Female elephant braves night-long frost
The female elephant at Marghzar Zoo had to spend a night in the open braving frost as attendants could not chain the male inside the cage on Wednesday. According to sources, the male elephant is tied with two chains (one in each leg) as the female has to share the cage with him at night. On Wednesday, the male elephant’s one chain was untied due to which the female elephant was brought out lest it get harmed. http://www.dawn.com/2011/12/22/female-elep...long-frost.html -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Very disturbing report:
Massive corruption and nepotism threatening Lives of poor elephants at Islamabad Zoo The male elephant nick-named “Kawan” has not been unchained or taken out of his enclosure for the last three months and the poor animal has been standing at one place with heavy shackles tied on all four of his feet ... But the story does not end with Kawan alone. The smaller baby elephant which was brought some three years ago has a gorier story to tell. The young female nick-named “Saheli” has developed gangrene in the right-hind foot and was seen limping in the enclosure virtually waiting for the deadly disease to sweep through the rest of the body causing a possible death in near future. http://www.newspakistan.pk/2012/01/11/Mass...-Islamabad-Zoo/ -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Zoo caretakers consume alcohol bought to 'calm down' elephants
Elephant caretakers at Marghazar Zoo had claimed that they used alcohol to “calm down elephants during their mating season”, but the elephants never consumed any of the alcohol purchased ... Express News also reported saying that the same elephant caretakers were the ones behind Saheli’s death – a 22-year-old elephant gifted by Sri Lanka. http://tribune.com.pk/story/376754/zoo-car...down-elephants/ [For more information about Saheli's life of deprivation at this zoo, please see her topic on our "Elephant Deaths" forum] -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Gifted Sri Lankan Elephant Dies, Another Depressed
According to zookeeper Muhammad Bilal, who was sacked after the death of a female elephant “Saheli” on May 1, said that liquor is given to elephants in order to tame them ... Meanwhile, in the Philippines an appeal has been made to release an elephant gifted by Sri Lanka. Rock music legend, Morrissey last week appealed to Philippines President Benigno Aquino and said that Mali, 37, deserved a reprieve from a lifetime of confinement. http://www.thesundayleader.lk/2012/05/13/g...ther-depressed/ -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Crazy plans - and no mention of any benefits for lone bull elephant KAWAN.
Remodelling of Marghazar Zoo around the corner At present the zoo covers an area of approximately 25 acres and under the remodelling project, the zoo would be extended to 80 acres ... Under remodelling project some 70 animal cages would be constructed in addition to exiting one’s [sic]. http://www.nation.com.pk/pakistan-news-new...ound-the-corner -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Elephant unchained after one year. After around a year, the only elephant of the Marghazar Zoo ‘Kawan’ on Wednesday was unchained by the Mahout (elephant trainer). Kawan spent two hours in a pond especially built for it ... “Unchaining the elephant is a great achievement. Next week we will repeat the exercise, in presence of Chairman CDA. After that CDA will write a letter to Sri Lankan authorities to donate a female elephant,” he said. http://dawn.com/2013/02/21/elephant-unchai...after-one-year/ -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Improving the zoo: Female elephant wanted, preferably for free
The authority will formally request the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Islamabad to donate a female elephant for the only zoo in Islamabad, said an official on Friday. “The civic body will write to the High Commission within the upcoming week to ask for the donation of a female elephant for Marghazar Zoo. A similar request will also be made to South African authorities for the provision of a pair of lions,” CDA Spokesperson Ramzan Sajid confirmed. http://tribune.com.pk/story/514514/improvi...rably-for-free/ -------------------- "They need to move and have stimulation. Marghazar Zoo regains elephant ‘Kavan’ to amuse visitors
ISLAMABAD - The Marghazar Zoo of the federal capital has regained its attraction as male elephant named `Kavan’, previously an aggressive and antisocial animal, has now turned people-friendly and amuses the visitors like her dead female partner. http://www.nation.com.pk/pakistan-news-new...-amuse-visitors -------------------- “We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.”
