Focus on Burma:

Wild elephants trample rice fields in Pegu Township

Mass timber production in the region, which lies just 50 miles north of Rangoon, has caused severe deforestation, resulting in many wild animals, including elephants, abandoning the forests to search for new habitats closer to villages.

Focus on Chitwan NP, Nepal:

Nepal campaigners plead for killer elephant's life

"The situation has been caused by human failure to manage the elephant correctly. It is therefore our responsibility to find a legal and humane solution."

Side note: Elephant population of Nepal = 300 (quoted in above article).
Human population of Nepal = 30,485,798 (source: World Bank 2011)

Focus on Chitwan NP, Nepal:

Response from Carol Buckley on her Facebook 18 hours ago:

Many of you have asked about the wild bull elephant called Dhrube who made headlines in Chitwan National Park recently. There is much speculation and misinformation circulating, one being that Dhrube is angry because he has been denied access to females. This is untrue and not the reason for his behavior. Unfortunately we are seeing a change in wild elephant behavior in response to the situations they face on a daily basis. In Asia, the human population is dense. Villages have taken over land that once was home to many different species of wildlife, including elephants. The continual stress of close encounters with humans has resulted in a heightened aggression on the part of some elephants ...

This article is dated 12 January 2013, but Dhrube (see previous 2 posts here) is mentioned in it, so I am posting a link to it here as well as on the topic for Elephant/Human conflict 2013.

Focus on Chitwan, Nepal:

Tusker kills elderly in Chitwan

... the infamous elehpant Dhurbhe might not have involvement in the killing ...

"Dhurbhe doesn´t roam around this area," said Poudel. "Another tusker locally named Ronaldo has been found wandering in Sauraha and Khorsar area ..."
