Clatsop County circus opponents get their wish – a vote in May

For what may have been the last time, a small group of animal rights activists descended upon the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday with pleas to place a referendum on the May ballot that, if approved by voters, would ban circuses and other exotic animal exhibitions.

Commissioners unanimously voted to put the ordinance on the ballot, but not before animal rights activists could make one final appeal to nix all future circuses featuring animals.

Feld Entertainment ... said in a letter to the commission that the company's elephant management practices are in line with federal guidelines.

If that's the case, then there's something seriously wrong with federal guidelines.

Clatsop County residents to vote on whether to allow circuses that display elephants, other exotic animals

The next time the circus says it's coming to town, Clatsop County may just say no.

Next month, voters in the coastal county anchored by tourism and fishing will decide on a ballot measure that would ban the display of elephants and other exotic animals in circuses and similar events.

"Basically, we're supporting this measure in part because we think it is everyone's responsibility to minimize suffering for any being," said Bob Adams, a landscape photographer. "Also, we support it because we think that allowing this kind of cruelty degrades every member of the community. There is something deeply sad making entertainment out of taking feeling and intelligent creatures from their home."

Thanks to In Defense of Elephants for brining this sad news to our attention:

The measure, which would have been the first of its kind in Oregon, sought to ban the display of elephants and other exotic animals in circuses and similar events ...
