Molavar was very similar to Tatooine, a backwater desert planet with seedy spaceports and hard working moisture farmers. It was located on the junction between the Manda Merchant Route and what was best known as the Hutt Highway. Yet even such an opportune placement did little to improve the planet. It was the type of place you stopped at only for necessity, and then quickly moved on.

Saul spared a mere second of thought at what might be the cause for such a dull fate, but quickly realized he'd better keep his mind on the matter at hand. Sitting before him under a large cream colored pavillion was Alex Skywalker, the leader of the Paladin Jedi.

Shifting in his armored shell, Saul was thankful that there was a good breeze today. Even under the sheltering shade of the pavillion, the heat could have been tormenting. "So Master Skywalker, a little Hapan birdie brought me hear today, to what do I owe the pleasure?"

Alex was about to open his mouth when beside him Jag’s wrist holocom let out a veritable squeal. It startled Jag who’d definitely been lost in how distasteful he was feeling about forming an alliance with a Hutt – even one as relatively benign as Saul.

“This better be really important, Spectre.” Jag snapped, trying for sotto voce but not quite managing it.

“Are Mandos at Dak important enough for you?” The droid replied and that brought Alex’s attention right around.

“Excuse us a moment, Mighty Saul, but this is pertinent to our discussion.” Alex addressed the self-styled Hutt emperor and waited for Saul’s magnanimous acquiescence before proceeding.

“Patch it through, Spectre.” Jag ordered and the miniature figure of Master Barris materialized.

Grandmaster, I’m sorry to report that COS Sarris has sent Mandolorians to Dak. Kiera sensed them, and I can confirm that. I believe the best course of action is to remove our presence from Dak to avoid any precipitous involvement here.

Jag’s stomach lurched at the idea of the Phoenix trying to outrun even a few Besu’lik. But before he could protest the idea, Alex was already ahead of him.

“Master Barris, that would probably only precipitate what you are attempting to prevent. In light of the alliance, the Mon Calamari would no doubt open fire on the Mandolorian ships. We must delay until we are ready to announce the alliance. I’m afraid for the time being you need to lie low on Dak.”

That was hardly the response Jag was looking for. Hang this Hutt alliance. He wanted to leave for Dak now. It was his wife, his unborn child and his ship after all that was caught in the Mando crosshairs. Jag opened his mouth and again he was caught off, this time by Saul.

“Grandmaster Skywalker, let us not mince words here. You are in sore need of allies – more than just the Mon Calamari and the Hapans. And allying with me is only logical. Look at the galactic map.”

And with that it hit Jag exactly why Alex Skywalker was seeking out this alliance – well, at least one of the reasons anyway. Jedi never did anything simple in Jag’s experience. Grandmasters were probably even more complicated than the norm.

“Balance, Grandmaster, this galaxy needs balance.” Saul stated and something passed between the Hutt emperor and the Paladin grandmaster. Jag could see it, but it was over his head. All he could do was trust Alex Skywalker.

“I support alliances, Saul. The Paladin Order is not seeking a new government to be subject to.” Alex replied.

“Understood. As long as you understand the trade routes belong to everyone; not just Coruscant.”

“Agreed.” Alex nodded and Saul the Hutt smiled.

“I think we understand each other, Grandmaster. And now I believe I will send ships to Dak for support. However much you want to circumvent it, that battle is going to happen, and I believe this may be for the best. You have already made Sarris wary with your victory in the Maze. Overwhelm Sarris' forces at Dak, and you may just bring her to the bargaining table. If not, she will think twice about attacking the combined forces of the Mon Calamari, the Hapans and the Hutts.”

“And the Paladins.”

“Ah yes. I had heard you possess a rather extraordinary ship. I look forward to seeing it.”

After concluding a few minor details, such as how they would contact each other, and what their first few moves as 'allies' might be, Saul, Alex, and Jag departed on good terms and with high spirits. Once Saul was back in the comfort of his own ship, he realized that things were about to get very complicated.

As it stood, he was allies with the Mandalorians and the Paladin Jedi. Currently there was also a war going on between the Paladins and the GA who not only had the backing of the Loyalist Jedi, but also the employment of the Mandalorians.

Technically Saul was now at war with himself.

Slithering into a private meeting room, Saul locked the doors and established a holofeed to the Mandalore. Several minutes later, he got a response.

"Saul, to what do I owe the pleasure?"

Saul wished he wasn't covered head to tail in armor, he would have liked the Mandalore to see his displeasure. "Ixtren, I have something very important to discuss. Is this a good time?"

Ixtren's holoimage spared a glance backward, then nodded yes.

"First off, you had informed me that this little merc job you are doing for the GA would not interfere with our alliance, that this was simply business and nothing political."

"That's right. The Mandalorians send some mercs and ships to do a few odd and end jobs for Sariss, and in turn she's going to turn a blind eye to our fleet."

"Yes, yes. Well...I'm just going to be blunt. I just allied the Hutt Empire with the Paladin Jedi, Alex Skywalker specifically."

Ixtren was silent.

Now Saul wished the Mandalore didn't wear armor either.

Finally Ixtren broke the silence. "This is definitely complicated."

"Indeed." Saul purred. "The way I see it, the Jedi have a long track record of ending up on the wining side. And though the Loyalists are currently sided with the GA, this is turning more and more into a GA vs Jedi war. At least that is how the holonews is playing it. I, for one, would like to be on the wining side."

Surprisingly, Ixtren paused a moment to pull off his helmet. His face looked worried. "Look Saul, this..." His face changed, the look of worry dissolving into one of comprehension and then amusement. "...you're way ahead of me, aren't you?"

Saul smiled. If only it were as easy to remove his helmet, he would have shared his mirth. "I'm glad you're catching on. However, I did not ally with the Paladins in order to manipulate them. When I gave them my alliance, that was now petty lip service."

"No. You aren't...you're telling me..."

The Hutt laughed. "Precisely. When I allied with the Paladins, I had no intent of doublecrossing or harming them. What I didn't tell them was that they were now secretly allied with the Mandalorians."

Now it was Ixtren's turn to laugh. "You're one crazy barve, Saul. But I don't think the COS is going to let me off the hook that easy."

"No, if what you tell me about her is correct, she won't. She won't know that you're feeding the enemy with inside intel, that your troops aren't giving it their usual 110%, and that the Hutts and the Mandalorians are going to help engineer this war so that the Paladins win."

"Good guy, bad guy. I think I can do that. It'll be tricky, but it's doable, and the payoff would be well worth the expense." He thought of Sasha and her current mission on Dak. "Hmm, speaking of expense, I've got a team on Dak right now that's going to be attacking some Paladins. I was planning on telling Sariss that the Paladins are trying to assassinate Kas Haan...again. Thought it would stir her up. Sound good? Or do you think it needs some tweaking?"

"It's too late to cancel the operation, isn't it?" Saul's voice was tinged with regret.

"Sorry Saul, but I had this planned before I knew I was attacking my secret allies."

"Poodoo." There was nothing he could do about it now. "What sort of operation was this?"

"Ten commandos. I don't know the specifics. It helps to play by ear in order to fool the Force."

"Ten." Saul mumbled. "How many Paladins do you suspect they will encounter?"

"More than two."

Some hope sprang into Saul's voice. "Well, then there should be no problem at all. Three or more Jedi should easily be able to fend off ten Mandalorians." Ixtren's face turned into a scowl. "I meant no insult Mandalore," Saul faked innocence, "but the odds are certainly in there favor. Now," his voice shifted into a more serious tone, "when the Paladins escape and you make your report to Sariss, she will be certain to retaliate against Dak. At the very least she will send ships there to escort Kas Haan to another world. Meanwhile you can pull your troops away from the Rishi Maze and let the Paladins slip out..."

Ixtren listened. Before long they had a plan.

"All right Saul, I'll let you know how things go. Oh, and thanks for those ships."

Saul nodded and the transmission ended. Now he had work to do.

“Jagged, program the coordinates for Dac into the navicomputer.” Alex Skywalker calmly ordered, and Jag’s head swiveled around in alarm.

“What’s going on there?”

“Just a minor skirmish; a ten-commando Mandolorian unit. Nothing the Jedi can’t handle.” Alex replied in a casual way, but it wasn’t casual to Jag. Ignoring Jag’s anxiety for the moment, Skywalker contacted the Paladin moon outpost just inside the Rishi Maze. “Well that’s certainly interesting.” He commented after he shut down the private link.

“What is?” Jag asked, hoping it wasn’t more bad news.

“The Mandolorian ships have withdrawn from the Rishi Maze.”

“They’re gone? Do you think they’re heading to Dac to reinforce the attack?”

“No, Jag, they are not. Trust me. And stop thinking with your emotions.” Alex put a calming hand on Jag’s shoulder and even though he should have been annoyed that the Jedi was using the Force on him, Jag wasn’t. He didn’t like the anxiety for Kiera he felt rising in him, an entirely new anxiety brought on by an entirely new development. Was it going to be like this for the next few months? If it was, Jag was going to surround himself with Paladins to keep him calm.

Everything passing through his mind must have registered on the grandmaster because Alex was smiling at him with amused understanding.

“I felt the same, Jag. I wanted to lock Ziara inside the temple for the entire nine months. Instead I had to trust her. Trust Kiera.”

Jag nodded at Alex’s good advice, but it wasn’t the same thing. There was that Jedi bond thing.

But Kiera and I have a bond. I just need to reach out to her.

Not even sure if he was doing it right, for he was as blind as a rock to the Force, Jag focused his mind on Kiera. He turned Alex with a grin.

“Boy is she ticked off. I never thought I’d say it, but I may just be feeling sorry for some Mandos about now.”

“Mother’s protective instinct.” Alex nodded sagely and kept the rest of his thoughts to himself. That Jag/Kiera bond was so puzzling because it shouldn’t have been there – but it was. Alex was quite certain that when he caught up with his little pregnant paladin knight he was going to sense a renewed centeredness in the Force in Kiera; probably a stronger one at that. And it had everything to do with Jag’s reappearance.

Just then the navicomputer alert sounded. Jag engaged the hyperdrive and the ship jumped into hyperspace on its journey to Dac.
