Get a ringside view of elephants Wankie and Tembi, as handler, David Marais, walks them through their routine, and keeps score in their elephant-sized game of football played with a giant beach ball.

According to the database, this circus has 6 elephants - Asians Gigi, Jackie and Jasmine (all 58 years old) and Minoti (42).

Africans Wankie and Tembi are 30 years old.

This circus has Chipperfield connections:
"1964: James Boswells son Brian Boswell acted as adviser for Chipperfields Circus on their 1964 tour, and married one of the Chipperfield family, Jane Stockley."

Animal activists storm circus

As almost 800 people jostled to get into the large marquee at the Sun Coast Casino, motorists hooted and waved at the protesters, some of whom carried placards condemning the "slavery and cruelty" of the circus's handling of the animals.

Steve Smit, leader of Animal Rights in Action and one of the people who protested for three hours, said the animals were subjected to "enormous abuse" in the name of entertainment.

Circus charged after elephant abuse video

... a member of the public had taken the cellphone footage during a training session.

It showed how an elephant handler hit Wankie the elephant with a stick or a piece of steel in the face after the elephant appeared to pick up a garden hose with her trunk to drink water.

"We've always suspected this is the case, but this is finally documented proof," said Ainsley Hay from the SPCA.

Further report - note the sneaky attempt by the McLaren Circus spokesman to differentiate between "trainers" and "groomers". Anne also was attacked by a "groom" ...

SPCA to charge Boswell for elephant abuse

The footage, taken in December, aired on Carte Blanche on Sunday night, causing a huge spike of support for the "Boycott Brian Boswell Animal Circus" Facebook page.

Thanks to a member of TEC Facebook for this link - another "isolated" incident ....

Elephant beatings isolated cases - circus

Amateur video footage ... shows one incident in which a handler is running towards an elephant and then whipping the animal, which is seen running away from him.

Another incident shows a handler hitting an elephant, and when one of the staff members in the video was approached by a Carte Blanche team and secretly filmed, he reportedly said that his father had taught him it was necessary to inflict pain to get results when training an elephant ...

Boswell sends elephants home

Wankie and Thembi ...
have been sent back to their base camp just outside Pietermaritzburg.

But this was because of the cold weather in Gauteng where the circus was touring – not public pressure – circus owner Brian Boswell said ... contradicting claims by animal activists.

Thanks to a member of TEC Facebook for drawing attention to this immensely valuable document - it's a must see and a must-read.
This is the Carte Blanche segment that exposed Boswell's Circus to the public.
14 April 2013.
Video and text.

Circus Elephants

"For me the most difficult to watch was that elephant being called over, that elephant being soothed and petted, while all along he [the handler] is planning to beat it. And as that elephant settles down, he receives a smack to the face - a completely unwarranted, uncalled for smack to the face."

via BOYCOTT Brian Boswell's Animal Circus Facebook page:

The Daily News (noelene.barbeau@inl.co.za / DNnews@inl.co.za) ran an article not only on the circus, but on Boswell's zoo in PMB. This article is full of new information (he has THIRTY elephants), allegations from Public Watch ("historically the elephants have travelled with the circus in April and May") and of course, some more CLASSIC quotes from Boswell himself: “There are people who believe animals should not be kept in captivity. People are entitled to believe what they want to but they shouldn’t impose their beliefs on others.”

Dear Boswell, the same could be said of slavery. It is not a "belief" that a lion or elephant does not want to live in a cage or in chains - IT IS A FACT! Your "belief" that animals should be kept in circuses threatens their freedom, and they cannot speak for themselves. It is therefore up to those of us that have the "belief" that all creatures deserve FREEDOM to fight the fight for them.

He also said he "wanted to see the unedited footage before making a decision about the suspended handler." Ummm, IT'S ON YOUTUBE! THERE'S NOTHING MORE TO SEE!

Please direct any comments in letter form (in an informative, non-threatening way if possible) to the journalist covering the story: noelene.barbeau@inl.co.za (cc DNnews@inl.co.za). Please also comment on the story with your views however if you can only do one, please rather email.
