Praying for the little one ...

“We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.”

2 posts on DSWT Twitter, the latest one with a photo of the calf being comforted:

Team just landed at Wilson airport with rescued bull elephant on board.

He's been alone for 3 days, had his tail bitten off by a hyaena, but now he is safe at our Nairobi Nursery

Latest news from DSWT Facebook:

The newly rescued orphan elephant has arrived at the Nairobi Nursery. We estimate him to be about 2 years of age. He has sadly lost his tail, which we suspect was been bitten off by a Hyaena.

He has taken on some fluids and Mishak, one of the keepers, has encouraged him to drink some milk. These are positive signs, however, as with all new arrivals, the first few weeks are always particularly high risk, and we will be monitoring him very closely.

With this latest rescue, our numbers in the orphanage have risen to 18 elephants and 2 black rhinos. Caring for them is a massive challenge and we welcome any donations in respect of this work, thank you.

Latest arrival has been named KANJORO after the lugga he was taking refuge in before he was rescued.

Orphan profile for KANJORO online now:

Scout Loponu spent the next two days diligently watching the elephant, and ascertained that it was obviously an orphan, since it made little attempt to join up with passing wild elephant herds, and nor did the wild elephants make any attempt at contact with him.. The baby was visibly extremely fearful, most of its tail already having been bitten off by predators. It spent much of its time hiding in thick cover, obviously terrified of a further predator attack.

From DSWT Faceook today - short report and 5 photos.

Kanjoro's first morning out with the other Nursery Orphans

At 6am on Tuesday 27th March, Kanjoro joined the other Nursery elephants for a full day out in the bush. Rescued only one week ago, Kanjoro has made good progress in the care of the DSWT, helped all the way by the keepers and the other orphans.

New photo from DSWT Facebook:

Newly-rescued Kanjoro is making excellent progress in our care at the DSWT.

This photograph shows him happily being splashed by the water hose, which the elephants love.
