Smile for the Camera! The Japanese Whaling Fleet is Intercepted by Spy Drones on Christmas Day

The Sea Shepherd crew has intercepted the Japanese whaling fleet on Christmas Day, a thousand miles north of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

The Sea Shepherd ship, Steve Irwin, deployed a drone to successfully locate and photograph the Japanese factory ship Nisshin Maru on December 24th. Once the pursuit began, three Japanese harpoon/security ships moved in on the Steve Irwin to shield the Nisshin Maru to allow it to escape.

Stricken Brigitte Bardot docks in Fremantle

Mr Ager also revealed the Sea Shepherd vessels were followed by a Japanese escort ship the Shonan Maru, which they now believe is about 15 miles off Rottnest Island.

"They came in for a close look, when we had to refuel," Mr Ager said.

"It was a dangerous situation, we were paralysed, we're trying to take on fuel, we can't go anywhere.

"There was a bit of a moment there where we were wondering what was going to happen."

Mr Ager said he could see Japanese crew members taking photos from the tower of the Shonan Maru, but was unable to see if they were armed.

The Sea Shepherd vessel the Bob Barker remains in the Antarctic. The Japanese whaling ships are yet to make any kills this season.
