I.C. InformationName:Nathan Thomas Hargreaves
Age:25 {born may 3rd}
Gender:Male
Nationality:Nathan was born and raised on Earth. He lived there most of his life before NOMAD except for some placement work on various orbiting bodies for research during his post graduate work. He was born in Ontario before moving to Chicago with his family when he was a child. He still feels that Earth is his home but his mind was always in the stars.
Occupation: Nathan is a highly qualified planetary and ore geologist. He got his degree in chogaco where he achieved a first level degree and then went on to do post graduate work, speicalising in planetary planets and the ores found in orbiting bodies with plate tectonics. Once qualified he got his first job working on board Deep Six where he is the head geologist in a team responsible for mining the planets they find.
He is a vastly intelligent scientist, though maybe a little too keen, and his main skill is how naturally his knowledge of the planets they find comes to him. A natural born geologist for sure!
Personality: Nathan's main personality quirk is his dorkiness about his area of work. He is a bit of a hardcore geology fan and can't seem to stop himself rattling off 'interesting facts' to people about his specialist subject. He is a bit too keen with it and it can come across as a bit frustrating for other people. Seeing as how he is just out of his education it is still fresh and exciting for him and that bubbles over to everyone else.
He is also a bit of a sceptic when it comes to things that aren't 'set in stone' (if you mind the pun!). He likes good hard scientific facts and things like ghosts, aliens and 'fate' just don't fly with him. If something isn't in the geological record then it didn't happen. Plain as. He is also very naive in many ways, he puts so much of himself into his work that he isn't too tuned into the ways of the worlds. He is very much still learning about how to conduct a good social life and more specifically a love life. Right now he is still bright eyed and bushy tailed and there is a definite air of innocence about him.
Other than these glaringly obvious bad points, Nathan has many good points aswell. He is an excellent listener and thrives on just letting people let things out, even if he doesn't know what advice to give them. He is also a very compassionate guy and is generous with all he has. Sometimes he can be a little too much the good samaritan though and it leads him to be taken advantage of but that is part of his naivity again. He has studied in some areas of physics and chemistry too so if you ever have a science problem, he is the guy to go to.
He does have a sense of humour though it can often just be simple light hearted things and often it's jokes that only fellow scientists will get. He also has a rather romantic side locked away inside though he hasn't taken his eyes away from the rocks long enough to even notice a lady to take that out on. Maybe now that they are in the middle of nowhere and there are no rocks to look at he will get his chance.
Physical Appearance:
Nathan is a tall guy, built quite lean so he is strong but not very over powering in stature. Under his clothes he may look toned and healthy but with his demeanour being hunched over microscopes and maps and his arms often being folded across his body as a defensive display because of his lack of confidence with most people you could mistake him for being quite weedy.
His hair is dark chocolate brown, it isn't black but when wet or in dull light it can look it. It is worn quite shabby and he doesn't really keep himself too neat, mostly because he is either researching in his lab or out 'in the field'. Facial hair is normally some stage of stubble though when he gets round to it and shaves he can look somewhere close to clean cut. His skin is an olive tone because of the Italian roots in his family, pretty much blemish free, though if he has been working in his dark rooms for too long without sleep his eyes look tired and get black circles under them.
His eyes are large, brown and expressive. They display the innocence he so obviously has and also they are often wide with excitement when he is discussing areas he knows about. They really do mirror his emotions so he can never lie well about how he is feeling.
Medical:Nathan, when at school got himself a re-occuring injury in his knee which developed to him damaging his anterior crutiate ligament and had to go through surgery to haveit reconstructed and have his cartilidge repaired. He now has a large scar down the front of his knee and it can stiffen up from time to time but he tries to keep it as limber as he can. He also has minor things such as hayfever and acid reflux disorder. When he has been spending too much time typing up reports the repetetive strain gives him acute tendonitis in his wrist/up his thumb which can be debilitatingly painful for a few days.
History: Nathan was born in Ontario with his already 5 children strong family. Forever to take on the baby of the family role, he was doted on and given the things he wanted. They weren't rich but they were comfortable enough to keep all 6 children happy and have a nice house. Moving with his fathers work they changed scenery to Chicago in the U.S. He was young enough not to notice the move and also young enough to pick up that accent and not the canadian of his parents and elder siblings.
He was a good kid at school and studied well. It was clear he was going to be a bright person because he seemed to be picking things up quite well and was in the top sections of each area of the class. The one he couldn't ever get the hang of was PE. He was skinny and short and would rather be reading a book about dinosaurs. When it got to his 13th birthday and he got his 'special' birthday present for becoming a teenager he asked for tools to dig up dinosaurs and his parents got it gladly. There weren't many places on Earth that hadn't been looked through for dinosaurs and other such things but they wanted to humour his enthusiasm.
Through school he took to the sciences like a duck to water and even though it got him bullied for being a geek he didn't seem to mind too much. He got his head stuck into science when others worried about the politics of the world around them. Near the end of school he found himself getting more interested in all the space programmes too and wanted to visit the other planets that people were living on. He was still stuck on the first rock that had life and he wanted more.
Getting into university he started off wanted to do the palaeontology side of his geology degree but soon found his niche as the planetary geology courses and the ore courses. He was facinated by the other planets moons and other orbiting bodies that had a geology as interesting as Earths. He got through his degree with flying colours and then went on to do a post graduate course specialising in his favourite area. during this time he got to go out and do some fieldwork on these other planets and each time he came back he was raving to his parents. They didn't really understand all the 'rocks and shit' that he was into but they encouraged his eagerness.
Once through with University he was chomping at the bit to get himself a job and through the career links at his University he got the information for Deep Six mission and the place he could have heading the mining team onboard. Getting to explore space and study the prospects for mining and economic minerals was just too good to be true and so he sorted out all his details to be sent on and, naturally as he was well qualified for the post, he was taken on and became part of the crew. Since being with them he has found many interesting places to mine and has been commended on his accuracy at finding the things that are worth something. He does annoy the other crew members at times with his over enthusiasm for 'stones' but he remains quite oblivious.
With the current situation though, he will now find himself completely and utterly useless!
Other:Roleplay Sample: Nathan was sitting in what was mostly a dark room. The only light coming from within was a small light inside the microscope he was looking through. They had just received a fresh sweep of samples from their current destination and now Nathan was looking with such precision anyone else would just give up. There was evidence of plate tectonics on this moon and it had excited Nathn to no end. Now all he had to do was spend all of his time (including time that should be spend eating and sleeping) looking through samples taken from areas where he felt sure to find things that were economically viable to mine.
He had to get these things right otherwise they would end up putting in a lot of time effort and moeny into mining an area that ended up having nothing much in it at all and that waste would be on his head. He lifted his head and furrowed his brows, damn this microscope work was murder on the eyes. He lifted on hand to pinch at the bridge of his nose and he closed his eyes for a moment. Once opened it took him a second to let his eyes adjust again and then he leanded forward and started looking once more. Nothing he had looked at so far had anything of real interest. There was potential for all kinds of economic minerals, including metals, which would hopefully please the people in charge as it would be worth a lot of cash.
Getting frustrated with the rocks and himself he took out the slide and placed it on the table and spun his chair around. Maybe he should drink coffee, it would probably do him well to stay alert whilst doing this in the dark, he often got himself tired. A dark figure appeared in the doorway and held out a small box.
"Professor Hargreaves, these are the next batch of thin sections from the sweep. Do you want to get someone else to look at them or...?" Nathan had already started waving his hadn in protest and he turned on a lamp beside him to flood the room with a dull ligh.
"No, no just give them to me. Otherwise I would have to give a brief of what I have found so far and the locations of them." He held out his hand and took hold of the box, opening it on the table.
He took a few out and held them to the light to see through them. They were made up of slices of rock that were 0.003 millimeters thick and so could easily be seen through, most of the time. After a moment the other person shifted their weight awkwardly,
"Um, Professor, maybe it would be best though, I mean you have been in here for days and I'm not sure you have left at all to sleep or.." Nathan gave him a rather abrupt look which seemed to stop the guy in his tracks.
"Look, I'm fine. Once I find if this has anything of interest I can then either instruct a proper dig in this area or map out the next area for a sample sweep, then I can rest." He went back to looking at the samples and he picked one up that that a large black sparkling crack through it. He quickly picked up another and held them together next to the light.
"You know what, I think I may just have found my answer. Tell the guys i think I've got some minerals and to stand by, if there seems to be enough of this I want to go where they were taken from. We may have just found where the money is!"
