Title: Queer As Folk Talk

Jannine - August 1, 2005 04:16 AM (GMT)
I know there are at least 2 of us that watch QAF and I would welcome any chat on this subject; it is close to my heart.

I fell in love with Chris Potter thru season 1 of QAF and then lo and behold I discovered he had shared personal space with our other gorgeous Chris in an ep of SVU (Head, season 5) and of course CM also shared personal space with Mr Gale Harold also.... so I guess it ties it all together!

Did someone mention being tied up with Gale, Chris and CM..... :o

Hi from the other one of the two! *waves*

Ooh, it's kind of like "Six Degrees to Various Really Hot Guys"! :)

Well, you just did, but it sounds pretty good to me! But for the record, I'd prefer Gale, Robert Gant, and our Chris. Yummy! :D

Abyssinia,
Barrie, who thinks that it's pretty pathetic that her first post on the new board has very little to do with Chris!

Jannine - August 1, 2005 06:06 AM (GMT)
Barrie, I thought I was pretty bad too... hope Linny doesn't mind... but I think I waited for at least my 4th post! LOL

But at least its in the Off Topic Area so we can't get into trouble!

Just quietly, I think Robert Gant is pretty hot too - good bod - but I really liked Chris Potter's character even though he was somewhat smug and a control freak! I especially liked the way he dealt with petulant Brian in the beginning!

Me toooooo! *jumps erratically*

I used to be so much more obsessed with QAF. And you know, since they filmed in Toronto, and I live in Toronto, you'd think that I would have been a good source for spoilers, but I NEVER managed to run into them. Which was strange, cause I was almost a regular fruit fly at Woody's... Oh wait, once I managed to find their trailers and got Scott to sign my bag. After a friend of mine got into an argument with one of the crew members since they were on her front lawn when she was in res...

And I vaguely remember telling a story about almost getting into a car accident with Gale Harold on the old forum. Could you imagine, "umm, excuse me, could I get your insurance info? Pretty please?" *bats eyes*

Still not as good as Chris though... ;)

Jannine - August 3, 2005 06:13 AM (GMT)
So Itch ( ) - it was actually you that blind-sided Brian's jeep in Series 1 and not Justin's dad afterall!!!! Heehhehe

I think Series 1 is still my favourite. I'm watching Series 2 at the moment and it lacks a bit of punch (and I miss Dr David); Series 3 drove me crazy with Ben and his steroids and stuff and Series 4 was very good... and so far I have seen all bar the last 3 eps of Season 5 (waiting patiently.... ;) ) and so far it is brilliant. I cried so much when the bomb went off at Babylon.... don't know the outcome yet; so no spoiling please!!!!

All in all, I love QAF. I just adore the characters, the intimacy of it all, the quirkiness of it and just the passion with which the actors took on the roles. Won't ever be another show quite like it.

linnyb - August 3, 2005 03:43 PM (GMT)
You guys make me wish I had showtime. In the meantime though, I thought I would point you in the direction of serialkeller (aka Trasker)'s short but supremely funnyQAF--WTF? (A Photo Essay) which is hilarious even when you have no idea who the characters are.

I'm sure there are spoilers for...something in there. Episode 5.11? Since I am deprived and showtimeless, I really have no idea though.

Brian - August 3, 2005 09:34 PM (GMT)
Ya know what? When you don't have to moderate you can steal a few minutes to post.

The Canucks (and others, perhaps) among us will remember Chris Potter from Kung Fu: The Legend Continues. And one particularly nice underwear episode.

And speaking of underwear (or no underwear) - Matt Battaglia (has a web site but the URL isn't resolving at the moment). My, those years of playing football paid off. But, seriously, his type is not all that uncommon in the gay community. Glad to see they decided to go down that road a bit.

Brian, hello!!!!!!!!!

I had never seen Chris Potter before seeing Series 1 of QAF and although a lot of people didn't like his character - I absolutely fell in love with the guy and with Dr David! I had hopes of him returning and breaking Michael and Ben up! It wasn't to be though...

I have seen pics of Chris in Kung Fu and other things, but we never got the shows here, to my knowledge.

You just answered a question for me though; I wondered whether Matt Battaglia was a "real" football player - he certainly is built like one - and my God, when he disrobed for the underwear campaign.... well, let's just say I got very excited. Hahum.... Lucky Emmett! :D

Brian, do women like Debbie really exist! I want to be her!!!!

Linny, that photo story held somewhat of a spoiler for me, but a welcome one. I for one will be glad to see Brian actually do something worthwhile for Justin after 5 years of nothingness.... unlike the gals in the picture book!

I think they're missing the point that because of the bomb and because of people almost dying, that it obviously made Brian sit and take stock of his shitty/slutty lifestyle and so he finally grew up in a sense, and that was the only way for the writers to take Brian in the closing moments of QAF. I can't wait to see the proposal now!

Thanx for sharing.

:D

Jannine - August 5, 2005 12:19 PM (GMT)
awwwww. I've just been rewatching season 1 - and I just sat thru the Prom dance moment.... how ridiculously romantic was that... (to use Brian's words) - but it was so beautiful.

I will have pleasant dreams now! I didn't allow myself to watch the scene that followed... otherwise I'd be having bad dreams. :(

MASHFanficChick - August 5, 2005 01:24 PM (GMT)
I was in Urban Outfitters the other day (this really is on topic!)--it's a kind of funky/trendy clothes/furnishings/s**t kind of place, a chain--and they had a book of Gay Haiku. Which, naturally, I picked up. It was very funny, and I'll probably buy it eventually, but my favorite (ok, sec ond favorite) was as follows:

Queer As Folk is trash;
Badly written and acted.
I watch every week.

So absolutely f**king true! I admit it. And as for the Brian/Justin thing...on the one hand, I love it: a) it's sweet, and B) I like watching rattled!Brian. It gives him another dimension. On the other hand, I hate it: a) it's too easy, unless there's a big curveball in the last episode (which seems likely, going by the previews), and B) I don't care how much Brian loves Justin. Doing something he's fought against all his life is *not* the way to marital bliss!

And for the record: I WANNA BE DEBBIE!!! I mean, I'm already just about as blunt (though not giving linny a run for her money *grins at linny, whom she admires SO much*), but people don't like me as much. And I wanna be surrounded by beautiful, completely unatainable men, as well! :)

Abyssinia,
Barrie

Jannine - August 5, 2005 02:00 PM (GMT)
See Barrie, I don't see this as something Brian would NEVER do at all.

Through all 5 seasons Brian has acted out of character in one way or another. I think his whole life has been building up to this moment somehow.

He's always stepping in to save the day and asks no thanks in return. He has on several occasions done things for both Emm and Teddy that would be totally out of character for Brian; he has forgiven Michael for things he would never forgive anyone else for.

I think Brian learned from the fiasco that was Dr Dave - he seemed to give Ben more of a chance (I suppose it helps that he slept with Ben though... LOL) Making Mikey hate him just so Mikey would choose David over him; it was all for his own good.

I love the relationship between Brian and Debbie - all that resentment but underlying unconditional love that Brian shows no one!

When Brian lost Justin to that fiddler, his life was in ruins (as much as it can be for Brian)

Things started changing for Brian when Brandon came on the scene.

What really nailed it was the bomb and the thought that Brian might actually lose Justin and/or Michael. As Oprah says, "a lightbulb" moment - Brian had his and it made him grow up quick smart and reach out with both hands. I think he has wanted marital bliss his whole adult life (just never thought he could have it) - and now he wants it so badly he can taste it.

I can't wait to see the last 3 eps to see how all of this pans out - but I'm holding out for a happy ending for Brian and Justin (only, can Brian give Michael a quick f... on the eve of his wedding to Justin - just to settle old times once and for all) and can Dr Dave just make an appearance just so I can Chris Potter again.

God, I hope not :)

Debbie is a fag hag taken to the extreme and she becomes a neatly drawn parody. BTW, I'm not putting down fag hags. although the term has become less PC, the ladies are still dear to my heart.

And on Matt Battaglia (hmmm, the mind boggles). His site is now back up with some updates (he's engaged!) and some new photos. Although I wish these guys would spend a bit of money or find an adoring, capable fan [glancing around, whistling under his breath because he could do it in an hour] and get a decent design. Guess I should be careful; you never know who did it for him.

Evelina69 - August 6, 2005 03:35 AM (GMT)
Okay.. now my two favorite shows are in one board... *EV doing serious happy dance.. luckily no one here can see me...*

QAF is my all time favorite show.. yeah yeah.. its badly written, its unrealistic, it doesn't live up to one expectation of another .. blah blah blah.. but I LOVE it. LOVE IT LOVE IT

I've had the pleasure of meeting all of cast a couple of times and let me just say they are an awesome.

In the states, this coming Sunday will be QAF Series Finale... the end of an era.

Jannine - August 6, 2005 03:57 AM (GMT)
'bout time you bloody got here woman!!!! :D

What did everyone think of Brandon? I don't think Brian had much to worry about; Brandon was too pretty - with not much substance! I didn't like Ethan much either; I much prefer Justin with Brian.

Has anyone seen the blooper reel on the DVD set of season 1? It cracks me up.

Brian "you try spending some time with...... talking about cigars and smoking pussy....." Peter Paige and Scott Lowell go into a skit about smoking pussy after that - hilarious stuff!

Evelina69 - August 7, 2005 02:08 AM (GMT)
Sorry Jannine... I have neglectfully not posted here until now. I would hope that if you haven't received that last DVD that I sent you by now, you will very shortly.

Let me just say, I would have happily killed off Ethan the fiddle player way before his natural departure from the show. I thought he was a fake piece of crap from the moment he fiddled his way into Justin's life.

The bloopers from QAF are hysterical. There are some really good ones on other seasons DVD's but I do think the ones on the 1st seasons DVD set are the best.

I'm sure it will come this week - I'm hanging baby!

hehehe - "fiddled his way into Justin's life"

I love Peter Paige's take-off of Barbra Streisand that came out more like a coked up Cher! The look on Scott Lowell's face said it all. And Sharon Gless comes up with some beauties!

And it was nice to see the baby muck up on the blooper reel too; I was beginning to think the baby was perfect. :D

Is anyone feeling especially generous? If so, can you do me a favour?

I read somewhere there is a book on QAF and for the life of me I can't find it. I cannot get access to queer.SHO.com because it doesn't allow access to people outside the US - which is very annoying. (Actually I think saw pics of some of the cast singing copies of the book at some place or other...)

A lot of the US stuff regarding QAF is off limits to us folk outside the US. Bummer.

If someone could look up the site for me and just let me know if there is such a book, how much it is, publisher perhaps... I'd be really grateful.

Thanks in advance.

I actually thought to look on Amazon's site to see if the book was available, and it is! YAY

I have ordered it.

I'll let you know if it was worth it!

Jannine - August 29, 2005 12:14 AM (GMT)
I just rewatched Season 2 of QAF this past weekend (hubby was away.... LOL) and I just had to bring up some points.

Firstly, when Ben gives Michael that book with the inscription, and the kiss that follows. THUD - just fall to the floor. Too beautiful.

Um, isn't Brian always preaching about safe sex and won't allow Justin to have him bare back? There is a scene with Brian doing some young twink and, for want of a better expression, "shoots his load" over the guy - pretty impossible with a condom I'd say.

And why was Brian so hellbent on Michael not being with HIV+ Ben when in all actuality Brian had already slept with Ben at some White Party 2 years previously. Ben was already + then, so does this mean that Brian didn't care about it when he hooked up at the party? Did he even bother to ask about his status - did Ben not offer up his status?

I dunno.

Oh, some of my favourite scenes were between Deb and Mikey concerning Det. Horvath and how that whole thing played out - with the slap and with Deb finally coming around to Ben... powerful stuff.

Keeping in mind that I've only seen part of S2 of QAF, to me, this seems perfectly in character for Brian in one specific way. Look at what you're saying: He won't allow *Justin* to have him bareback. He hates the idea of *Michael* being with Ben. In both of these cases, the person at risk (or one of the people at risk, anyway) is someone he cares about. Brian's never given much of a damn about his own well-being (have you seen the ep with his birthday party yet?), but he--in his own fake-laissez faire way--can be amazingly protective, sometimes to a fault, of people he loves (which, honestly, at least toawrds the beginning of the series consists mostly of Michael and Justin). So to me, it makes perfect sense that he would be freaking out (in his own quiet Brian-freak-out way) about Justin and Michael's safety, while putting himself directly in the way of exactly the same danger he's trying to protect them from.

Abyssinia,
Barrie

Brian - August 29, 2005 01:17 AM (GMT)
Or

Use a condom and pull it off just before. It's fairly common. Can't remember the exact scene but given QAF's emphasis on safer sex, it would seem more likely.

Also as far as asking Ben. Hmm, a White Party. Lotsa drugs & booze generally mean very little truth. The smart guy doesn't bother asking, he justs uses a condom anyway. If the condom breaks, then you damn well better ask.

Yes and no. While QAF does usually emphasize safer sex, I would say that Brian is generally the exception. We often see him giving and getting various sexual favors, either without a condom (assuming the guy who just opened his pants for Brian to suck him wasn't wearing a condom while his pants were on), or presumably without one (that is, with no mention or visual of one, like when Brian picks up a guy, and then we see them in another room having sex). Like I said, though, I'm really not an expert, having continued with QAF my talent of getting into shows right before--or after!--they end, only watching S5 and S6 with absolute fanaticism.

Jannine - August 29, 2005 01:37 AM (GMT)
Barrie, you are right in what you say - what it boils down to is that Brian has 2 sets of rules, one for him and one for everyone else on the planet! :D

I love his "love" for Justin and Michael and its what makes an otherwise despisable character very loveable - his "fuck all" attitude is what makes him Brian and love him or hate him, he does put others first - in his own "quiet" way as you said.

Brian... I think the scene is one of Justin's supposed look-a-likes that Brian takes after the break up and the guy says "you shot buckets" and Brian is just "yeah, whatever!" - and I know you're probably right but the shooting of the scene (without being able to be too graphic) doesn't allow for the scenario of taking off the condom and it just lead me to believe that he wasn't wearing one, which is not in-keeping with Brian's philosophy at all.

Oh, the birthday party ep - do you mean the silk scarf escapade? Meh, he wants to die young and be another beautiful corpse like James Dean... that is in-keeping with Brian's "Forever Young" attitude. I actually love watching the blooper of that scene, when they fall and Gale Harold's pants are not pulled down and they have to do it again! As a person who was suicidal at a young age, I can almost come to grips with Brian's philosophy to a point - but I moved on from that phase. :)

I just adore these characters so much, I just need to come here and vent and talk about them! I'm glad you guys keep dropping by. I really adored Dr Dave and I didn't think I could like Ben but I put Dr Dave away for a few weeks and now I have let Ben in to my psyche - I am loving him!

Brian, do you know when Robert Gant "came out" exactly, cos I was reading old transcripts last night from an interview he did with Larry King with the rest of the cast early on and Larry kept referring to him as one of the "straight" cast members, stating only Peter Paige and Randy Harrison as the only "gay" cast members.

Most guys consider oral without a condom as safer sex. The risk of transmission is much lower (still there, of course) so it's usually given a pass. Besides have you ever tasted a condom for any length of time :(

Thanx Master B. Mr Gant is certainly a beautiful man, both inside and out. He has such a way about him - truly gorgeous.

ATTN: There be minor SPOILERS towards the end of this post. Sorry, but QAF is, to a large extent, a soap opera, and it's hard to talk about soaps without spoiling *something*.

QUOTE
Barrie, you are right in what you say - what it boils down to is that Brian has 2 sets of rules, one for him and one for everyone else on the planet!  :D

Actually, I think it's more like three sets of rules: one set for him, one set for the people he loves, and one set for the rest of the world, which he doesn't give a flying f**k about. There are things that he can do because he's Brian Kinney, but that he would kill Michael and Justin for (because they're dangerous in some way) and would kill the rest of the world for (not because he cares about their welfare, but because only Brian is allowed to feel/think/do whatever it is).

QUOTE
I love his "love" for Justin and Michael and its what makes an otherwise despisable character very loveable - his "fuck all" attitude is what makes him Brian and love him or hate him, he does put others first - in his own "quiet" way as you said.

I agree. I also think that part of his saving grace is the fact that at least part of Brian Kinney is an act. He can spend 99% of his time giving off the "I couldn't care less" act, and maybe 75% of the time, it's for real. But the fact that he loves, and hurts, and feels, the fact that in some ways he's the most sensitive out of all of them, the fact that as much as he may purport to dislike Debbie, and vice versa, they really care about each other, that's what makes me want to give him a second look. (The fact that he's gorgeous, of course, is what makes me want to give him a third, fourth, and fifth look!)

QUOTE
Oh, the birthday party ep - do you mean the silk scarf escapade? Meh, he wants to die young and be another beautiful corpse like James Dean... that is in-keeping with Brian's "Forever Young" attitude.

Yeah, I meant the scarf escapade. Do I think he was really trying to kill himself? No. Do I think he honestly didn't care if he lives or died? Yep. And in a way, that's scarier. Wanting to die is a concrete decision; being apathetic about it, risking it for a thrill while having no real desire to do it (despite his "James Dean" attitude), is to live life as a crapshoot...and is classic Brian. No one else on that show ever would have tried it; if one of them had been suicidal, they would have made a hell of a better effort, and if Justin ever wanted to try it for the supposed benefits, Brian would have killed him before he had to worry about asphyxia.

And for the record, James Dean may have wished to "live fast, die young, and leave a good looking corpse" but while he managed the live fast and die young parts, and while the specific details of his death are uncertain, it's pretty unlikely that he succeeded in leaving a good looking corpse.

Abyssinia,
Barrie, who will be comemmorating the 50th anniversay of James Dean's death in a little over a month

Jannine - August 29, 2005 08:26 AM (GMT)
Barrie, I think one of the best written subplots in QAF is the relationship between Debbie and Brian.

Brian would have killed to have Deb as his mum instead of the frigid bitch that he's got... and despite Deb's belief that Brian would only ever hurt her Mikey, she also knew he'd die for him if he had too - making him a pretty special guy.

When Deb slaps Brian after Vic died and when Brian told Deb about his cancer, they are 2 fantastic moments I'll never forget.

* I still wanna be Deb * :D

Ok, I need help again! :D

I'm trying to hunt down a CD that Chris Potter brought out a few years back called Tourmaline. I listened to snippets of it yesterday and I have to say, I really liked it; the guy has a sexy voice and is a great songwriter!

I tried to track it but got nowhere. It apparently got released through Magrecords! With Chris being Canadian, I'm not sure if Magrecords is Canadian or American... that's where you guys come in. Has anyone heard of Magrecords? Do they still exist?

Any info would be appreciated. I really want to purchase this CD. :D

As you may have noticed, I'm still missing Dr Dave.....

itchyloon - September 1, 2005 09:54 PM (GMT)
Jannine, I decided to do some research... I've never heard of Mag Records... ever. But apparently they're based in the US.

If you go to their website, you'll find Chris Potter's CD listed with song samples. There's also an order form that might let you purchase it. They say there's no minimum order, and they don't actually say how far they're willing to ship for $2.95 USD. They've got a contact page that might help you out a bit more...

Hope that helps!!! :)

Jannine - September 2, 2005 12:02 AM (GMT)
Hi Itchy :D

Thank you so much for your help! I did visit the site and I actually got to the Order Form but it won't allow me to complete the transaction (probably because I'm out of the US)...

It doesn't appear to be a HUGE company so maybe they have limited resources for such things. I dunno.

Anyway, I contact them via email and I will await a response! I know the CD was made quite some time ago, so perhaps it isn't even available any longer but after listening to snippets, I really got into it and I would love a copy!

I'll let you know how it all pans out.

Thanx again Itchy. :D

[and I'll hear no wise cracks about the CD still being available, cos no one bought it!] <_<

I can't believe the ride is over.

I got to see the last 3 episodes of QAF the other day (thanx Ev.) :)

WOW

I could have done without some of the storylines but others, WOW. Like Zen Ben losing it - the series could have just ended there for me; Robert Gant was so amazing, so powerful in those scenes.... who would have thought good ol' Ben had it in him!

I'm glad not everything was wrapped up with a nice pretty bow - we all know life isn't that great, but I'm glad it ended so well. There wasn't much more they could have done.... except maybe have David waltz back in (for purely my own amusement) and just to create a stir of some kind... a la Blake walking back into Ted's life. Oh, and Tad - ewwww - scary bugger!

In cyberland I just know Drewzy is coming back for Emm, so I won't worry about him. :D

I'm gonna miss those guys.... thank God for DVDs and reruns.

Has anyone here who cares NOT seen the final episode? Cause now that Jannine has, I wanna talk about it here. I'll give it a few days, and then assume that everyone's seen it, ok?

Barrie

Oh come on Barrie, dish! There aren't that many here who watch it; I know Ev has seen the last ep and I'm pretty sure Brian would have....

I wanna talk about it too!

We will just put up RED ALERT SPOILER Headings at the beginning of the posts....

I wanna know what you have to say.
