Finding that her new found magical prowess surpassed that of most mortal men, and aided by her half-divine progeny, Calaesa the Soulsinger was able to live far longer than her fellows. However, all must one day fall, and the greatest Sorceress in recorded memory chose to do so in a small, green hamlet on the southern coast of the Bay of Kadarain, living her last days in quiet anonymity among the simple peasant folk.

In 465 AAV, on the day of her passing, her three children drew to her side. After lamenting their mother's passing, each child called from the earth a massive pillar, one from stone, one from wood, and one from nevermelting ice. The pillars, collectively known as the Succeo Tumbus, form a triangle in a clearing a short distance away from the village where Calaesa was interred. The three children then cast a great enchantment over the pillars, permanently preserving the clearing in pristine form. Over the millenia, the village endured pestilence, famine, torrential rain, and a devastating forest fire that left the area a barren, charred wasteland for nearly 300 years. Yet through it all, the sacred glade remained green and untouched.

Men with darkness in their hearts found themselves unable to enter. The enchantment ensured protection for those buried within, but only for those with the purest hearts could be interred. The bodies of the unworthy simply could not be carried in, stopping at the boundaries of the clearing as if encountering a marble wall. Over the centuries, the spot attracted thousands of bereaved, hoping to bury their loved ones under the protective influence of the Succeo Tumbus. Inevitably, many of the pallbearers made great pilgrimage only to be laid low by the Judgment of the Pillars. Rather than return home, most of these simply bury their dearly departed somewhere close by.

Over the millenia, the village has become home to some of the most massive and ornate cemeteries, graveyards, tombs and mausoleums in Avalor. The village, named Chælroth after the erection of the Succeo Tumbus, has become a small city, sometimes half-jokingly called the Necropolis, as its dead residents outnumber the living approximately four hundred to one. It has become a magnet for Necromancers and other practitioners of the darker arts, and this fact in combination with the sheer number of corpses in and around the idyllic, green village have led to an unusually high degree of undead activity. In 2349 AAV, an elite corps of White Magi known as the Order of The Sun was established to effectively combat the undead. The Order is exceedingly good at its job, and have obtained semi-celebrity status throughout Avalor for their unrelenting efficiency at driving back the dead. The Order also serves as the local police force; you don't have to be a corpse to appreciate the disciplinary nature of a quarterstaff.
