From DSWT Facebook this afternoon - report and photo.

NEWLY RESCUED ORPHAN ELEPHANT

On Sunday we received a new born calf into our care from the Wamba area - Northern Kenya. His mother had been shot multiple times and fatally wounded. The Kenyan Wildlife Service team called to the scene made the decision to euthanaise the mother and rescue her calf.

We have called the baby BARSILINGA after the area where he was found. We guestimate he is about 2 weeks old and he is already completely hooked on his Keepers seemingly disinterested at this stage with the other orphans.

3 new photos from DSWT this morning:

Barsilinga our latest arrival and youngest member of the Nursery unit is a very endearing little fellow who absolutely loves, loves, loves his Keepers. He also provides Kithaka and Maralal with another little play mate, and the older orphans are constantly fussing around the three tiny babies.

Orphan profile for Barsilinga now online:

The baby, which was in good condition, approximately a two week old tiny bull still pink behind the ears and was given the name “Barsilinga” after the area close to where his mother met her grizzly end, just weeks after giving life to this precious baby.

Photo of BARSILINGA.

Barsilinga, the youngest elephant at our Nairobi Nursery is thriving in our care.
Born at the end of March, and rescued at just 2 weeks old, Barsilinga is now 4 months old. He enjoys his mud baths, coconut oilings and soil dustings. Barsilinga used to remain close to his keepers, but is bolder now, joining in with the other orphans. He even sometimes rushes to lead the other small babies to their mid-day milk feed, refusing to be overtaken!
