Title: Fanstuffs
Description: The goods and bad...
TheDenzel - May 1, 2008 06:59 PM (GMT)
As the title says, what's going on with our fanstuffs? I've seen this mentioned a few time here and there but I think there should be an actual topic to talk about it. The unfinished topic description was supposed to say, "The goods and bads of our current Wiki's fanstuff." I feel this needs some dicussion because I'm not too happy with the way things are going.
First off, I'm tired of seeing so many interactives. They were fun for a little while but now they've just gotten old. There's nothing original to any of them, and more and more keep being created that stay orphaned. Now I'm not saying to ban the creation of more interactives (though in a sense that would help things), but rather asking if anyone has any ideas as to how to steer the wiki back to how fanstuff used to be...
Sam The Man - May 1, 2008 07:27 PM (GMT)
I agree. There are too many interactive. I don't know what to do.

We continue on with our day! We ignore the ignorant! Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can!

I do! Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Pick me! Pretty please?! Okay, the answer is...
MAKE SOME DANG FANSTUFFS!
Im a bell - May 1, 2008 11:12 PM (GMT)
Yes. What you do is STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE n00bS. IT STOPS YOUR PROGRESS. Let's look at it in math terms; e stands for Experienced, n for n00b, and u for User. e(u)-n(u)=0. Sub in 2 for u; 2e-2n=0. e=n THEREFORE: WORRYING ABOUT n00bS MAKES YOU A n00b, NOW SHADDAP.

Actually, you peoples just seem to care because the interactives are there. I don't see a problem with them mostly because I don't give a pfargtl.
HRFFjcm - May 2, 2008 12:55 AM (GMT)
Yeah. If you don't like interactive games, don't play them. Simple as that. :stinkoman:
Also, Stinkoman Sprite Comics is an interactive, so don't complain about interactives themselves.

1. Agreed.
2. HUH?
Shwoo - May 2, 2008 01:18 AM (GMT)
I'll admit that I've been sick of seeing the interactives on the Recent Changes page for a while, but if some people are enjoying them, then I don't see what the problem is.
What's killing the fanstuff is the reluctance of new people over the age of about fourteen to touch the fanstuff because they think it'll make them stupid* by association or something. And I don't really see a way to solve that.
*I don't think anyone on the fanstuff is stupid. Some people are just inexperienced.

Yeah, but it's like Text Adventures in its heyday. It floods the recent changes, even for people with Advanced RC on. This makes it so that the fanstuffs worth a jibney get lost in the sea of endless subpages in the RC. However, we must approach this problem accordingly: it's not the fanstuff, it's the RC flooding. So that's what we'll fix firstThen we can start polishing the fanstuff.
I suggest an automatic subpage collapser in the RC, so we can see past the mountains of stuff into the other fanstuff.
TreeWithAChainsaw - May 2, 2008 01:24 AM (GMT)
I disagree with Shwoo. I don't make fanstuff, not because I think it will make me stupid, but because I can barely find time to go on the wiki/forum. And it's not videogames that are taking up my time either. It's homework.
Shwoo - May 2, 2008 01:37 AM (GMT)
I said "new people". People who have been here for a while and just lost interest don't count.

TheDenzel - May 2, 2008 03:01 AM (GMT)
I didn't mean that they should all end now. And I've been trying to spark new fanstuffs but no one pays any attention to them. It seems as if all the new users got the impression that interactives were like the only way to go.
Sam The Man - May 2, 2008 10:45 PM (GMT)
I think it was Homestar's Resort that sparked the Interactive crazy spree.
But, Interactive Games should be banned I think.

Um, you 1st/2nd gens are acting stupider than us 3rd gens. All you have to do is IGNORE US 3RD GEN N00BS. And, stop being prejudiced. All you are doing is trying to make Interactive Games the 4chan of Homestar Runner Fanstuff. Besides, it AIN'T gonna work. Interactive Games have been on the wiki since it's start. Nobody'll destroy it now.
Shadow Scythe - May 3, 2008 02:33 AM (GMT)
The problem is that lots of the earlier users were once excited to write and make fanstuff. Our initial excitement has waned, and only stick around because our old friends are here too. Then there's the ones of us who just got sick of it and left. Take a look at Shim-Sham-Sam for example. Basically, we've lost interest, and we're still here because the absence of the Fanstuff community would be like a hole in our souls.
Oh, and another reason is that the lack of feedback caused some people to think others didn't care. Neglected, they just decided to stop trying. Or they left. And so the ones of us who have gone inactive have been replaced slowly by a very different audience. Because of our differences, we don't usually get along. The end!
Hey, I'm trying to get people excited again. I'm doing things. What about you?
HRFFjcm - May 3, 2008 02:44 AM (GMT)
I'm doing things, too, but it never helps! No first or second generation user ever wants to listen to a third generation user. :(

That's not true. A couple of fan fictions have been popping up. But I can't bother myself to read a fan fiction that might (MIGHT) not end up being that good and it's by someone I barely know at all. Try making a sprite comic or some other type of media. Then I might pay attention. :seizure:
JeRM - May 3, 2008 03:42 AM (GMT)
Wow. I just clicked on recent changes and it was all Homestar's Resort. Eh, whatever. Not like there'd be anything better on recent changes.
Oh, and I think I should start a Stinkoman good Stinkoman Sprite Comic soon. Maybe I'll call it Stinkoman 20X6: Unloaded, and I'll start with level four to explain the read plot line behind Stinkoman 20X6! Yeah! A great idea!

If you or anyone else wants to do something like that, I'd suggest waiting a little while longer until the end of Reloaded. You'll see. :eekdance:
Also I decided to click a random non-interactive fanstuff on recent changes for a nice quick read of what the fanstuff wiki's up to these days. It was a toon transcript with improper formatting all of six lines long. Huzzah!
I'm fine with enjoying the new users, just point me in the way of something I can enjoy. :seizure:

Meep.
:sb: STRONG BAD: {typing} Anyways, we lost our funding or public interest waned or something distracted us. Man, what was it? What could possibly have distracted us from {mumbling} humbera hum...
Obviously, we're all distracted with other things. Me? I've always wanted to write more Ductape but his adventures don't seem to pop out to me anymore. One day in the summer when I'm tired of playing Battlefront I'll try to complete that old Coach Z thing I started and didn't finish.

Nobody seems to be paying any attention to this post. Especially people throwing out the argument of "JUST IGNORE THEM i mean it's not that hard they're only flooding RC."

No. You're wrong.
Ah, yes, here we go:
Text Adventure TakeoverA lot of the arguments that are for interactives and against are simple retreads of the arguments for and against this. They might not be explicitly stated as they are here, but the intent was there, alright.Back then, we also had the problem of clogging bandwidth. I'm not very understanding on this - do we still have limited bandwidth? If so, how much do we have right now?

I only made one interactive! And I stopped using that, anyway. I'm talking about my FCE, OCB, and sprite comic! Nobody cares. -_-
EDIT:
Guys, you have to see this.

EVERY ARGUMENT FOR WHY INTERACTIVES SUCK: *Edits for interactives clog up the Recent Changes page, making it harder to find edits for other fanstuff, or for important matters like finding vandal edits.
*Pretty much all of them contain very little in the way of HSR-ness. For a lot of of them, it's just a title like "Homestar [blank]" or "Free Country [blank]" and that's it.
*They're the bottom of the bottom of the quality barrel. They're boring, rarely creative, and overall just plain crappy.
*They're all the same crap. There's over 9000 of them, and yet the vast majority of them are all nearly identical. The only major exception I can think of is Chwoka and Sterrance88's Thy Dungeonman Online(the new text adventure-style version), which was pretty much the only interactive I ever found enjoyable.
*Almost all interactives become inactive and dead after a while, yet more and more new ones keep being made, adding to the already large pile of dead interactives.
*BIGGEST REASON: They distract new users from making more meaningful edits. For every user that makes a piece of fan fiction or some other piece of decent fanstuff, a lot more are roleplaying in an interactive. Plus, with less non-interactive stuff being created, the little that does get made is in catergories that are already over-saturated and past their prime, like Other Character Emails or sprite comics. |
TheDenzel - May 8, 2008 02:51 AM (GMT)
I'm not saying the idea of interactives are terrible, I'm just saying that there are far too many cheap, no thought, no effort, interactives and barely anyone is doing anything else.... Maybe if the wiki were better at interactives...
Dennis Dunjinman - May 8, 2008 10:35 AM (GMT)
Does anyone know play-by-post roleplay?
We come up with a campaign instead of a world, everyone claims a Homestar Runner character, and the players go forth! Of course, the "game mod/campaign master" would be there to come up with new missions and new obstacles in the campaign. Clunk?
Shwoo - May 8, 2008 02:36 PM (GMT)
I love roleplaying, but I prefer character driven roleplay over plot driven roleplay. Especially Homestar Runner, which is very character driven.
Or maybe I just like making the plot up as it suits the situation. I don't know. I really should be in bed.
TheDenzel - May 8, 2008 07:05 PM (GMT)
That sounds pretty cool. Just as long as it seemed correct. Someone should set something like that up!
TreeWithAChainsaw - May 8, 2008 10:33 PM (GMT)
The only problem is that you get fights over who gets to be what character, and stuff like that. Also, that might be kind of hard to organize.

I don't think so. Certain other forums I frequent have play-by-post gaming that is very easy to play with. Currently I play one of the "heroes" while the game master plays the major characters and the villians. Other players play other heroes.
I'm guessing claiming comes on a first-come first-served basis. All you need is a campaign and you can begin the quest. Meep?

Are you talking about roleplays that require dice?
Why are the case Homestar Runner questing? They don't seem the questing types.
