ChessV, is it a hoax?

I googled for ChessV, and Wikipedia stated this was an open-source program. Which would be good, because then I could easily adapt it for WinBoard protocol.

But when I follow any of the given links where I am supposed to download it (also links googled on other pages) I get to some commercial website that does offer a free Chesmaster game, and a host of other comemrcial crap (including dating...) but does not mention ChessV anymore. Same thing for the website of the alleged author. The links to sourceforge.net are disfunctional.

What is the deal here? Was ChessV retracted?

If someone can help me to the sources of ChessV, I would be grateful.

Greg Strong used to constantly debate me about the 'worthiness' of the Gothic Chess patent. He used his software program, ChessV, to display a slanderous message whenever anyone would edit the board to play Gothic Chess. When the program started to search from the Gothic Chess starting position, a dialog box would come up and spout all kinds of lies about me and the Gothic Chess Federation.

I filed a law suit against Greg Strong and SourceForge.net, they banned him from their site and forever removed ChessV from being able to be distributed there. Letters from my attorney also got it removed from every hosting site on the internet. This took about a year, but it was worth it.

Having said that, I hold no grudge against "ChessV", just its mentally unstable programmer.

I have the ChessV program and its source code. You can download the program here:

Well, thank you for the link.

sad.gif Unfortunately, the source files seem to be missing from the archive. At least, I could not find any files with an extension related to any programming language I am aware of. Are you sure you have them? Only an execuatable, some text files, many bitmaps and some sgf files (which I suppose contain games that have been played). From the staet of affairs you describe, I figure it would be rather pointless to search for them on the web...

H.G.,

Did you try and run the ChessV program? It will play Gothic Chess right from the launch at the tournament time controls.

The source code files are here:

http://www.GothicChess.com/programs/ChessV_source_092.zip

This version of the program has "disabled" Gothic Chess from being playable, so you will have to hunt around in the code to turn off that software switch.

FYI.

I'm sorry to say but this is pretty exaggerated statement. ChessV v0.81, for example, contained no statement about Gothic Chess® whatsoever. The source for v0.92 says
QUOTE
The position that you are trying to play is protected by a U.S. patent. Play from this position is not supported.
Your patent contains the position, so the first half is most certainly true -- as for the second section, it is every programmer's private decision if he supports anything. v0.93, although the source was never made available, in the program contains identical statement, and nothing further.
It should be noted however that the v0.92 program source is a bit of a challenge to get compiling under, say, MS Visual Studio... If one feels like testing its playing strength in Gothic Chess®, then the simplest way to do so is implement set of rules, including castling and such, on a mirrored board setup. True that it takes some time to get used to the actual coloumn A being J in the program, and such, but it works.

Just thought it would be right to mention the above

That is NOT what was displayed when version 0.91 reached the Gothic Chess starting position.

The message was slanderous enough that SourceForge removed ChessV from their sites and banned Greg Strong's submissions forever.
