OMG Meiyu! on Voice of America

Someone needs to work with Jessica Beinecke to make an episode on our message.

"OMG" is becoming a hit in China. On the Chinese equivalent of YouTube, "OMG" has garnered more than seven million views. And on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, the program is now followed by more than 200,000 people.

How does marketing on Sina Weibo work?

The social network, owned by SINA Corporation, counts today more than 300 million users....Sina Weibo started in 2009, and has been able to attract millions of people thanks to its features, and to the presence on the platform of major worldwide consumer brands, together with a number of local and international VIPs....

Among the first to interact with the millions of Chinese fans we can count Tom Cruise...NBA star Kevin Durant, the actress Emma Watson, and the British rock band Radiohead....

...More than 130,000 brands are active on Sina Weibo...

Weibo results on "When the buying stops, the killing can too." Worth noting, entries by users: Xue Single, WWF, and Stray Dogs and Cats Inn on ivory and eles. I posted so we can get a feel for what's going on in China on Weibo.

Thanks, t&tt, for posting so much on this topic.
Big question - but what is your reading of the outreach in China?
Will it have an impact on the criminals who run in the trade - or the really big money at the top?
My feeling is that the message will take so long to be absorbed that it will be too late for the elephants ... I will hope you disagree!

s4e, my sense is that more Chinese people need to learn that we are dangerously close if not already in the sixth mass extinction in the history of the planet thanks to humans. The Chinese demand for ivory is fueling the demise of elephants and they need to hear this. Social media use especially in China is exploding. I think person-to-person grassroots communication is another avenue we should pursue. We are in the eleventh hour. We need to try everything.

The big campaign started by WildAid is "When the buying stops, the killing can too!" Iain Douglas-Hamilton has borrowed the phrase, too. We need to appeal to any Chinese-speakers we know to spread the message on Weibo and to their friends and family. Start conversations. Share the links.

Sina Weibo will be launching an English version soon. Hopefully that will help, too. In the meantime, we have to think of every possible way to get the word out.

WildAid: How to end the illegal wildlife trade, Dec 2011

In terms of wildlife conservation, you need a portfolio of initiatives. You need a well funded anti-poaching unit, undercover investigations and crackdowns, and demand reduction at a much greater scale. You need to make it socially unacceptable to have rhino horn. You need high profile prosecutions and serious punishment.

With Enterprise 2.0, Sina Weibo Looks to Cash in on Social Ads

Sina Weibo is the most attractive social platform in China for marketers. I’m speaking from the perspective of a social media professional in China: I’ve had countless meetings with clients who want Sina Weibo as the focus of their social media strategy. Despite the vast potential, Sina Weibo has yet to deliver a respectable product for its ad clients.

Sina Weibo Enterprise 2.0 changes that.

Public buses in Beijing, China, will be mobile Internet hotspots for commuters to connect to the Web through Wi-Fi, following a deal signed between China Mobile and the city's bus service provider....China Mobile, however, did not announce when the service will be launched, it added.

Baidu on mission to save the planet on World Earth Day

Baidu [China's Google] released a “2012 end of the world” themed campaign for the coming World Earth Day on April 22. Their pitch is “2012 is not scary. What’s scary is that no one saves the planet.”

Note the animal campaigns (scroll down) and the WWF stamp. No ele pic.

Here's the link to the "save the planet" search result page.

Click on it and you will see what happens. It's an interesting effect! Give it a couple seconds. To explore further, see related article in this post.

Clearly, Chinese is going to overtake English as the web’s number one language very soon. At its current rate of growth, that could well happen by mid-2014.... Last year when we looked at languages used on global social media such as Twitter, we noticed the greater prevalence of Japanese, Korean, and Bahasa Indonesia.

Thanks for posting, t&tt - a very impressive rally.
Judging from the photos, a high proportion of young people and some older folks too. Hope we can get a media report in due course.

Yao Ming shoots anti-poaching documentary in Kenya

Yao’s first ever visit to Kenya is a meaningful one, as it will enlist his support in taking the anti-poaching message to his Chinese homeland, where Ivory is a prized commodity.
