I caught.

From what I could tell, they were going to do something to me with that machine, but I didn't know what.

It was late the next night, when I finally found out.

I was trying to sleep peacefully, to slip into Hogwarts through my thoughts. I became suddenly aware of the eerie silence around me. I heard the door open, and I jumped.

I could not see in the darkness, but felt a presence around me. Someone or something touched my shoulder. I jumped once more, out of surprise.

It was Dr.Potter, I could tell. For his hand seemed warmer than the other doctors, whose hands must have built-in air conditioning, as an added bonus. When they touched me, I felt as though I would turn into an ice cube. But when Potter touched, I felt like I was warm, next to a fire.

He started fiddling around with things beside him, with his free hand. I heard something click, and he assured me that it was nothing to worry about. (I had jumped again.)

Then, after whispering a faint,"Sweet Dreams, flower." Dr.Potter lifted something in the air beside me.

Next thing I knew, something was eased onto my head, over my eyes, and I saw nothing.

But then I saw something.

Something I never thought I'd see.

See awake, that is.

I found myself sitting an a very long table, surrounded by hundreds of other students. They wore black robes, and as I looked down, I realized that I did, too. There were other tables, also seated with students.

All of them seemed to be looking at an old man standing up at the front of the Hall. He had a beard so long, it looked like you could put it in his belt. His matching grey hair seemed to be also. This man was talking a long speech about start-of-term notices.

I recognised him at once. He was Albus Dumbledore, another person of my dreams.

And this was Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Dumbledore motioned, ready to announce another part of his yearly talk. "And now, I must introduce the new Heads, as it seems appropriate to do so."He waved. "The new Heads are Mr.James Potter..."

James stood up. I knew him as one of the Marauders, the one who was always clammering me to go out with him in my fantasies. The crowd around him waved, and cheered.

"And the other is Miss Lillian Evans!"

At this, I was shoved to my feet, by a girl that I had seen only in reality. But I knew that I could bring anyone into the dream world.

While the crowd cheered for me, I smiled at the girl in front of me.

Her name was Ana, and she was my best friend.

She smiled one of her true smiles at me, while I sat down. I smiled back, before glancing up at Dumbledore. He had already sat down.

I was appalled as Ana shoved her face full of the food that now appeared in front of us. Mashed potatoes, gravy, and turkey flew everywhere. I laughed.

She gave me a look.

About that time, a shadow sneaked up behind me."Hello Evans."

I turned around, and instantly smiled. Although I had hated this person in my dreams for so long, I decided that it be best to get along with him while I can.

"Hello James."

The look on James' face was priceless. He looked as if a house elf had come through in the background, wearing nothing but a teacozy. (Well, now that I think about it, there WAS a house elf, with a tea-cozy, who decided to dance in at that moment, but anyways...)I ignored the strip-tease going on in front of McGonnagal, (who looked like she was enjoying it, I might add) to see that his mouth was gaping, for I had just called him by his first-name.

Trying not to laugh at the scene over his shoulder, I replied with a, "What do need James?"

He still had that look on his face, but once again, I ignored it. He finally regained his posture, and closed his mouth. "Um...I was wondering if you would go to Hogsmeade...with me, in two weeks."

I remained silent, and he moved on, with a scared look in his face.

"This is the last time, that I'll ever ask Ev--I mean, Lily. If you say no, I promise never to bother you...ever. For the rest of our lives. But I want you to know that I'll change for you. I'll stop pranking, stop joking around, stop messing my..."

He was broken off by my hand raised up, for him to stop.

I smiled, and he prepared for the worst, as I gave him my answer.

Now, usually, in my dream, I would say an automatic "no." But given the circumstances, I absolutely HAD to say,

"Yes."

I am not the kind of girl, who likes the chase a guy gives her, but I realized that this might be the only opportunity to actually date someone, out of my ward. Besides, now that my dreams are real, I have nothing to hold back.

Laughing at the look on his face, I glanced at Ana. She too, had a very shocked expression on her face.

James reacted back,"Um...okay. I guess...meet me on the 15th, that's the first Hogsmeade trip."

I smiled. "See you there." And with that, James and his fellow comrades went back to their own part of the table.

Also, at this point, another student joined the table. She had long, flowing chocolate brown locks, and a deep purple eye color. I recognized her at once: Destiny, a fellow Gryffindor. Her eyes were wide.

"Did I just hear the legendary, Lily Evans, just say yes to the pompous James Potter?"

I nodded, and smiled.

She looked at me like I was crazy. She patted me on the back. "Good luck taming that beast."

Ana cutted in. "But aren't you dating Remus? What about him?"

"What about him? He's the perfect guy. Quiet, sweet, and thoughtful..."she droaned on, with a dreamy expression on her face.

Ana and I laughed.

----------------------------------

It was now 8:00pm.

Me and James were sitting on the couches, talking, in the Heads' common room. I sat in the armchair, while James sat on the couch, near the fire. The glow from the embers illuminated his face, and once again, he reminded me of Dr.Potter.

But I quickly shrugged that thought out of my mind. London City Mental Institution was gone now. I was here, at Hogwarts.

James looked at me. The glow never left his face.

"Why did you say yes?"

I blinked. You'd think that being a guy, he would just be happy to hear a yes, but now he has to ask why? This was going to be hard.

"Um, well, I figured...that because its out last year, and all. That maybe...I could give you a try." I swallowed saliva before I said this last part. "You never know...we could be soul-mates."

I turned away, but I caught a quick smile from him. A smile that proved that I did the right thing. A smile that showed that I truly made him happy.

A tear gathered in my eye. He really does like me.

I wiped it away.

Deciding that it was time for me to get some sleep, I went over and quickly kissed James on the cheek. "Goodnight James."

"Goodnight Lily. Sweet dreams."

And with that, I dragged myself into my private dorm, and plopped onto my bed. This had been a hard day.

Meanwhile, outside a tall boy was approaching a lone figure near the lake. His hair was slightly tussled by the night wind. He stepped in a slow manner, as if still deciding whether or not to approach the girl. Eventually he did, and she turned around.

"Sirius? What are you doing here?"

Sirius gave a faint smile. "I knew you were out here. You can't hide from me, Kat." He came up behind her, and she could feel his breath on her neck.

Kat smiled. "So, what do you need me for?"

Sirius stopped. "Well, I was just in need of a answer to a question that has been bothering me for a while now, ever since the end of July."

Sirius started up. "Well...I have this friend, see. He really likes this girl, and even went out with her. She was the one to break it off, but he thinks that she loves him, though." He turned to look at Kat. "What should I tell him?"

Kat stared off at the crescent moon, in wonder.

"Tell him that maybe there was a reason behind her break-off. He should ask her why. Then he can judge."

Sirius looked her straight in the eye. "Why did you do it?"

She stared at him, too.

"Tell your friend that she did it because she was scared, that she might do something wrong."

Sirius blinked. "What would she do wrong?"

"She's scared that she might do something to hurt him, to break his heart."

"And how would you know so much about this girl?"

Kat stepped toward him. "I happen to know this girl."

"Oh?"

"She says that she misses this friend of yours. How he used to make her laugh, how he would pillow-fight with her, how they would kiss in the moonlight."

Sirius took a step forward to her.

"What would this girl say if my friend were to ask for a second chance?"

"She would say yes, without a doubt."

Sirius put his hands on her shoulders.

"How about it then?"

Kat looked at him with a smile.

"Of course."

He laughed and picked her up. He whirled her around and then sat her down. "God, I missed you so much."

She laughed too. "I did too. Now kiss me you idiot."

And he did.

With all of their love and passion embedded deep inside them, they made up for the time lost, and were soon both encaptured by the romance.

More to come!

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, a man in a long, flowing black cape swept torward the middle of a courtyard. This courtyard was nothing but stones, which were jagged and rocky, but this felt like the perfect place for this man. He seemed to fit in. Stepping torward the center of his followers, he began to chant. "Y ceh porpeht em llet."

The followers who had gathered around him, looked up into his eyes, as he repeated the phrase over and over.

"Y ceh porpeht em llet."

They were surprised as a long silvery cloud of smoke appeared, from which formed a man. His head was tied back in a turban, and you could not see his eyes. But none dared to speak, as their master would surely punish them. The man from the smoke came forward with a swish of his cloak. Bowing deeply, he approached the master.

"Lord Voldemort, sir. I have brought the news you expected."

Lord Voldemort looked proudly upon the man in front of him. "You do well, Zoltminer." It was then that the Death Eaters realized that this was in fact, a woman, and not a man.

Zoltminer smiled evilly. "I only live to serve." She hastily began into her news. "She's accepted, My lord. She accepted his question. She's playing right into our hands."

"Brilliant"said Lord Voldemort, cackling, while his red eyes shone with delight. "It shall not be long now before another one of my guests arrives."

As on cue, a figure suddenly pounded in.
