NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) – It's shake-up time for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

Sources from the "L&O" galaxy say that stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe and Eric Bogosian are expected to be phased out at various points during the series' upcoming ninth season.

Julianne Nicholson already has departed because she is having a baby. Executive producer Dick Wolf is turning to Jeff Goldblum, who joined the cast last season, to remain as lead detective in the series, along with Saffron Burrows, who was recently cast to replace Nicholson as Goldblum's partner.

It's a big change for a show that has weathered a lot of casting shifts since it began in 2001. D'Onofrio and Erbe have been there since the beginning, and Bogosian joined in 2006. Since then, the original pair have had to make room for Nicholson and Chris Noth, who left last year. Goldblum arrived in 2008.

D'Onofrio has been popular in his role. But "L&O:CI" is a USA Network show, after running on sister channel NBC. And USA, insiders point out, prefers lighter fare. Compared with D'Onofrio, Goldblum is more in the tradition of Tony Shalhoub's comic-dramatic "Monk."

Details about D'Onofrio, Erbe and Bogosian's exits are still unclear as the actors' deals are being worked out. It's possible that D'Onofrio will reprise his character in guest stints.

The network only recently renewed the series for a ninth season, slated to premiere in late spring with a two-part episode.

Well, I guess I got my answer to Jeff Goldblum coming back. I missed the last episode of CI so I didn't know what to expect.

Well I'm surprised in one way that D'onofrio is being axed but in another way I didn't like the direction his character had changed since he first started on the show. Yes, going just to the USA channel hurt him and Erbe for sure. They were very different for the over 60 age group to follow (boy am I going to get beaten up for this remark). At times I went a little crazy with the fact that someone like D'onofrio's character could exist in a squad room but that was the fun of the show.

I love to watch the USA channel and TNT but I hope they don't use other shows as their hospice before their demise. Not fair to the followers.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" star Vincent D'Onofrio will leave the series at the beginning of the show's upcoming ninth season, USA Network said.

D'Onofrio has been on "CI" since the show's beginning as a series on NBC, portraying the idiosyncratic Detective Robert Goren. His departure is part of a major casting overhaul on "CI" next season. Fellow regulars Kathryn Erbe, Eric Bogosian and Julianne Nicholson are also leaving. New mom Nicholson is being replaced by Saffron Burrows.

According to "Law & Order" creator/executive producer Dick Wolf, D'Onofrio will appear in a two-part opener of season nine that will serve as his hand-off to Jeff Goldblum.

D'Onofrio left the door open to returning on the show for guest-starring stints. "For all my loyal 'CI' fans, I wouldn't be surprised if Goren pops up from time to time," he said.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has joined USA Network's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," completing the casting transformation on the police drama for its upcoming ninth season.

She will play the new captain taking over the Major Case Squad on the series. Her character, who comes from a working-class background, succeeds Capt. Danny Ross (Eric Bogosian), who headed the division for the past three years, following the departure of Capt. James Deakins (original cast member Jamey Sheridan).

Mastrantonio is one of two new faces on "L&O: CI" for next season, joining Saffron Burrows. The hires follow the exit of four regulars on the show: original stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe as well as Bogosian and new mom Julianne Nicholson, who is being replaced by Burrows.

With the departure of D'Onofrio, the cop drama is taking on a lighter tone. It centers on Jeff Goldblum, whose character Zach Nichols becomes the squad's top detective.

Mastrantonio is not a stranger to police procedurals; she had a recurring role on CBS' "Without a Trace."

Mich, welcome back! Thanks for the article and I'm looking forward to seeing how CI works out with the new casting. Maybe a lot of the actors/actresses from Without A Trace will show up on L&O's. I miss WAT badly.

Please stuff this site with more info on SVU and Chris. You are a New Yorker and can find more stuff that all of us combined.
