So guys, due to SOPA/PIPA and the horrificus time we have had with server 13 on IF we are making the move to MyBB.

Cad and I, poor as we are, cannot afford to host the forum ourselves. However, we have found someone kind and willing to do it for us!

Enter Ash - or Ashkir for those who are also members of RPGD - who is not only offering us free webspace but is also moving this entire IF forum onto the new webspace and with the MyBB software!

I have posted a quote from him further down outlining the process and whatnot and assure you we as a staff have the same questions you do! Please ask in this topic and don't be afraid to PM us either.

Also can y'all vote on the domain name? Just say in this topic which you prefer:

Don't visit a nonexistant website name that we might use in case of DNS issues.

Any donations to help pay for the domain name are welcomed! Everything else is free though, Ash is hosting it all for free.

The main difference and reason for the move is that with Ash we can back up the forum ourselves (have access to cPanel) - something we do not have with IF - and we can have a 3-3-3 rating.

Added note: we will be turning to board offline while the 'scan' and move take place. When we turn it online only the announcements forum will be visible and you guys can access your PM's and get your new passwords. Any questions can be asked here as well.

I like the fact it is shorter, however for google wouldn't having Thedas in the url be helpful? More people looking for DA stuff finding it and all that?

That's true. Could always have the chroniclesofthedas.com etc or something, then use a domain thingy for a shorter one for advertising and that shit.

While this is far from a definite stake in the heart, it does mean that Congress will shut up about the whole issue for a few years at least, and focus on one of the other eleventy billion problems facing the nation. It's an old cycle. Once something gets loud enough, ESPECIALLY during an election year, that shit will get canned quickly.

Regardless, IF are finicky about content and rumours of boards getting deleted is enough for me to not want to take any chances. Change is not always bad either! The new skin may take some time to sort (IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO SKIN FOR MYBB PLEASE HELP?!!!) but the new mods and safety of a private server and someone we can contact if anything goes wrong (like it did with the PM's) outweigh the positives of IF. If indeed there are any left. :P

And Mia, both of those acts are on hold in Congress. Like Gwyle said, this pretty much means that they will sit for a few years, other stuff will be focused on as the real problems are ignored, and so on and so forth. Business as usual.

The effects of these bills are not just the legislation, its the way hosts like IF act as well. I do not want this board deleted. Maybe I am being paranoid, but we always intended on eventually hosting ourselves. In light of being offered a free host with an upgrade of software, no ads, etc, and for peace of mind I think its worth it.

cot.com is not available as a domain name, already taken. cotrpg.com is though, I believe.

I have a question which is probably silly, but I am a fool when it comes to anything related to computers (HOW DO I DO KEYBOARD) So um, from what I've gathered, we wouldn't have to create new accounts and start everything all over again, would we? And the posts we've already made would not disappear, no? I don't mind losing my avatar (I've been meaning to change it anyway), but losing posts would be a rather sad thing. :<

But if anyone is worried then backing up your topics, posts and profiles is not a bad idea. HOWEVER this IF board is staying, so unless IF deletes it it will remain on the ether of the internet for all time and always accessible to members. :)
