Tourism Ministry to maintain existing promotions

Dr Ng also said the centre's efforts to rescue and protect elephants should be made known internationally.

“This centre is not a zoo but we still want visitors to leave with an unforgettable experience and return with their friends,” she said.

She added that 682 elephants had been rescued since the centre was established in 1989.

The centre is currently home to 27 elephants, which were rescued nationwide.

Teaching elephants new tricks


After spending eight years at the sanctuary, Suri's job now includes turning wild elephants into denak or elephant guides, which are used in elephant translocation operations.

Speaking to the New Straits Times, Suri said teaching tricks to a baby elephant was more fun compared with the hours spent with the adult animals.
