What a Sunday we had here in the GFA with the Rebels and Pirates game ending in over time. The formerly winless Victoria Rebels defeated the Pirates in overtime for a 13-19 final score. Finally the Rebels seemed to liven up a bit and mesh although their offense still hasn't proven to be as deadly as expected. The Pirates took an early lead on a field goal in the first and then a touchdown in the second quarter but would only go on to score one more field goal late in the game for the tie that sent this game into overtime. The Rebels were blanked in the first quarter but came alive with a touchdown in the second and then rode out field goals in the third and fourth, eventually taking the game on an overtime touchdown.
Szneckers would score the only touchdown for the Pirates with one of his two receptions on the day (27 receiving yards). After Jacquizz Rodgers got shutdown early and often as the Rebels limited him to a measly 2.4 ypc average with one fumble, it was all on quarterback Tom Manning who threw for 184 yards at 34% efficiency, while allowing 2 picks. Nick Main was Manning's favored target as he managed 7 receptions for 147 yards but couldn't bring the ball down in the end zone. The dismal Pirates offense that has failed to find themselves so far this season got shutdown a whopping 8 times today, allowing Pirates punter Ak-Bar Abdul-Wahad to boot for 308 ridiculous yards.
The Pirates defense wasn't terrible on the day, limiting the Rebels to 19 points and two touchdowns. Pirates' defensive captain, MLB Doctor Pepper led the way on the day with 6 tackles, 2 of which were for a loss. Newcomer G.G. Salamander only managed a single tackle on the game but is expected to contribute more in the future.
Kris Johnson, the Rebels ailing halfback managed to score the first touchdown of the game on a 1 yard run. Johnson probably had the best game of his GFA career thus far with 56 yards on 20 attempts (2.7 ypc) with only one fumble. That isn't great compared to some of the better halfbacks in the league but good for him nonetheless. Rebels quarterback Eric Eggleston had a decent game with 143 yards (9 for 28) but did manage to stay pick free and found Ryan Jones in overtime for the eventual 51 yard pass for the winning touchdown.
Although Jake Bruml led the defensive in statistics during the game for the Rebels with 5 tackles on the day 4 of which were for a loss, it was CB Justin Wood who managed 4 tackles, 1 for a loss, and 2 interceptions to take the player of the game award.
"I think we played an ok game, it was definitely a nail biter. Both the defenses played well but our offense couldn't open up or maintain any type of lead on the Rebels. They have a lot of talent and you knew that eventually they would pick up their first victory, I just wasn't sure if it would be against us. Hopefully this helps their team get back on track but hey we'll see if they can take this win and build off of it. We obviously have some issues to work out on the offensive side of the ball and I honestly think that we got out coached today but that happens sometimes," commented Pirates prospect G.G. Salamander.
