I have written SRD Minister Honorable Frank Oberle asking him to withhold the zoo's permits. SRD.minister@gov.ab.ca A touching and truthful video. Someone must step up to the plate and save this elephant, a hopeless elephant won't last much longer. |

Lucy is still stayin' put Calgary Zoo’s elephants are packing their trunks, but Edmonton’s Lucy is staying put. Edmonton Valley Zoo veterinarian Milton Ness said the situation in Edmonton is completely different, even though both zoos are getting out of the elephant business. “We’ve got an individual elephant with a very specific problem that doesn’t allow for us to be able to move her,” Ness said. http://www.edmontonsun.com/2012/04/19/lucy-still-stayin-put Some good comments, including this one from "Jeanne10": There are those of us who won't stop fighting for Lucy until a panel of 9+ independent experts rules that she is too ill to be moved. City council and the zoo can end this issue once for all by doing this. The one and only outside vet to examine her has a history of bad decisions regarding elephant welfare but please include him in this panel. I bet he would be the one dissenter as he was with Maggie in Alaska. -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. They need to be browsing, foraging, socialising. Thanks to a member of TEC Facebook for alerting us to this report with video - there is a poll facility for voting.
Top court won't hear appeal on Edmonton's Lucy the elephant Courts shouldn't be expected to take over animal husbandry when there are other public bodies with that responsibility, Justices Frans Slatter and Peter Costigan wrote in their majority decision. http://www.calgarysun.com/2012/04/26/top-c...cy-the-elephant -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Thanks to a member of TEC Facebook for alerting us to this blog from Born Free USA's Canadian representative.
A Jumbo-Sized Tragedy for Lucy the Elephant According to reports from zoo visitors, she’s largely kept from public view of late, although some of her defenders have glimpsed her at a distance, and worry that she’s limping more than ever. http://www.bornfreeusa.org/weblog_canada.php?p=3242&more=1 -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Edmonton mayor slams Toronto’s ‘ridiculous’ motion to move Lucy the elephant
An irate Mayor Stephen Mandel slammed Toronto city council Wednesday for its “ridiculous” motion urging Edmonton to ship Lucy the elephant south ... But Mandel said the best veterinarians in North America have checked out the Valley Zoo’s lone 37-year-old Asian elephant and determined she wouldn’t survive a long trip. Among other ailments, Lucy has a long-standing respiratory problem that experts fear could be fatal under the stress of travelling. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/technology/...2253/story.html -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. McCartney helps Edmonton activists who want Lucy the elephant moved
But now the former Beatle, in Edmonton for sold-out concerts Wednesday and Thursday at Rexall Place, is proving it by lending his support to the Valley Zoo’s namesake, a 37-year-old elephant. The musician and animal rights activist has granted permission for representatives from the organization Voice for Animals to set up a display at the arena both days advertising the plight of the pachyderm that advocates would like to see removed and sent to a sanctuary in a warmer climate where she can enjoy the companionship of other elephants. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/story.html?id=7622484 -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. As I post this article, I see it is minus 13 degrees C in Edmonton with light flurries.
Is this a proper place to keep a lone Asian elephant? Staples: That’s the smell of rhetoric wafting around Lucy the elephant http://www.edmontonjournal.com/travel/Stap...0372/story.html -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Protesters block traffic at Valley Zoo, say Lucy the elephant should be moved The Lucy the elephant debate was reignited on Family Day, when a group of more than a dozen protesters gathered at the Valley Zoo in an effort to spread their message that Lucy should be moved. Protesters want the 38-year-old elephant to be taken to a sanctuary before it's too late ...
