5-year-old ABQ BioPark elephant dies from virus

The BioPark news release points out, the other members of the zooís elephant herd are not in danger however, 19-month-old calf Jazmine is under close watch by zookeepers.

Checking the asianelephant.net database, I see that DAIZY's father is ALBERT (16) and JAZMINE's father is SAMSON (17).
Both bulls were born at African Lion Safari.

The zoo ought to stop being "devastated" (paragraph 8 on the kob.com link) and do the right thing - stop the breeding!

"They need to move and have stimulation. They need to be browsing, foraging, socialising. They need to have reason for movement." Pat Derby, PAWS, on elephants' needs.

"What surprises me the most is the number of zoo veterinarians and zoo keepers that continue to visit Sauraha but never helped to get these elephants off chains. Seem unconscionable to me."
