From BEES - Burm and Emily's Elephant Sanctuary Facebook:
WE ARE GETTING AN ELEPHANT HELLO EVERYONE, You have all eagerly been waiting for when BEES will have its first elephant. On Sunday we took our mahout (we found couple weeks ago) to meet with the owner of the female 45-50yrs old elephant we have been wanting to rent who has been chained in a small patch of her owners property and out of work for about a year now. The mahout and owner got on really well together, so well that the owner decided he wants to start walking her straight away. Straight away meaning TOMORROW!!!! The plan is to start walking at about 9am stop over night in a village and continue on Thursday morning stop in another village on Thursday night expecting to arrive back on the BEES site by Midday Friday. KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED that everything goes well in the next week and this old girl will be able to have some real time to be semi-free. https://www.facebook.com/pages/BEES-Burm-Em...175152789215063 Photo posted 23 hours ago: This is Approx 50 yr old female elephant her name is Mae Kam we are going to be renting/ retiring at BEES! From BEES Facebook this morning:
Hey everyone Mae Kam is doing really well! Yesterday she destroyed a bamboo tree when she went for a sniff down the river. Then she came back and munched on some grass that we planted. She keeps makinglots of squeeks. We bought her 100 stalks of bananas which we chopped into bunches and are now stored in the mahout hut and 20 banana trees 400 baht from burms cousin the day before yesterday. She really loves banana trees. -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. They need to be browsing, foraging, socialising. They need to have reason for movement." Update today from BEES TEAM:
Mae Kam has been having lots of fun in the forest the last few days, so much that she has been having sleep-overs cause we can't get her to come back to the property. We tried banana's, pumkins and her favourite inner peice of banana trees and she still wants to stay in the forest. We think she caught a taste of real freedom and is affraid she's going to lose it. Well Miss Mae Kam not on our watch. Your going to have the sweet life of munching on wild vines, bamboo and whatever else in the forest you enjoy eating for a very long time and we are going to make sure of it. More pics to come soon, really sorry its so hard to get the time to upload them because internet takes hours to upload photos here. Muddy hugs, -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. They need to be browsing, foraging, socialising. They need to have reason for movement." Update today:
Mae Kam still sleeping in the forest, very stubborn Ele she is. A bit of a princess, she has been munching on natures glorious food, natural vines, trees and bamboo and is so full that not even the banana's or pumpkins or whatever else we have to offer bring her closer to the property. Our staff go out and watch her during the day and by night secure her in a good food source area in the forest. We have managed to get her from being about 1.5km from the property to about 10 mins walk away (for people). But with any elephant walk they stop to eat for an 1hr and then walk 10 steps and then stops to eat for another 1/2hrs and then walk 5 steps and so on. But we are still all happy to watch her doing this because this is the way life is meant to be for an elephant munching on natures food and just being able to BE AN ELEPHANT -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Mae Kam is doing really well, such a lovely and lively elephant. When I first met her she seemed very depressed and sad but she has blossomed since arriving at BEES and really touches our hearts everyday. Hoping we can have more ele's experiencing life like Mae Kam very soon! https://www.facebook.com/michael.medlar?sk=...&type=1&theater -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Update today from BEES Facebook:
Went for a great walk with Mae Kam yesterday in the pouring rain. She found a secret opening in the forest and there was a beautiful waterfall and lots of natural Banana Trees absolute heaven. She was enjoying it so much until she got a fright from a little Non-poisonous snake that sent her screeching through the forest and stopped about a KM away it took a while to get her back poor girl. But she enjoyed the day for the most part! Mae Kam really wants to see more Volunteers soon so please book to visit her and hopefully other ele's soon and have lots of lovely experiences and adventures watching elephants in freedom. -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation.
