International relations change forever War shows the modern world the potential destructive capabilities of technology - 1918 - The First World War ends with the signing of the armistice 11/11 @ 11am Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates the throne and flees to the Netherlands - 1939 - Hitler’s Nazi Germany invades Poland, the catalyst for World War Two - 1945 - Hitler commits suicide (supposedly) and Germany surrenders to the allies on May 7th After the first atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan surrenders on August 14th - 1947 to 1991 - Events during this period of post-war tensions between Russia and the USA are referred to as the cold war Aside from the ‘Proxy wars’ all other military conflict is denied - 2000 - Tensions between Israel and Palestine resurface, conflict between Palestinian terrorists and Israeli Military forces escalates over the course of the next seven years - 2001 - Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) is launched by a western military coalition to seize control of assets and personnel assisting eastern terrorist organizations in Afghanistan - 2002 - International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is established by the international community. NATO assumed control of ISAF the following year. By May 2008, ISAF had an estimated 47,000 troops from 40 countries, with NATO members providing the core of the force - 2003 - Western military assets invade Iraq under the guise of a coalition enforcing UN laws and sanctions on WMD development and human rights violations - 2004 - Western occupation of Iraq begins to shift towards a long term military presence The real reason – preservation of western oil supplies and economic security – becomes clear - 2006 - Israel invades & blockades Lebanon after terrorists seize military personnel and target civilians in Israel. The resulting conflict causes the deaths of over 2000 Lebanese civilians and militia. - 2012 - America deploys the preliminary ‘Future Soldier’ program, making soldiers more durable, survivable, lethal and informed. Other western nations soon follow suit - 2025 - A secret joint venture between American and British organizations puts the first permanent presence on the moon. America and Britain declare the moon coalition territory - 2029 - A Russian venture places the second permanent presence on the moon. No information concerning either off-world base of operations is divulged to the global population - 2030 - The first violent clashes over mineral resources and launch / landing sites on the moon occur. The world sees nothing - 2034 - The United Nations space program finally catches up and establishes the first multi-lingual operational base. A ceasefire is brokered by UN officials, dividing the surface of the moon evenly between all three parties - 2035 - The race for Mars begins - 2036 to 2267 - Several minor, unmanned spacecraft make successful return journeys to and from other planetary bodies within the solar system. Research on extra-terran habitation, exploration, colonization, mining and warfare continues Diplomatic relations improve between the three parties occupying the moon - 2268 - After massive political and economic efforts, the first colonial mission to mars is launched aboard the ‘Intrepid’ – and international colonization vessel destined to set up the first and permanent human presence on Mars. The voyage takes less than two months - 2269 - Western coalition colonists arrive on the surface of mars on new years day, taking their first steps on the red planet in the opening hours of the new year. The televised landings anger and frustrate China, who now feel cheated out of their rightful territory on the moon and Mars - 2270 - Western military assets directly prevent Chinese attempts at any moon landing. Western nations officially declare Mars UN territory to be policed by NATO forces - 2271 - A Chinese rocket it shot down over the ocean. China demands to know who or what is responsible, and the USA reveals the existence of a number of armed orbital stations. Other western nations reveal the same information to the east - 2273 - After western – eastern diplomatic relations collapse, eastern nations begin the formation of an ‘eastern coalition’ of sorts This ragtag band of outcast nations (as they have so branded themselves) attempt to begin a social and economic break from the west - 2274 to 2371 - Eastern and western relations deteriorate further The colony on Mars grows considerably – atmospheric processors are set up to begin the process of terraforming the red planet Technology advances leaps and bounds due to the international focus on space and discovery, and competition fuelled by east-west tensions - 2372 - Israel, with the support of the United States, invades and levels the infrastructure of Pakistan after negotiations collapse once more and terrorists detonate a minor nuclear device within Israeli territory Hundreds of thousands are killed - casualties are heavier on the Pakistani side - 2373 - After long condemnation of the actions of western governments in the Pakistan – Israel incident, eastern nations cease all trade, communication and negotiation with western nations - 2374 - A sudden, surprise assault on western military assets in eastern nations begins. The first area to see heavy western losses is Iraq, where a strong western military presence still remained As the nature of the threat is assessed by the western coalition it is determined that a centralized government and military is required in order to effectively combat the organized eastern military strikes - 2375 - The United Earth Coalition (UEC) is formed by the western coalition, providing a representative, centralized government and military to defend the west. Western military assets continue to retreat as the newly formed UEC military organizes and begins to consolidate and defend crucial positions. - 2376 to 2396 - Heavy fighting claims millions of lives across the globe, in a war that has lasted for 23 years. Decisive action is needed - 2397 - UEC military forces begin sudden, rapid deployment of radiation clean fusion warheads, using armed orbital stations as a defence against eastern retaliation. The relatively new technology proves to be a success Much of the Earth’s surface is reduced to dust and ash – billons are killed The nations of the Eastern Coalition formally surrender The UEC rounds up and televises the execution of Eastern political officials and military leaders Easterners become a hated minority - 2400 - The cleanup begins in earnest, as the UEC takes erased eastern territories as UEC land, leaving each member nation their own, original land to govern as they see fit, within UEC regulations. - 2407 - With the global situation uneasy but militarily stable (more so than ever before) the UEC turns its attention to the stars to look for new colonies, resources and technological developments - 2409 - The DsECV program is created by the UEC, with massive amounts of raw materials, credits and manpower going into the production of the first DsECV ‘ Pioneer ’ - 2424 - With the entire focus of the UEC’s industrial might behind the project, the Pioneer is built, crewed and launched within fifteen years The economic, social, colonial and technological advantages and returns from the DsECV are initially slow to emerge, but in a number of years the influence, size and economic and industrial strength of the UEC increase considerably. - 2425 - Five more DsECV’s are commissioned :- Journey, Discovery, Ranger, Beacon and Nomad - 2426 to present (2657) - Mankind expands over 200 light years outwards from their home system – Sol, without encountering any unexpected turn of events The environmental state of Earth declines as the growing population and industrial production places a strain upon the social and environmental balance Hundreds of colonies, orbital stations, mining operations, research stations and prisons are established amongst the stars. -------------------- Matt - All things in moderation, especially moderation.
