Drew was positively beside himself with excitement. A sense of pride washed over him as he looked at the Hillman Husky sitting in his parents' driveway. She wasn't the prettiest car in all the world but to Drew she looked like a million galleons just sitting there waiting to be tinkered with. He had gotten to his parents' house about a fifteen minutes ago but had yet to go inside because all he could do was stare at that heap of junk marvel. His mother opened the screened door, smiling at her son and asking him to come on inside and say hello. It took him a few seconds to tear his eyes away from the car, and he definitely looked over his shoulder at it as he walked toward his house and inside. As he embraced his older sister who was waiting in the foyer for him, his mother began fixing his hair, claiming it was far too shaggy and that he needed to get it cut. His father smiled, gave him a hug and then retreated back to the kitchen to enjoy the remainder of his breakfast. Naomi shook her head, "I can't believe you think you're going to be able to fix that car. Do you even know how to do that?" she asked, fully expecting him to say no.

Drew smiled as he dropped his bag on the floor and opened it, allowing his older doubtful sister a peek inside. Books about car mechanics filled most of the bag. "Not exactly but all of the dudes who wrote these books do and I've been picking it up pretty quickly," he retorted before zipping his bag shut once more. Okay, so maybe picking it up quickly was a little bit of a stretch since he hadn't actually put what he'd learned to practice, a point his sister made. He scowled, "And Ezra's coming by later to help me figure it out. He knows about cars." Naomi shook her head as she walked away while his mother enthused about the fact that Ezra would be coming to the house which was followed quickly by scolding because now she was going to need to prepare a fancy dinner since they would be having a guest.

Ezra had been the first person Drew had told outside of his immediate family that had been present when he'd returned from his big purchase about getting his car. He knew that his buddy was good with cars, he at least knew how to drive them which was more than Drew could say, and it would be fun to spend some guy time together - drinking booze, working on the car, having man talk about horse power and the like. Ezra and Drew were alike in a lot of ways but most especially when it came to anything Muggle-related. If someone was to meet Drew for the first time his extensive knowledge about comic book superheroes, space travel and his excitement for the Star Wars movie that was to be released later that year they'd probably assume that he was a Muggleborn. That was a huge compliment to him because it meant he'd done the research and fit the part. He loved everything to do with Muggles. It was the same joy he got when he visited somewhere foreign and didn't stick out like a sore-thumb, like a tourist. This didn't happen very often but when it did, it was awesome.

Heading into the kitchen, he grabbed the family's cooler, filled it up with beer and ice, which caused his mother to raise an eyebrow and his father to say that he hoped Drew would be replenishing their supply before he left. Laughing to avoid answering, he quickly left the room. Picking up his bag full of books, he slung it over his shoulder and made his way out towards the car with the cooler in tow. Once he got to the Husky, he set down the cooler, grabbed a beer and began drinking. Sitting down, he extracted one of the books from his bag and opened it up, wondering where on earth he was even supposed to begin. When was Ezra getting there? Drew probably should have asked how he was coming. Should he be waiting by the fireplace? Outside in the driveway? Somewhere else? Eh, he'd figure it out.

“Yeah mum?” Ezra leaned back out of the door of his car. The woman was washing her hands on a dish towel, her dark hair framing her face just so. Stepping out the house she walked towards her sun sitting in the car. Stopping just outside the door, she looked at her soon with a look that seemed like he should know what she was thinking. This was Ezra we were talking about, he wasn’t exactly the most intuitive person in the world. Like a lot of guys his age, he wasn’t good at guessing the underlining meeting of thing, he had to be told things straight out or else he wouldn’t be able to guess.

That was the trouble with women, they always assumed everyone else could read their thoughts. Ezra kind of wished he could though, of all the super powers he could have, he would pick telepathy. Finally holding out her arms a wide smile stretched clean up her cheeks. “Give your mum a kiss.” Letting out a dramatic sigh, Ezra hoisted himself out of his seat and stood up to face the woman. He was a lot taller than the elder woman, but that never made a difference. Wrapped his arms around her, he placed a quick kiss on her soft check before pulling her tight to his body for a brief second. He was a momma’s boy and he made absolutely no apologies for it. Pulling away, he looked back down at her with a soft glance.

“You be sure to thank his parents for letting stay. And send Drew my best and let him know any time he wants to come over he’s welcome. Drive safe sweetie.” Standing up on her tip toes to give her soon another kiss on the cheek, the woman turned back in the direction of the house, stopped once on the stoop and turned to watch him pull out the driveway. Ezra was going to visit his friend Drew Alden for several days and help him work on his car. No doubt the task of working on the car would take them more than one day anyways. He knew was Drew was excited about this, so he wanted to take his time teaching him the basics of the automobile. Yes, Ezra was a wizard, but he was a also a muggleborn and their father had insisted and an Katie get a driver’s license when they were of age. He had been driving for two years solid before he actually got his license. His mother had deemed him ‘quite a good little driver’. He just hoped that didn’t mean she expected him to drive her around everywhere. He loved his mother to pieces but he flat out refused to be her chauffer.

It was early morning and he had a six hour drive ahead of him. He had a lot of time to himself. Time to think about the upcoming semester and what would become of him and Quinn Valentine the amazing girl he had met in detention. He smiled at the thought of her. He wanted to know her better, he wanted to take her on a date. He couldn’t deny the attraction he felt towards her, sitting next to her, touching her hand, it was downright electric. But he also had the entire holiday break to think about her. What he had to think about was whether or not Cleo was going to make it to Dumfries and Galloway, six hours away. He had a feeling she would, she had made longer treks in the past. It was just good to drive her again. Stepping on the clutch and pushing her into fourth year, Ezra sped down the empty countryside road.

He had some lunch his mum had packed for him in the passenger seat for when he got hungry later. For the weekend he had packed his trusty set of tools to work on Drew’s car with and a small duffle with a few essentials. The ’62 Lotus Elite sputtered as the new gear kicked, and Ezra was suddenly worried that she might die on him but her sputtering soon ceased and she was back to humming along. They would both make it there in one piece. The hours passed by quicker than Ezra realized. Before he knew it they were in Scotland and not too far from Drew’s home. About an hour ago Ezra had finally caved and dug into the lunch his mum had packed him. A turkey sandwich with left overs from dinner, a bag of crisps, muffin form the batch she had baked and a container of water. It wasn’t the most healthy meal in the world but fat kind of had the habit of slipping straight off his bones.

Finally, pulling onto the street where he knew Drew’s house to be on, he heard Cleo start to protest. She was coughing, sputtering, and putting up an outright hissy fit. He managed to roll into the drive way when she finally shut off. At least he had arrived. Ramming the gear into park, Ezra got out of his car and smiled at his friend who was sitting next to his clunker and drinking a beer. Ezra had arrived right around the time he had told Drew to expect him. “Mate! Nice ride! One minute though! Having a lover’s spat…” Smiling he gave his friend a quick wave before rounding the front of his car’s smoking lid. He popped the hood and looked at the engine. Letting out a sigh he turned back around to Drew. “Looks like she’s about to divorce me….I might need one of those beers.” It looked like they would be working on two cars today. “Hop over here and you can have your first lesson.” He waited for his friend to join him by the smoking engine of his poor dear Cleo. She was almost done for, but Ezra was determined.

DREW T. ALDEN - May 10, 2012 07:30 PM (GMT)
[dohtml]

The car had been one of the most effective distractions from Samantha. Drew had been able to pour his efforts into figuring out how to transform the heap of junk in front of him to something magnificent rather than how to get one Samantha Wilkinson back into his arms once more. Tegan and her baby had also proven to be a wonderful distraction from his tumultuous love life. He'd always had a soft spot for Tegan that dated back to his childhood crush on the older woman. He had a tendency to put her on a pedestal though he would deny doing any such thing. Drew actually had a tendency to do this to just about anyone he was close to; his closest friends were above reproach in his books and there was little they could do to truly cause him to look down on them. Lucas so far was the only person to have managed such a feat. Even with everything that had gone down between Drew and Samantha he was unable to think poorly of her.

Now that he thought about it, maybe he only did this to the women in his life. Merlin knows he did it with his mum and sister but that was only natural, wasn't it? Flipping through the book, a newspaper fell out from between the pages. It was one of the Muggle newspapers he'd picked up earlier that month. He'd already scoured most of the pages but he was always looking for distractions, even when it came to things he was obsessed with, and began thumbing through the pages to refresh his memory. It was surprising how much he cared about the happenings of the Muggle world. Outside of the sports section, he knew much more about the going ons of the Muggle world rather than the Wizarding one. Why? Well, he didn't really know he just found their news to be more exciting because everything was just that...new. The Daily Prophet was filled with articles about attacks, different ways to get rid of household pets, and other random information he'd heard of before in some form or another. Besides, December 1976 had been a big month for Muggles! Fidel Castro, a total Marxist. Drew liked the idea of a communistic lifestyle but c'mon, was it practical? Not really...or it didn't seem that way. He honestly didn't know enough about it, just gathered his opinions from that of others at the Muggle pubs he frequented. OJ Simpson was having a killer season. He rushed 273 yards! That was unheard of! The Bills might actually have a fighting chance that year.

Drew heard Ezra's arrival before he saw him due to his immersion into the book that lay open on his lap. With a grin, he looked up to see Ezra pulling in with his car sputtering and finally quitting, thankfully, after he had managed to get in the driveway. He shook his head while laughing gregariously when his mate coined the event as a 'lover's spat'. "Fickle creatures these automobiles," he replied as Ezra poured over the contents beneath the hood. Laughing once again as he grabbed one an extra beer he exclaimed, "Don't let 'er divorce ya!" He was already on his way over when his mate beckoned him over to come get his first lesson. As he got to Easy-E's side he extended the beer towards him, then realizing it was still open quickly opened it with his handy keychain before offering it to him once more, "So what's the problem?" he asked excitedly. "Out of sorts with jealousy because you were coming to fix another lady car?"

Slapping him on the shoulder, "Dude, I almost forgot to tell you!" he exclaimed. "So I was reading the Entertainment section of the newspaper the other day," he began before adding, "Don't judge me for that. But anyways, they're talking about some new film coming out next year. It's called Star Wars. There's not a whole lot about it out BUT it's about space. And fighting," he rambled excitedly. "But that's not even the coolest part. They're doing some of the filming here. Well not here, here. But in Surrey and Hertfordshire and I bet they're going to need some extras...." he said with a grin, hoping Ezra was catching on. "You down to give it a shot?" If anyone was willing to go along with this ridiculous plan of his it would be the boy standing beside him.
