Title: Aircraft carriers
Description: Cant find any of the carriers

seaharrierfa2 - February 12, 2012 08:32 PM (GMT)
Hi I have downloaded all the carriers from this site and installed them as instructed but having checked that all the files where in the correct place i cannot find any of them can anyone help.

I'm running FSX Acceleration sp2.

Two things to check first, a) have you got any FS9 AI Traffic installed, if so none of the FSX AI traffic will show up, B) Have you got the AI Boat and Shipping Traffic above ~40% it's in settings->display->traffic off the top of my head. You can probably set it to 100% without any adverse effects to be honest.

If you want to check the carriers are there it's worth getting AI Carriers as you can place the ship just in front of you in game rather than hunting it down!

seaharrierfa2, Are you looking for the carriers in a drop down GO To list or searching the area where they should be.

If you downloaded all you should have 2 versions of HMS Victorious and 1 of HMS Ark Royal.

There are 3 saved flights for Victorious that I know of, in FSX click on the saved flights box in the top left corner of the screen you should find saved flights for cessna aboard HMS Victorious at Scapa Flow, Gibralter and Iceland area they are all at sea and you should arrive on deck in a Cessna, you can change aircraft when aboard bearing in mind if you sellect a twin engine aircraft you will need to start one which will be stopped as the Cessna is a single engine as you know, normal auto start keys ctrl + . should do it.

Let us know how you get on, I am 8 hours ahead of you if you are in UK so there may be a time lapse.

Thanks for the advice from both of you.

I uninstalled the traffic add on I had which was the cross compatible version from just flight and that has done the trick.

All I need now is the AI carrier program and to write down the timings and locations for the ark so I can practise my landings :-).

BZ to the makers of these awesome ships and planes that flew off them.

Thanks again :-)

Hi , I am getting some weird problems in that I can see the Ark coming out of Lisbon but not Gib and as it approaches Gib (i.e. just before the straits) there is time jump and it disappears. The Ark does not appear leaving Gib at any of the detailed times or in the English Channel or off the coast of the USA.

Next i can find Victorious coming out of the Fjord in Iceland but not at Scappa and then i can see Vic (44) at Sidney but not coming back or at any of the other locations.
I have tried adjusting the times (days/GMT/local) and position (long/lat/alt) at these positions but to no avail.

When I can find the ships they respond How do I spot the difference between the FS9 AI Traffic installed and FSX AI Traffic

...in short does anyone know what’s going on? :blink:

Hmmm, odd. I can see the Ark leaving Gib and Lisbon, although there does seem to be a point around Cape Trafalgar where she disappears which I think may be due to a timing issue.
The English Channel route actually spends most of her time off the Isle of Wight as I got the maths wrong!

Could you confirm what level you have your AI Ship and AI Boat traffic set at? I can't remember the exact level the routes kick in at but if you set the Ship slider to 100% there still isn't enough traffic to affect frame rates. Try that and see if things improve.

Hi Skippy, the Ship and Boat traffic are both set at 80% (+). the other weird thing is with the saved flights for victorious the scapa flow doesn't produce a ship where as the other two (Med and Iceland) do.

out of the three Ark Royal scenarios it appears that the Lisbon to Gib' leg is the only one that works.

I am running FSX (Acc) on W7

I will try a "make-safe" a complete unload followed by a load and see what happens.

but if you have any other suggestions... :blink:

I am new to this site so please excuse some basic questions.

I have just downloaded and installed the Ark. I have Javier Fernandez's Nimitz also in FSX; I have checked the C/FSX directory and see that the Ark is installed into the FSX/SimObjects/Boats/ folder so that is OK.

I have looked in the "Select Airport" section of FSX (with Acceleration) and typed Ark into Airport Name / Airport ID / City and it does not show in any location (but then, nor does the Nimitz). I have also looked at Load Flights, no sign of the Carrier's tracks.

I have looked in Missions (all categories) to see if I can find the tracks, again, nothing.

I am sure I have done something wrong but can't think what it is.

I have used Nikki's addition to the config.d file of AICarriers but the file has saved as a .TXT file instead of a .CFG file and I don't know how to save it as a .CFG.

Also, does the ARK have ILS? Is it the same as the FSX Carrier (112.00) or Javier's (111.00)?

Thank you for your help.

Aircraft carriers don't show up in the 'Select Airport' dialogue, from FSX point of view they're just AI ships, the fact you can land and take off from them is coincidental so there's no Airport ID associated with them.
Similarly there will only be flights to load if they were supplied with the carrier model, I did this for the Victorious but I don't think I did it with the Ark. Ditto missions.

Find the file, right click on it and select 'Rename' from the menu that appears, change the .TXT to .CFG

From a technical point of view no carrier in FSX has an ILS what has been done is a gauge that finds the carriers and then interprets their position to provide an ILS display, in a similar way to the Buccaneer's TACAN works. I think the free ware Etendard has an ILS that can 'tune' into the Ark, although as far as I'm aware she never actually had one.

Hope that helps,

Skippy

Dear Skippy,

Thank you for your replies. I have made the config.d file into a .CFG file; removed the USS Roosevelt carrier from Formation 1 and replaced it so it now reads

[formation.1]
title=Ark Royal
unit.0=Ark_Royal, 0, 0

The Roosevelt still appears when I press Shift+J to bring up the AICarriers menus but not the Ark. Do I need to change something else? Any ideas as to why the tracks do not show?

I am using Windows 7, is this significant?

I have looked at all the ship pages; the Ark is nowhere to be seen on the list. Disappointing. I have no idea of what to try next.

For info what are the "frequencies" used by the Ark?

She must have had at least an ADF. For info both Dino Cattaneo's T-45 Goshawk and the F-18 modified by Christian "Sludge" Snow both have fully functioning Nav1, Nav 2 and ADF. The F-18 also has a working fresnel lens as well. This can be transfered into the Goshawk and works.

I have looked at the exhibitors at the Weston FSC on 19/20 May but do not see your name listed, will you be there?

Thank you for your help and patience,

Tregarth

Hmm, odd I just tried doing the same thing and it worked. Was FSX running when you made the change? I think AI Carriers reads the CFG files when FSX loads so it wouldn't register any changes made while it's running.

Also thinking about it, if you're running Win 7 is AI Carriers in your Program Files or Program Files(x86) folder? For fairly sensible security reasons Win 7 doesn't make it easy to change things in those folders, but less handily doesn't throw an error to let you know the change has failed.

A few things to try, make a copy of the CFG file on the desktop, delete the one in the AI Carriers folder and then copy the one on the desktop back in.

If that doesn't work you can change the UAC settings (put UAC in the search bar on the start menu and it should pop up) if you reduce it to one of the lower settings it makes things easier.

Alternatively un-install AI Carriers and reinstall it to somewhere other than Program Files or Program Files(x86) as it then won't be protected so any changes you make to the CFG files should keep.

Alternatively, alternatively, you could make another CFG file in the conf.d folder, i.e. copy one of the ones in there, change the name to Ark.CFG or whatever and then edit the contents to just include the Ark, e.g.

[formation.0]
title=HMS Ark Royal (Single)
unit.0=Ark_Royal, 0, 0

AI Carriers will read each CFG in turn so the Ark will probably turn up right at the end of the list.

Reference frequencies etc. I know the Ark had a TACAN, which is more than most ships in the RN today, but I don't know what frequencies various gauges use to simulate this. Basically they're set by the programmer of the gauge rather than the modeller of the ship.

Unfortunately I can't make the Weston FSC this year as I'm overseas and unfortunately I'm the only member of the team who even lives in the UK!!

Dear Skippy,

Thank you for your help. I have now discovered I had 2 copies of AICarriers on the HD; I was trying to adjust the wrong one. I have now deleted it and the Ark Royal is now present in the North Sea near Manston. You are to be congratulated on good work. I will now fly out to her and have a good look round.

I cannot find / do not know where the “Tracks” are, would you please point me in the right direction?

I have also sent you a personal message.

Thank you,

Tregarth

Tregarth,

Sorry, just noticed my PM inbox was full so it may be worth resending your message!

I think the carrier tracks should be in the read me that comes with the carriers, I'm 99% sure this will be in the carrier's folder in teh SimObjects/Boats folder.

Skippy
