Elephant-mahout connections at the World’s First Elephant Hospital

So, I became curious to really understand the intentions of the people who live and work these Elephants. Mahouts and young and upcoming mahouts are the Elephant’s keeper and family. Elephants as a species are smart, strong, and free-willed and I am learning what it takes to earn an Elephant’s trust, especially one that has been exploited in the past. My goal was to observe today without interfering, so I sat down on rain soaked soil amongst the banana trees with my camera, staring and listening to the secret language between an Elephant and its mahout. There is a language barrier between me and the mahouts, which is probably best for them because I am full of questions, but I have learned a way to gain their trust and accept to my presence: I smile. Smiling with Thai people has become my favorite game because, so far, everyone has smiled back, if not first.

Video, with evocative soundtrack, uploaded today by ALLABOUTSONGS

World's First Elephant Hospital - FAE: Why We Do What We Do

This piece of music is attributed to Maksim ... The lyrics are somewhat reminiscent of the dwindling in numbers in elephants population, their habitat and the captivity of elephants including torture, and the need for them to be set free.
..... This land is mine, God gave this land to me,
This great this golden land to me.
And when the morning sun reveals her hills and plains,
I see a land where children can run free. .........

From Michael Wysocki's blog:

FAE: An Elephant Hospital for Elephants

There are a few blessed Elephants that can safely call FAE home; including Motala, Mosha, Ekhe, Auan, and just recently Bobo, that will live out their lives here in the giving hands of FAE staff, down the hill somewhat sheltered from the drama above. As for the rest of the Elephants, their days are full of syringes, injections, antiseptic soaks, enemas, and many other medical practices; balanced out with treats, cleanliness, and affection.

FAE Elephant Hospital is having financial hardships and may have to close in 2012. We are shocked and saddened by this announcement and, consequently, we have developed a two-phase approach to help them.

Phase One: We've launched another IndieGoGo campaign to help ease FAE's immediate needs and we're donating 15% of all donations received directly to the FAE Elephant Hospital.
Phase Two: We will donate a portion of the Film's profits to FAE to ensure that they will be around to help Asian Elephants for decades to come.

Boonmee has been giving great cause for concern.
This week, Soraida has placed her in a harness for the nights to relieve the weight on her feet.

During the day Boonmee prefers to move around or she'll pull the harness so I ask my staff to remove the chain attached to the hoist each morning and see her reaction and it works ...

And on top of this, no more showering. She'll need the soaking of front feet and the spray on the hind legs..wipe her face and her body with damp cloth to keep her body clean but not wet with shower. Bonfires will be lit to keep her warm when it's cold

Update today from Soraida + photo of Boonmee in her harness:

I've asked the staff to take photos during the nights (without flash) when she's asleep to see how she puts her weight on the harness ... She still walks with difficulty but she's more lively ... The wound under her foot is getting drier, we have to keep the floor dry.
