Shame on the film-makers for helping the Little Rock Zoo exploit Jewell.

So disappointing that they partnered with one of the worst zoos in the US to exploit Jewell :(

Letter in response to my tweet about my concern for Jewell ...

An Open Letter to the Elephant Community

Dear “Ele-Friends”,

We received a public tweet from a fellow elephant lover today that I felt deserved a public response. I have replied to her directly, but I think it’s a worthy conversation for the Elephant Community at large, so I have posted it here as an open letter. We look forward to hearing your comments and if you can join us at the Little Rock Film Festival on either May 30th or June 1st, please give us an “Ele-Friend” shout out

Thank you for speaking up about this SL. I share your feelings of disappointment and find the exploitation of Jewell for this movie unconscionable. I have tried numerous times to post a response to the producer's "open letter" but only encounter a dead link.

I found Ms. Borman's response naive and patronizing. It's a sad day when "invisible" forms of abuse are denied, rationalized, and used as tools to exploit more elephants. The science on toxic stress and compromised elephant welfare in zoos and circuses is undeniable at this point. This message board is filled with references. I hope Ms. Borman will take the time to educate herself.

Ms. Borman stated: "On a side note, as activists, I think it is dangerous if we only speak to the people that are already on our side because we won’t make very much progress that way." I am particularly offended by this comment. It is patronizing and ignorant. Her inability to see YOUR point is "dangerous." But she is a filmmaker and her priority is her film. An "activist" with an investment.

Thank YOU for not being a silent bystander, for bearing witness for Jewell, and for your tireless full-time, decades-long, uncompromised advocacy on behalf of ALL elephants around the world.

Thank you t&tt. Interesting that you are not able to comment on her page. I guess she really doesn't want a "debate." Very sad.

Hi, "Ele-Friends"! Several people have asked how it went in Arkansas. We had 2 great screenings and very engaged audiences. I'm still planning to write a blog post about Jewell, the elephant at the zoo with the orthotic, but I'm waiting for some info from the orthotics company. As soon as I get that, I'll post the official blog post for everyone to see. Thanks so much and we look forward to announcing more good news soon. Cheers! -Windy Borman, Director/Producer, "The Eyes of Thailand"

Asian Elephant Jewell walks better thanks to an orthotic boot

The Elephant Community was a-twitter with questions prior to and following the recent screening of “The Eyes of Thailand” documentary at the Little Rock Film Festival.

“The Eyes of Thailand” tells the true and inspirational story of one woman’s quest to help two elephants walk again after losing their legs in landmine accidents. Treating their wounds was only part of the journey; building elephant-sized prosthetics was another.
