Life had definitely taken a turn for the surreal. A month ago, Ella would have been at school, probably in the library, preparing for her NEWTs. She would not be sitting here at a party thrown by the minister of magic. She would not be pining after her professor, who sat a few tables away. She would not be fatherless and mourning. It was amazing how quickly everything could change. A few months ago, her biggest concern was whether or not to take advanced potions. Shaking her head, Ella idly played with her food. She had arrived to the party with Dorcas and Celestina, albeit unwillingly. The two girls had worked all their magic, figuratively speaking, and charms to get Ella to come. It had been a month since the Azkaban outbreak and the brunette still felt the loss of that night. But where as she had been numb earlier on, Ella was starting to feel the full impact of the loss of her father. After staying a week at home, she knew that she needed to go back to school. Every moment she stayed at home, she would find herself waiting for the front door to open and her father to walk through. It seemed the whole family was doing that, walking on eggshells. It had driven her crazy. Luckily, school and her friends had offered her an emotional reprieve.
<p>
Instead of moping around in the dorms, Ella finally agreed to accompany her friends to the party. If she was completely honest, Ella had to admit that she was curious about what a ministry party entailed. It wasn’t as if she attended many herself. So far, it was pretty much what she had expected. People milling about in gorgeous clothing, officials mingling with one another, making connections, students looking absolutely bored. It was definitely interesting to watch. Though, she couldn’t help wondering if someone had spiked the punch. People were starting to act a little strange. She didn’t think Kirley and Charlotte Greengrass were that close, but were currently making googley eyes at each other. But then again, who knew? People change. Thinking of happy couples, though, Ella found herself looking at Cal. Things had definitely been awkward between them! Since that night together, she couldn’t quite bring herself to talk to him about it, and it seemed, neither could he. It was something that she’d have to really consider later.
<p>
Since they’d arrived, Cas and Tina had disappeared somewhere, she wasn’t sure of. So, Ella decided to simply enjoy her food by herself. Just as she took a bite of her salad, she felt a hand reach around her and nick one of her tomatoes. She turned around, smiling as she saw Merton near her. And just like that, she felt her heart race. Merton Graves was standing near her. How had she spent so much useless time pining over a professor or being sad? She should have been with Merton this whole time. She looked up at him, giving him a warm smile. Good Merlin the boy was good looking. Ella just wanted to run hands all over her. She stood up, taking his hand. “Merton! I’m so glad you’re here. I’ve been looking all over for you, darling.” She felt herself lose all her inhibitions. Usually she never made a spectacle of herself, not wanting to draw attention to herself. But now, she wouldn’t mind screaming from the rooftops, that Merton Graves was the love of her life. Hmm…that wasn’t such a bad idea. She grabbed her wine glass and clinked it. “Ladies and gentleman! Sorry for interrupting you, this evening! I would just like to tell you all that I, Elizabeth Vera Fawcett, am madly in love with this man, Merton…” she blinked, realizing she didn’t know his middle name. After asking it, she finished her impromptu little speech. “…Paul Graves. Thank you!”
<p>
Ella then turned around, beaming at Merton. “I hope you don’t mind the announcement. But it’s true. I’ve loved you for what feels like forever, Merton! I don’t know why I never told you before!” She then leaned over, wrapping her arms around him and pressing her lips against his. Hmmm…yes, this was definitely love.

Merton hadn't exactly been keen to attend the party that the minister was throwing. It wasn't that he didn't like a good party, it was just that he had a lot of stuff happening at the moment, and sometimes, you just needed to take a break from hitting on girls. And he knew that if he came to the party, that was all he would be doing. But of course, where the band went, he went. And besides, he knew that if he didn't go, all he would hear for the next month was about how fantastic the party was, and how stupid he was for not going. Merton might not have been the brightest guy, but even he took offense to being called stupid for things that he had some degree of control over.<p>

He spent a decent amount of time, scoping the place out, checking out the talent (because he could not just let pretty girls go by unnoticed), and staying as far away from the punch as possible. There were a lot of things that Merton was oblivious about, but party punch was not one of them. He didn't trust beverages unless they had been made with his own two hands (or by the house-elves). You never knew what people put into it for a laugh. It didn't take long for him to get bored though, and so he began scanning the room for a pretty girl to hit on. His eyes fell on Ella Fawcett. She definitely fit the profile. Sure, she was in his house, and was a prefect to boot, and clearly out of his league, but she was funny, and cute, and worth talking to even if he wouldn't get anything out of it. He snuck up behind her, and stole a cherry tomato off her plate, popping it in his mouth before she could protest. He adopted a rather cheeky grin, anticipating the moment when she turned to confront him, the tomato thief. But he never could have anticipated the moment that occurred.<p>

The moment that Ella turned around to face him, it was as if his world changed in an instant. It was like he was seeing her for the first time, and he wondered how he had not ever seen her like this before. She was...perfect. Merton had never been in love, so he had nothing to compare this feeling that had bubbled up inside his chest to, but he was pretty sure that this was it. He was in love with Elizabeth Fawcett. And the way her face lit up as she smiled at him. He felt like no one else in the world existed but her. He felt like a little bit of an idiot for wondering if she felt the same way. It just seemed so natural, and he couldn't understand why he hadn't worked it out earlier.<p>

He didn't protest when she grabbed his hand. He did think about it when she subsequently dropped it moments later to grab her glass instead though. Instead, he just watched her with fascination as she declared her love for a man named Merton. It took him a moment to realise what she was saying when she turned to ask him what his middle name was. He didn't want to tell her, because he didn't particularly like his middle name, but at this moment, he would have done anything for her, so admitting his slightly lame middle name was nothing. It still took a moment for the fact that she was proclaiming her love for him to the whole party to sink in. It didn't seem real, but at the same time, it did. It was hard to explain. All he knew was that this was the best thing that had ever happened to him.<p>

Merton shook his head in mild protest as Ella began speaking. No, of course he didn't mind. Why would he mind the girl of his dreams proclaiming her love for him to a bunch of people? It was fantastic. He would have told her just how strongly he reciprocated her feelings, if she hadn't leaned towards him and kissed him. Professing his love for her could wait for later, right now, he was a little busy. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer to him, and kissed her for all his was worth. Definitely should have done this earlier. After a few of the best minutes of his life, Merton finally tore himself away from Ella. Well, his lips at least. He felt as though he really needed to tell her how he felt.<p>

<b>"Wow,"</b> was all that he could think to say. No, that wasn't anywhere near wordy enough for him. <b>"I love you too. I don't know how I didn't see it before. I've never been in love before, but wow."</b> He paused for a moment, trying to find the right words, but coming up completely blank. There was so much he wanted to say, but he just couldn't find the words. So instead, he settled for, <b>"can I kiss you again?"</b> After all, it was polite to ask for a lady's permission.

What had started out as a night filled with dread and anxiety was quickly turning to be one of her best. Coming to this party, Elizabeth had wanted nothing but a distraction from the fears and grief in her life at the current moment. She was tired of worrying about her family and trying to figure out what was going on between Cal and her. She’d never really been in a relationship as serious this. Ella had no idea how to navigate these rough torrents. It didn’t help that she was the “good” girl who was having to lie to all those were close to her. It was enough to make any relationship difficult. But the brunette had honestly thought that their love would make everything possible. She didn’t deny it, still, but she was coming to realize that it wasn’t everything. Ella was usually quite grounded, with a level head. But she’d never been in love and optimistically hoped that everything would fall into place. But there was a reason why Shakespeare’s quote, “the course of true love never did run smooth,” withstood the test of time. She just needed to talk to her boyfriend. They really needed to sit down and work through their problems. And to be honest, it wasn’t really a problem, it was her irrational emotions. She needed to let go of the grief and guilt she felt over her father’s death. It wasn’t her fault, it wasn’t Cal’s fault. Still, it hurt. She sighed, glad for the distraction that the new arrival offered her.
<p>
And then Ella’s world changed…
<p>
Why on earth was she sitting here, pining away for Callum Cooper? He may have been okay to look at to the objective eye, but he didn’t come close to the boy standing next to her. Merton Graves. He was simply gorgeous. His twinkling eyes, his luminous smile, his graceful body, everything about the boy was pure poetry come to life. She traced her fingers down the side of his face, staring in awe. She felt her heart beating faster, her cheeks flushing, butterflies storming her stomach. It was like she’d never been in love before, and until this moment, she realized that she hadn’t! She’d never felt like this about any other man, past or present. Cal seemed like a relic from a not-too distant past. Merton Graves was her life now. She knew she had to tell him, she couldn’t hold it in any longer. Ella was amazed that she’d been able to thus far. In fact, rather than just whispering it to him, Ella told it to the whole room filled with people. The emotion within her was just that great, it needed to be said.
<p>
Elizabeth smiled at Merton, apologizing for telling the world her feelings before she had the chance to tell him. She was relieved when, upon kissing him, he kissed her back, with great enthusiasm. God, he was a good kisser. She felt like she could get lost in them. She didn’t think she’d need anything else in this world, if she had a kiss from Merton. Ella beamed at the boy as he told her that he loved her too. Those butterflies that had been swarming in her stomach kicked it up a notch, cmaking her giddy and excited. This really was turning out to be the best night ever. “Oh Merton, I don’t know why I never told you before! You’re my whole world, did you know that? I didn’t think I realized it until now! I’ve never wanted anyone like I want you!” With that proclamation, Ella nodded to Merton’s question, finding it silly that he even needed to ask. There was nothing she wanted more than to kiss him. So that was exactly what she did.
<p>
The seventh year, Hufflepuff melded her lips with his, pressing her body flush up against him. Merlin he was built nicely. She wanted nothing more than to discover every inch of him, for the rest of her life. Trailing her fingers down his arms, Ella looked up into his eyes. She just about melted when she saw that he looked back at her with the same look in his eyes, that she was sure were in hers. “Don’t ever leave me, okay? You’re my whole world and I want to spend the rest of my life with you!” As she said the words, Ella knew them to be true. Life was definitely taking a turn for the better! <br><br><br></div><div style="width: 400; font-family: courier new; color: 35363A; line-height: 95%; font-size: 8; text-align: center;"><br><br>
